  1. Oh my, I just love all the replies. ALL OF THEM!

Better yet, my VERY VERY VERY first cruise was on Carnival in May 1981. We left from Ft Lauderdale. I have no idea the name of the ship. I do however remember it having a ton of high school kids on for their senior trip. I was with 2 other girl friends. We had just finished a year of work after graduating college. We didn't want to be around high school boys. Also, you could not use a blow dryer in your stateroom. There were central "hair styling" rooms where you could get the electric you needed for your curling iron and blow dryer. This was not a lot of fun. I remember 2 ports - St. Croix and Pueto Rico. No tv's in your room or basically anywhere. If you wanted news on a sea day, there was a legal size piece of paper at the Purser's desk with world news. And we had a great time!!!

In 1981 Carnival only had three ships, so that narrows it down to Mardi Gras, Carnivale and Festivale. This link helps, but is not definitive because it doesn't pick up until October 1981: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CB4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F1981%2F10%2F18%2Ftravel%2Fcruises-for-1981-82.html&ei=w-oMVbijPMvDggShzYOwCA&usg=AFQjCNEarUPh9bw-jr3ACrmjZYrrLIugkw&bvm=bv.89060397,bs.1,d.eXY

But looking at the itineraries (hard to read I know) for Fall 1981-Summer 1982 all three called on San Juan but Carnivale and Festivale included St Thomas while Mardi Gras included St Croix, so that's my guess.

Mardi Gras was our first cruise also (in 1989). We have great memories of that ship and that era of cruising.

  2. What does "go to work" mean? If they want to ask me what each of my pills are and what they are for or who my doctor is I'd be happy to tell them. I don't mind answering questions. Have you really seen people taken away in handcuffs for having their meds in a pill dispenser?

  3. I always use the daily pill dispensers for convenience and to save space and have never had a problem, whether cruising, driving or flying. I frankly haven't given a lot of thought as to whether that's appropriate or not.

Can somebody tell me what the potential consequences would be? Obviously, the doctor and the pharmacy both would have records that would show my pills were legally prescribed if it ever got as far as having to establish that before a judge. My question is why on earth it would ever get that far? We're not talking about potential trafficking quantities (although at the start of a 2 week trip I'll admit it would be an impressive pile!) I guess I'm just getting more cranky as I get older, but I really don't understand why anyone who saw my dispenser in my luggage or in my cabin would try to make me prove I had a prescription for whatever was in there. How would they even know they weren't over-the-counter meds?

So I guess I'm just trying to imagine the encounter. How would that go? "Sir, I see you have some pills in here, let me see your labels - don't have them? Then have a seat in that cell over there until your arraignment hearing and we have the time to crush and analyze them to see what they are" It just seems over the top to me, and not a likely scenario. Besides, even if I had some labels who's to say they match up to the pills in the dispenser? It all seems just too petty to be a real concern to me.

  4. While some of the new ports are intriguing to me (Trinidad/Tobago, Bonaire, Grenada) most of the ports are the same ones I have been to many times already. As others have said - it is very hard to get 10-11 days off - and add on a day pre-cruise to fly in! I guess I'll have to wait one more year till I retire, and then can take advantage of some of these itineraries. As far as one-way airfare goes - for the past few years we have actually found better prices mixing and matching two one-ways over one round-trip airfare.:)

Yeah, I don't quite understand that objection either. When I saw someone from Toronto say that this morning about San Juan I did a Kayak search for Toronto-Miami round trip and Toronto-Miami, San Juan-Toronto multi-city. The multi-city itinerary was $50 cheaper. I'd have to think other city pairs would be similar.

  5. I'm in an SJ in November also what is wrong with the windows?

Some of the cabins have one or more windows where the seal between the double panes has allowed moisture inside resulting in discoloration between the panes. This cannot be cleaned either from the inside or the outside, the windows need to be replaced.

Here is one thread that discusses the issue and has information about some of the cabin numbers affected. There is a picture in post #23 of that thread that shows what they are talking about.

  6. The UDP does not show up as a choice, but when I booked a suite this morning, all four show up in my amenities. The pp grats for 2, UBP, OBC and UDP. So, the grats did not replace the UDP. If you are booked in a suite and still outside final payment, if your price doesn't rise too much, it would be worth it to rebook with new promo, just adds the pp grats for 2.

But don't forget that if you booked prior to February, non-haven suites got $300 OBC and if you re-book now you will lose $100 of that. Also gratuities for persons 3-8 are now $14.95/day instead of $12 if you pre-paid then. Probably still a small net gain in most cases, but smaller than it first might appear.

  7. I'm having a real hard time not booking a Suite under this promotion. I'm a Carnival fan but a suite for 4 for $3400? 3

Come on over to the dark side:D

And not a Carnival suite, an NCL suite. Trust me, having done both there is no comparison whatsoever. You will believe you've been inducted into royalty. AND, with UBP for the first 2, soda package for the others & UDP for all it would be a cruise you'll be talking about for a very long time.

