Given that there seems to be considerable evidence that wearing masks reduces the risk for the wearer and others, we will wear masks on cruises. It was not long ago that we all saw on the news the conditions on a number of cruise ships caught in the early days of COVID. I am not a gambling type of person so will do what is practical and evidence based to reduce risk. I hope that others will do the same. It is disheartening to read that some people still dismiss the benefits of mask wearing.

Remember the ones who did not do well in science?🤪

I hope so. I feel taken advantage of now. At 3:30 having extensive convo with supervisor. Totally discussing the CLIA news that came earlier in the day at great length.  Yet he said the cruise was still on. If someone puts doubt in your head, unless you are a gambler, you go with the sure thing. I couldn’t risk 50% fee.

    GOOD NEWS!!!

Through our travel agent's efforts, today we received a refund from Disney Cruise Line of our 20% cancellation penalty.

I hope DCL does the right thing for you Blindbat78.

Well I cancelled yesterday at 3:30 pm. For fear that the 50% would apply. I read off the CLIA announcement and quoted what was said and the agent said that would be voluntary on the part of cruiselines. 3 hrs later I get an email that the cruise is cancelled. That announcement from the CLIA came early in the day and Disney didn’t put the cancel order out till 7 pm. I feel like they intentionally waited so they could charge the 20%. I don’t believe that Disney people had no idea that something was coming to cancel that cruise. Yet they still took the 20%

Since you got the email I think there is a good chance you will get your 20% back.  I am hoping my travel agent can wield some clout with Disney to get our 20% back.

Well DCL has canceled Fantasy cruises through Sep 15.  The problem you've got is the refunds/future cruise credit thing only applies to those people who've paid in full for their cruises.  Anyone cancelling a cruise, before being paid in full, fall under the cancellation policy they agreed to when booking the cruise.

Well, now we will have to see how Disney treats those of us who cancelled because of the Caronavirus before they did, with respect to our forfeited 20%.

I’m confused. If Fantasy is provisionally green it will sail Aug 15th. I have to cancel by Friday or jumps to 50%. I’m so hoping they will cancel the cruise. Then will get money back.

What this color rating system is, is a rating as to how prepared any given ship is to sail again.  A provisional Green, I think. means that they have not found anything wrong as of yesterday,  but are still evaluating the ship and its plan to handle any outbreaks on the ship when and if it sails.

  6. I cancelled our four suites on June 12th for our August 8th Fantasy sailing and took the 20% hit.  It was just to risky to go into the 50% penalty period and hope that Disney will cancel.  No one in our family of twelve wants to go this August, so we had no choice. ☹️

I’m going to cancel tomorrow and I’m going to complain like I’ve been doing. Only hope might be that after I and you have cancelled that Disney will cancel cruise. Maybe we could get the 20% back. If the CDC extends again the no sail order Disney won’t be sailing. And ports are not open yet. Grand Caymen is closed till Sept. other are still closed or will only just be opening. I don’t appreciate that Disney is holding me hostage to the cruise on that date. It’s not safe to cruise at this time, simple as that. Not relaxing the cancellation fees based on that is despicable and shameful.

Nothing new as of today.  The Disney Fantasy has been given a provisional Green rating:

"When it comes to Disney Cruise Line, whose response plan is under review or revision, Disney Dream and Disney Wonder are provisionally red, while Disney Fantasy is provisionally green.

My travel agent tells me that if Disney cancels this cruise because of the Caronavirus that they will go to bat for us to get our 20% deposit money back.

My family is booked on the Aug 15 cruise and was lead to believe I could cancel with no penalty. That would have been in Mid April. At that time no one knew the extent of the shut down. As you mentioned Disney is not being considerate with cancelling now. Why would anyone go on a cruise with a rampant virus still circulating? The numbers in many states are going up. I have a few more days to cancel before the charge is 50%. Was hoping they would have canceled by now. I just want to cancel and get full refund. Shame on Disney holding people to these fees at this terrible time!!

Yes, we cancelled last Friday the 12th and took the 20% hit.  Disney Fantasy and Dream are about the only two ships in the entire industry that still have departures in August.  Unless the CDC mandates, I don't think Disney will cancel because they  are not going to any foreign ports.  The Virgin Islands are begging to tourist to come back. All of the Alaska dates have been cancelled because Canada will not allow any ships into ports.

we are to sail on the Fantasy in August, so far we are going. However wearing a mask 100% of the time is a total deal breaker for me

We are also booked on an early August Fantasy cruise for 12 members of our family.  I would just as soon cancel at this point but Disney is not giving any consideration if we cancel now.  People on the cancelled cruises are offered 100% refund or 125% credit for a future booking.  Most other public events in our area have been cancelled for August.  I think Disney is pushing the envelope here, not so family friendly.

