  1. Personally, I would love to spend embarkation day in the naughty room seeing what is abound in terms of items being smuggled (or not) aboard the ship, as it were.. I know that I would be amazed, to say least and speechless... LOL

Expressions on passenger faces would be priceless, too...

    bon voyage

Well, Bo...having been invited the "naughty room" I can tell you that there's one table that is loaded with irons of one kind or another and one with knives....I didn't see any rice cookers but we're going on a Thanksgiving cruise and I'm guessing DH should leave the turkey fryer at home....I know better than to use it in my room...but I thought it would be ok on the balcony.

Thanks to OP for the laugh of the day!!!!

  3. Did this cruise from Bayonne year before last in Sept.....one word and everyone has mentioned it: LAYERS!! It can be hot, warm, cold, rainy...kind of like Ireland......it's very laid back as far as style is concerned so I would bring jeans and 2 pairs of capris (1 if they're denim) with a mix of long and short sleeve shirts. Definitely bring a front zippered hoodie and a medium (velour type) vest that you can layer together if needed. I also recommend a hooded rain jacket....I have a pull over anorak that folds up into its own pouch that I bring everywhere because it weighs next to nothing and it's international orange so DH can spot me in a crowd! This was a fantastic trip...have fun....BTW if you have a sweet tooth be sure to try the frozen maple syrup on a stick! (strictly for the hard core sugar addict!) :D

PS: We're just back from British Isles Cruise where I had Irish Coffee for the first time ever in Dublin....that was REALLY REALLY good!!!!

  4. Sounds like you might be on the same cruise as us! Flying back to Long Island on the 15? We opted for the earlier flight. Hope it works out. Was shocked to see that they didn't have an earlier afternoon flight on between the 10 and 5 flights!

Not this time....we're flying the following week! I agree, there's nothing mid day from FLL to ISP....everything is early or late and we opted for late, but like I said, I don't handle stress well at all!!! Hope you make it with time to spare. :)

  5. We did Baltics in August and weather was wonderful...this is Northern Europe so it doesn't get as hot as places like Paris that are further south. All of the ports we visited were crowded but with more adults than children. Shops and restaurants were all open and while crowded not unpleasantly so. We did HOHO buses in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Talinn and never waited more than 10 minutes. Tivoli in Copenhagen was wonderfully NOT crowded, Stockholm rained and Talinn was also NOT crowded . Berlin is always crowded! We had no trouble getting seated in restaurants and there were no lines to speak of. St. Pete is also always crowded but there's plenty of room! Been there several times and it's one of my favorite world cities, with lots to see and do...unfortunately 2 days is not enough and if you've never been there or have no plans to go back I would recommend the comprehensive 2 day tour either with shore excursion of one of the Russian tour companies, several of which are exceptionally good. It's pricey and it's physically demanding but you'll get to see pretty much everything from Peterhof to the Hermitage. If you have plenty of time I also recommend the B2B with Norway. X only does one of those (I think) per season and IMHO Norway is one of the most beautiful places we've been. We did Med in October and it was wonderful....and like previous posters, would NOT go there in August....there's a reason why the natives go on vacation in August!

  6. I think your decision has to be based on how well you and your spouse handle stress....I admit I do not handle it well and when I am stressed out I tend to make mistakes and "lose" things....like passports, boarding passes, ID...I was faced with same decision yesterday when I was booking our return flights from Silhouette in March. We had a choice between 10 a.m. or 5 p.m. DH suggested it would be better for both our mental health to take the 5 p.m....have b'fast on board, leave behind the madness...have a leisurely lunch at the airport and time for a quick dinner in BWI before our final flight. It's not for everybody.....but you're not everybody so do what you can live comfortably with.

BTW as an aside.....it you're arriving at the airport 4+ hours ahead of flight time check-in with the curbside check-in....they'll take your luggage when you get there....the airlines sometimes won't let you check in until 3 hours before flight (Southwest).

  7. Sharon...as one nurse to another we both now that we're the worst patients and the minute symptoms are involved immediately skip over all the minor ones and jump full speed ahead to the MOST serious ones. That being said I sincerely hope your BFF gets good news...don't know if this helps, but I had similar symptoms that turned out to be a clot.....that was 4 years ago and I'm still here. Keep us posted. We really do care.

  8. We are booked in 9292, does anyone have any feedback on this cabin. It is midship just off the bump aft, starboard.

My DH has back pain from disease so vibrations are out of the question. Please post any update to this condition. Thanks.

