  1. Quite safe to drink. You have to drink a fair bit to have any further feeling than a tingle or numb lips.

Ever seen it prepared? I would drink it more often in Fiji if the mixers used a nail brush and scrubbed their hands with good soap. As they give their hands a quick 'rinse' before preparing I decline.

My preferred method of preparation is the traditional Samoan way. The local village virgin girls chew the root (in their mouth) and spit the pounded material in the bowl, prior to mixing.

    Safe to drink = yes.

Prepared in a hygienic manner = don't even think about it.

  2. I just don't get it. RCI bans 4 way power boards and I have seen the pile on disembarkation. They also ban irons.

Has anyone here also tried to iron a shirt with the wife's hair straightener? It's not worth the hassle.

I agree, it's over the top to ban power boards for my 2x 1.5v AA batteries, my 6v phone, 14v laptop and 8v video camera. BUT if we had daughters I could see them all bringing along a curling iron, hair straightener and all of them preening, steaming and setting their hair at the same time.

I can see their logic as not everyone is aware of the risks of overloading on heavy demand devices.

  3. With the taxi kidnapping, I find that really hard to believe post 2006 as no one wants a trip to the QEB Suva.

The scammers are still there, but there is so much to do and see.

The was also a few KFC's in Suva (used to be a Kentuky Fried Chicken many years ago too) but they wouldn't reveal their secret ingredients to the health department and got the boot a few years ago.

Have a look at the museum, the gardens, trip to Pacific Harbour.

  4. Keep up similar posts bragging of "smuggling alcohol" and the taking of ANY forms of bottled liquid will soon be banned.

Once again a minority ruining it for the majority.

I don't agree 100% that it comes from bragging of smuggling booze. I don't think a lot of smuggling goes on. We bought in cans of diet coke etc, the boxes were ripped open and tapped backed up by the time it gt to the cabin. We also took on a water bottle (sealed, with water in it as I choose not to pay $4.00 for a .99 cent bottle of water) it was opened, seal broken when we got our bag back. We now take empty water bottles as fill them on the ship for taking off on islands.

  5. A bit like taking an old takeaway cup into Hungry Jacks. ;-)

Yeah, almost as bad as people taking their old souvenir cups and filling them with their own vodka, lemonade and other fruit juices and getting the ice from the steward.

I am sure they will stop soft drinks and water being taken on board soon enough.

  6. We just got off the Pearl this morning. If you bought the embarkaton package, they gave you a USB and would put other digital images on for $5 each.

    Also.......we took a power board.

Someone told me that, they said join the 'VIP Club' and they thought it was $5.00. I asked the photo staff and they said get the USB (by joining the Club) and it was $10.00 per digital image. I was not offered the embarkation deal (never heard of that package), I know someone who did join the club and it was $10 each for them.

Maybe they had to increase the photo sales to compensate for the lack of drink sales on NZ cruises.

  7. I never said it was the surge protector part that got it on. I just stated that was what it was.

Actually I found on my last cruise P&O has started to tun around a little. An example is if any photo was taken of you onboard you would need to pay for it, even for special occasions. Now (which was to my surprise) they give them to you for free if its special.

Our last cruise wad mid June. There was no giving away of anything. They wanted about 25 for a 4 USB stick and then 10 per digital image, or save it on my device for 20 per digital image.

I would have purchased all of our digital images if they were $5 each.

  8. Ask here, I'm sure the Pearl has UK plugs, other ships will have other plugs etc, so take an adaptor, plug that in = 1 power source + 1 AU / NZ plug = 2 outlets. iPads, laptops, batteries and phones even all put on a 6 way adaptor take less power than a 100 watt bulb. Maybe it's the hair straighteners that are increasing the loading??

Other lines do take them off. We saw a whole pile on a table to be collected at the end of a cruise.