  10. What I want to know is: what service are you using to binge-watch the show?

Our first Princess sailing is coming up, and I've been wanting to see an episode or two just for nostalgia's sake.

You can watch Love Boat nearly 24 hours per day on any Princess cruise. There is one channel dedicated to the show broadcast in all state rooms.

I was on the Pacific Princess in October 2002 sailing from NY to Rome. It was billed as the "Final Love Boat Cruise". There was a cocktail party on deck in the NY harbor the day of sailing. Gavin MacLeod and some of the other cast member came to the party. It was filmed for Good Morning America and the Travel Channel. It was a memorable cruise.

  11. There are many valid points being made here on this thread. I have used one of the online T/A bidding sites and was happy with the cruise that I booked with the low T/A bidder. The price was competitive and the perk, which was a surprise when we arrived in our cabin, was a bottle of champagne and a plate of chocolate covered strawberries. I confirmed their status with the cruise line before making payment and everything worked great. Does anyone else have an experience with this type of booking that they would like to share?:)

  12. Our first cruise was with a Louis Rukeyser organized event on the Ryndam in the fall of 2000. Lou had many of his weekly guest on board for seminars and everyone was eagerly watching the counting of the chads as the Presidential election outcome had not been determined by Thanksgiving. This was our introduction to cruising and we have enjoyed each and every one since. We met up with her again in a 2006 Alaska cruise. Now we will say good bye in Singapore.

  13. This is the 5th "dress code" thread in the last few months.

It is getting a little tiresome.

The policy is what it is - dress however makes you comfortable and please leave the rest of us alone!@!

One of the purposes of this forum is to update travelers on new developments and exchange ideas. Some people may be new to CC and have not seen this announcement and after a few days they get buried in old messages. These are not required reading, so you can simply not look at a postings.

BTW I see the Buffalo Bills will be playing the Titans at Nissan Stadium on Sunday October 11th at 1pm. I will be on the Ryndam in Jordan on that date.

  14. On August 15, 2015 Holland America announced the following changes to the dress code:

Q: Did HAL change their dress code?

A: Yes, some refinements were made to improve consistency and the policy now reads:

    • Most evenings smart casual attire is appropriate. Shorts, pool/beachwear, distressed jeans and men’s tank tops are best left to the daytime and are not permitted in fine dining restaurants.

    • Gala Nights evoke the grand traditions of cruising as guests dress to impress for special events on board, including our five-course gourmet dinner in the Dining Room. For gentlemen, collared shirts and slacks are required in all fine dining restaurants.

Q: Why the change from “Formal” To “Gala” night?

A: To many, the “Formal” term was misleading as it implies a specific type of dress (black tie or tuxedo) that has never been a requirement. “Gala” still implies festive or dressy without misleading guests to bring attire the majority of guests don’t wear.

Q: What about ladies’ gala attire?

A: Dressy attire is appropriate. Dresses, skirts, and slacks are all acceptable.

Q: Are a jacket and tie required for men?

A: Jacket and tie is the preferred attire in all fine dining restaurants on Gala Nights, though it is not required. Guests without a jacket and tie were allowed in the fine dining restaurants before the new wording so this is not a policy change.

    Q: Are jeans allowed?

A: Jeans without holes, tears or embroidery are welcome on most evenings in all restaurants, but on Gala Nights jeans are only allowed in the casual dining restaurants.

Q: Can I wear shorts in the main dining room?

A: Not at dinner. The dining room is considered a fine dining restaurant and shorts are not permitted.

Q: Is the dress code the same on Grand Voyages?

A: Yes. The policy applies to all Holland America Line voyages.

    And this:

Gala Nights evoke the grand traditions of cruising as guests dress to impress for special events on board, including a five-course gourmet dinner in the Dining Room. For gentlemen, jacket and tie are appropriate, collared shirt and slacks are required in all restaurants except those on Lido Deck which

    permit jeans, shorts and T-shirts

  15. You might want to find out when the ship is being sold. Personally, I would not sail on a ship just before it is being sold and then refitted, as it is too tempting for the company to put off some repairs and maintenance.

As to the norovirus, I am confident that they will have this resolved by the time you sail. We were on the Maasdam in May and it took several sailings and deep cleanings, but they reportedly have solved this issue.

We just booked the Ryndam's final voyage Oct 3, 2015 - Venice to Singapore.

This will be our third cruise on the Ryndam. Our very first cruise was on the Ryndam with Louis Rukeyser of Wall Street Week. Great memories.

We were on the last voyage of the "Love Boat" - Pacific Princess in Oct 2002.

Gavin Macleod and some of the other cast members came on board for a sail away party. The cruise was fantastic. More great memories.