We were on Eclipse 8/5-8/18/18 on deck 10 mid-ship bump...port side and had no problems with vibration at all. I only had one b-fast in the Ocean View and didn't notice vibration there either. We did meet people who had their cabin changed due to vibration but they were on deck 8 and I think that's where most of the problems originated. I have to be honest....I've sailed on Eclipse 5 times and never noticed vibration anywhere on board...however as previous poster has said a lot can happen in a few months on a cruise ship. It seems like there are very few complaints when you consider the number of passengers on the ship. Of course if you're in a cabin that vibrates that's the only one that counts! :(

  10. The Summit must be in a bad cycle. Last week the Captain came on and said were slowing down on the way to Bermuda to medevac a passenger off the ship. In an hour we did not have the medevac and we sped up. About midnight on Tuesday we saw the lights of Bermuda, 8 hours before docking time. At 1am we saw a bright light and noticed a pilot boat tying up to the Summit. About 20 minutes later the pilot boat sped away.

The next morning we docked right on time at 8:30am. We were told by another passenger that the medevac was cancelled due to the ill passenger passing away. We were told it was a 13 year old boy who had an aneurysm in the gym. Very sad.

OMG....13 years old??? That's is so sad. :loudcry:

  11. I find it surprising and interesting at the same time, that people that can afford the luxury of a suite and Luminae, can also unfortunately, afford to be rude. I once thought, that luxury and prestige meant also class and honor. I guess it is not always true.

I hope OP that you were able to enjoy your cruise anyway!

Sadly, some of the rudest and crudest are also the wealthiest. Spending a lot of time in NYC I have met homeless people who were polite and kind and I have met wealthy people who seem to think that because of WHO they are, everyone else should step aside until THEY have what they want.. Proves the old adage about wealth not meaning class!

  12. Unfortunately, the one we're looking at leaves from Tampa, so we'll still have to get down to Florida. I tried to get this group to join us on Summit from Bayonne to Bermuda in May, but it was a no-go due to scheduling, sigh.

Oh well....we take our annual "escape the winter" cruise every year and leave either from Lauderdale or Miami. Thank goodness for Southwest....You should be able to fly Florida non-stop from LGA. Of course if a snow storm is approaching you just might have to fly to FL. a day or 2 or 6 early to avoid missing the cruise. Sometimes you just have to make lemonade!!!! ;p

  13. We had a passenger medically evacuated with appendicitis one day out of Baltimore on the Grandeur of the Seas....we had front row seats from our balcony and scariest part (to me) was that chopper couldn't land....they dropped a bucket stretcher We and 2 coast guardsmen and hauled her and her husband up in 2 trips....she was taken to Naval Base in Virginia Beach for surgery. I think I would have died before we got to the chopper! At least we know crewmember will receive top notch medical treatment.

Somewhere between typing and posting my comment was altered!!! WE did not assist CG in hauling passenger and her husband off the ship. We WATCHED as the CG did all the work!!!! Sorry if anyone mistook my post.

  15. LOL, I have no doubt that we will be among the drunks on this cruise. Good to know that the entertainment options will be better than on X, though. We don't really care about shows when it's just the two of us but I think with this particular group of friends, we will enjoy the entertainment as a group. ;p

DH and I always cruise X and have been on 1 RCI cruise and loved it. Ourdaughter and SIL always cruise on RCI and they LOVE it. I think if you're going with a fun group of friends you'll bring your fun with you and have a great time. One good thing is sailing from NYC in the winter...you won't have to worry about getting to the ship if the weather is bad. :D

  16. all of the above are true but I just got off Eclipse British Isles and our included unlimited wifi perk was for both DH and me using separate devices at the same time. We each had our own sign in code, password and account #. Only complaint I had was the terrible time I had signing in every darn day! I became recognizable to the I-tech guys and even they couldn't figure out what was going on. I was using my Samsung phone and DH was using his Kindle Fire. He had no trouble signing in.

  17. I have same issue with DH being diabetic. First off don't wait till you get on the ship to handle this. If you're Elite, you're probably Captains Club. Call them and tell them your issue and they will not only get you early dining, but they'll mark your information and you won't have to ask for it every time you book a cruise....additionally they'll notify MDR staff and your waiter will ask your DH if he has any dietary restrictions and make suggestions accordingly.

  18. We did this tour last March when we docked in Miami and flew from Ft. Lauderdale. We left the ship around 8:30 and got to the airport around 12 p.m. First it is NOT in the Everglades.....at least ours wasn't....it was in Sawgrass State Park....the alligator feeding was a waste of time but the airboat ride was great! We had done two prior to this one (Everglades NP and Lake Topo, Kissimmee) so we had something to compare it with and I would say this was the best of the three.....we saw many alligators and had one swim right up to the boat.....lots of birds and the ride was 1 hour. We had a flight at 5 p.m. and got to the airport around Noon, but we knew that and planned to have a leisurely lunch/dinner at the airport since we wouldn't be home till almost midnight. I was concerned about having to haul our luggage because Southwest won't let you check bags until 3 or 4 hours before flight time but a very helpful gate agent quietly suggested we go back outside to curbside check-in and the sky caps would check our bags. THAT was a valuable bit of information!! If you've never done an airboat ride I would not hesitate to recommend this one....the "zoo" is totally touristy...there's limited food (ice-cream and soft drinks) but the airboat was fun and the bathrooms were clean.

