  1. Strangely we are civilised over here , and using cards is pretty much the norm

As said before we use chip and pin but I have seen the swipe facilty on the machines , and in fact have had to use the swipe facility in Europe , cant remember if its still so tho

There will be very few places that only take cash , but there my be smaller places that put a spend minimum on the cards , normally around £5

  2. We are also doing a land tour , but its a diy one . We are flying to Fairbanks for a couple of nights driving down to Denali for 3 nights then anchorage for a night , and then having 2 nights in Vancouver .

The good thing about touring about is if you dont like one part , it doesnt matter because you arent there long

  3. We are planning a trip to Alaska this year and was curious if the problems last year were rectified such that it is almost guaranteed not to repeat this year? Anyone here know the extent of the repairs and if things are 100% operational again??

I am going in a group of 4 and we have discussed what happened last year .If by any freak chance it happened again , we said we would get off the boat and and make our way back to Vancouver , it would be an adventure !

  4. I have noticed that there isnt much mention of Millenium on the threads , and was curious why. I have been reading the reviews which seem to go from one extreme to another , all the more puzzling/ amusing when it applies to the same trip .

I have found some of the negatives to be entertaining especially one that seemed to be upset that South Asia isnt like the Carribean ?

I have decided just to read all the negatives them i am bound to be pleasantly surprised:D

Btw we are doing the Southbound Alaska in August

I have only done one cruise before , a Carribean one , really didnt like it , but it wasnt anything to do with the ship or the crew , just picked the wrong trip ( sea sickness ) . And I am determined to overcome it this time

  5. There is the Martini Bar:D......that is a lot of fun:) but they don't

make the same drinks as in The Molecular Bar.

I am slightly concerned that I'm going on a wonderful trip to Alaska and am worried about lack of cocktails :D

  6. Maybe? Travel among EU countries is more relaxed. I noticed when our flight from Amsterdam to Barcalona was cancelled, we stayed overnight in Amsterdam and did not need to show our passport when checking back in the next day. From VillaFrance to Monaco to Milano to Bern using a rail pass, no checking in/out at borders. But of course in those cases we had already purchased the tickets.

We have driven through EU countries and there is no stopping at borders to show passports, until you get to the ferry ports or trailen to get to UK

  7. I have always found that it is best to carry a copy. Many hotels in Europe keep your passports until you check out. If not keep it in a safe.

I have never had my passport kept In any European hotel until check out , I have experienced them holding it for a few hours / overnight, but that's not happened for a very long time

  8. Bah !! I am sailing on the Millenium , and seems wrongly assumed they had the molecular bar .

What and where are the cocktails on the Millenium please .........please dont say they dont do any

  9. After two different sets of nails by two techs since December, I soaked them off and am living with the hell of growing mine out. They are getting better and don't hurt anymore :(

I know that once I get the healthy nail grown out a bit more, and definitely for my August cruise, I'll manage to forget all this and I'll want a new set.

What I'm wondering is, honestly and realistically, what will happen if I refuse to let the tech grind my nails down first? Will the nails really fail to adhere and just fall off? As hard as it was to get them off, that's difficult to imagine.

I would find a new nail tech

I have acriylic tips and my nails are never ground down , the salon i go to are rather evengelical in preaching about going to salons who use electic files and 'cheap' dental acrylic which is very hard and needs electic files , and will probably end up causing serious damage

My nails are only lightly buffed with a file , I have new set every 4th infil ( because i have french tips) if i didnt want them replaced they would lightly file and buff the ridges out , and would want me to go back a few times to do this , and yes my nails do stay put !

I have known them to refuse to do work on nails they consider have been over filed

  10. Hand sanitisers can lull people into a false sense of security , they are not a substitue for soap and water. In fact research has shown santisers do not stop the spread of some viruses such as norovirus .

If people are using them alongside washing their hands as normal then thats ok , but some people will think that they just using the sanitisers is just as good or even better , and this is a big problem .

Of course keeping your hands clean stops you passng on any germs but of course doesnt keep you safe from other peoples !

  11. We did a Carribean cruise a few years ago , and loathed it . Hard to put my finger on why, probably a combination of too long at sea , too many people , the tail end of flu , and constant sea queasy....ness. So we said never again:rolleyes:

Next year we are doing a cruise as part of a trip to Alaska , so I am really really really going to try hard to enjoy it . There will be more time on land , more to see from the boat, and im going to be prepared with anti sea sick medications , plus we are going with other people which i hope will help. I think i would have preferred a smaller boat but I went with the flow , so to speak

I think cruising maybe a 'marmite' thing as we say here ( either love it or hate it ) but I think you maybe able to increase your odds in liking it buy doing research. I will never ever do a Carribean cruise again , but i see a few more 'adventurous ' trips that I like the look of .

I'm sure i would like it more if the boats didnt actually leave port:D

  12. Since I'm booked, paid, confirmed and have received my luggage tags for my cruise in 4 weeks I can look at the site with amusement.

My booking appears with the right cabin but the total cost is now stated as $700 on the front page. When I view my reservation the real amount I paid is accurate but the cost is listed as $7 more than what I paid and I now have an amount due of $7.

I decided not to purchase any excursion or addons to avoid having to call and only pay the amount of the add on.

I think the $7 price difference might be a difference in gratuities. As the quoted price for Select gratuities $168 is different than what they quoted in the fare $175. I have no explanation for the $700. LOL.

If $700 is the real price...I want a refund of more than $1800! hahaha!

I have the £700 showing too , .well every other time i sign in , which is really weird

Last night I was on the phone to my sister while we tried sychronising our bookings , mine was straightforward .....ish . She was having a breakdown, it kept defaulting to a booking for one , when she finally convinced it she wanted a guest it kept kicking her out . It must have taken her 30 minutes or more , for some reason she didnt find it funny:D