  8. You picked a good ship to do a longer cruise on. We were on the Breeze for a Med cruise b2b with her transatlantic crossing, 27 days in all. I could have stayed on longer, so no, 12 days still won't seem "long enough".

You can pace yourself more than on a 7 day, so no need to be exhausted at the end. You can afford to skip some things, knowing that they will come back around.

Menu variety was fine, no worries there. We did get burned out on the entertainment, and fun times activities were pretty repetitive. So just relaxing, reading, exploring the ship, wasting time in the casino, and catching a nap became a bigger part of the day than normal.

Passenger mix will likely tend to be a little older because those are the folks who have the time to do one of these. And there will likely be a higher than normal number of Platinum and Diamond cruisers. Probably still just 2 elegant nights so no, no more lobster. These repositioning cruises are pretty popular, so I wouldn't count on prices going lower.

We have done several 10 day and up cruises and now consider a 10 - 15 day cruise our "norm". Hardly seems worth it to go for 7 days or less anymore, although we have booked a 6 day Vista cruise in 2017 to accompany our son's family because that's what they wanted to book. But we have a 10-day, 13 day and 10 day scheduled before that one... to get our "fix" in.

  9. Did you reserve the Family Harbor Suite?

It's been my experience, that anytime you book a suite (and I think the Family Harbor Cove Balconies SUITES are being treated as such) that there is not a restriction when you book. It's always allowed me to book 2 people in a 4/5 person suite but it's not been the same allowance when it's a inside/ov/balcony. I hope that makes sense and explains why you would be able to do so....

No, A Family Harbor Cove Balcony (there are 4 of them), not a suite. I finalized it today with my PVP and told her I was worried about being moved later because the reason we took it was to be close to our son's family in one of the Family Harbor Deluxe Oceanviews. We anticipate a fair amount of babysitting and we want access to the Family Harbor Lounge which is restricted to just people in those cabins. She checked with a supervisor and said there were no occupancy restrictions on those and not to worry (she thought they were being treated like suites because of the unique nature of that section of the ship), but she would double check with a manager Monday.

  10. Well, I was able to get through the booking process just now and booked two of us on Vista in a Family Harbor Cove balcony that sleeps four. Actually, I didn't know it was a quad at the time I booked it. I was just trying to find a cabin next to my son's family and they are in one of the Family Harbor Deluxe Oceanviews. I only have it on 24 hr hold, so maybe it will kick out when I try to pay the deposit, but I did get that far.

  11. I'm guessing she meant 6476 not 6467. That's also an aft extended balcony and does have a sofa and coffee table, unlike 7461 which does not. I don't think 7461 is an upgrade (both are 8M's), and I wouldn't like the switch either.

Maybe the PCC confused 76 and 67 too, telling them they were booked in an aft balcony but actually reserving the inside. That would explain the "fix" he/she made, and why it was called an upgrade.

In any case, I agree that the only hope is for the OP to get as high in the hierarchy as she can and plead her case politely.

  12. Didn't work for me...I am only seeing through Oct 2016. Where at under manage my cruise did you type the info in?

You have to log in and go to Manage my Booking. If you don't already have a cruise booked you will see a form asking for booking # and other info. Leave all of that blank and just use the drop-down menu to select the ship. Select Vista. Then use the drop down menu to select date. You will see a list of dates out through April 2017. If you do have a current cruise booked, click the tab to add a booking and follow those same steps.

  13. Under the Freestyle Choice promotion one of the choices is free beverage program for the first two passengers in a cabin, with the soda package for passengers 3-8.

If you buy the program, all over 21 in the cabin must buy it. Is that requirement waived for (over 21) passengers beyond the first two when it is free under the promotion, or are those additional passengers required to take it, and pay for it?

  14. We have sailed Carnival multiple times, including Europe. One of our Med cruises was on the Breeze. We encountered terrible weather so that put a damper on it, but we enjoyed the ship. We've always been happy with service and food on Carnival, and Breeze certainly didn't disappoint us.

Since you say you didn't like that ship I think you will be unimpressed with Vista also. They are basically the same ship, although Vista is a tad larger. It has some interesting looking new cabin classes (Havana Cabanas on deck 5 and Family Harbor cabins on deck 2), and a few club/restaurant options that Breeze doesn't have, but they will be a very similar experience.

It's a shame Breeze wasn't to your liking. But you should go where you're comfortable. Lots of choices out there.

  15. It does look like decking in the lido buffet area, which is different than the way is is pictured on the Breeze deck plans. I remember complaints about the Breeze Marketplace flooring being prone to being slippery, so maybe. But it seems like decking would be hard to keep sanitary, so I'm skeptical until further confirmation comes along.

That area outside the Marketplace Cafe around Guy's and Iguana Cantina are definitely covered though.