  19. Time to eat some of my words....on vibration. I just spent an hour walking the decks from 10-12 plus the ovc on 14.

Yes, if you stand on the starboard side near the salad area, there is stronger vibration....but not on deck 12 under it. The following is subjective...me just standing in the hallway..listening, stopping to see floor vibration, feeling the handrail.....it’s one mans view. Note: none of these were obvious...no rattling...but there seemed to be a little more vibration. Do not panic if you have one of these cabins, but if you are ultra sensitive...well maybe..

    1625-1647

I had my hypercritical senses on...buffet..the pizza and pasta makers/servers were not wearing gloves! No, I did not say anything....maybe I should have..oh well!!

Someone tell me how to imbed pictures and I’ll post some dessert island...and salad bar pictures.

I have yet to pass any staff member who didn’t smile and say good morning or hello. Everyone seems to enjoy working on this ship....

we were in 1245 and had no vibration at any time.:D

  20. Just off the Eclipse and the Ireland/Scotland/England tour. Lots of fun. Be sure to check out the Hot Glass Show, it was so much fun. I made an ornament, it was heavy, but it made it home without a mishap. It was fun to watch others make their project. The pro glass blowers help you at every step and explained what to do and why. It was a great experience.

The vibrations were felt in the Ocean View Café (deck 14) every day. But I didn't notice them in our cabin midship Deck 8. Was assured by officers that the ship was safe and to not worry. Have a great cruise.

We were on the same cruise as you and apparently there were some problems on Deck 8 with location variations. We had breakfast with a fellow cc poster and she said her cabin on 8 was so bad it made her husband ill. They were moved to an inside cabin for that night and were later moved to a comparable cabin where they had no problems....take notice that the ship had quite a few empty cabins on the aforementioned cruise so a cabin change was not a big issue but if the ship is full there's not much they can do. We were on the aft bump on deck 10 and had no problems with vibration. I only had b-fast once in Ocean View and didn't notice anything there either. Seas were very calm considering the reputations of the North Sea area. There was one day that was a teeny bit rough but not enough to really notice unless you're really sensitive.

  21. Minnied: OB eclipse....my room is fine BUT had lunch with couple today who said the vibration was so bad her husband got sick. Fortunately ship not full so they were immediately moved to inside cabin and GR is "working on a solution" ... i'm on Deck 10 port side aft bump...problem seems to be deck 8 midships. I don't know what to tell you. DH is a civil engineer..he says whatever it is is structural...not an easy fix...probably need dry dock. Sorry, wish I had better news. I think I would try a cabin chang NOW if you"re on deck 8 midship.

  22. We have enjoyed three cruises with Uniworld. No complaints, great serviceI was somewhat disappointed in our American Cruise Line experience. While the food was excellent and the staterooms spacious, organization was lacking. The staff seemed to be really trying, but communication from corporate was not adequate. (Beautiful scenery along the Columbia and Snake Rivers, but not a line I choose to repeat.)

Interesting we had the same experience on ACL on the Columbia/Snake River cruise. Cabins were spacious, tours were outstanding, dining room service was terrible. I asked for b-fast of cottage cheese with a small dish of berries....45 minutes later I went into the kitchen and demanded to know where my b-fast was since everyone else had eaten and left and they were getting ready to shut down the dining room because the wait staff did double duty as the housekeeping staff!!!! Loved the itinerary but I'll never book with them again.

  23. Steve- Really appreciate the detailed review of your Viking river cruise experience and how you contrasted it with an ocean cruise on Celebrity.

Our 1st river cruise, on the Avalon Illumination in the cheapest cabin on the Swan Deck,, is 15 months away. Well, it's not the first as for some reason I don't think to count our Yangtze River cruise on the President 7 which was actually very enjoyable except for the food.

I hope we have a good experience with the Legendary Danube itinerary- the included excursions seem to suit us, although we do plan on the Czeky Krumlov and Royal Waltz in Vienna add-ons. We are with a group of friends which should add to the fun. It was good to read the post about the rebate Avalon offered when a barge blocked the river.

On of the shocks in researching river cruises is the policy of non-refundable deposits- Viking wants !000 per couple, Avalon 500. AMA requires 800, but will refund half of that.

This is one of the reasons why we've never chosen Viking...plus they require 100% payment waaaay in advance of the trip.

Anyone interested in River Cruising should check out the river cruising forum. Like this one, it will give you lots of information.
