  1. This is our first cruise with RCCL. There are 6 of us going on the Grandeur over Thanksgiving. We selected anytime dining figuring we could meet up and go to the MDR for for the evening meal. My sister talked to RCCL tonight and the told her that they only had tables for two and would not be able to be seated together. I have sailed on many cruise lines and have never seen this. I am hoping there is a misunderstanding. Unfortunately my sister and her husband signed up for late dining.

Hi! Just got off the Grandeur on the 21st of September and I can tell you that this is absolutely UNTRUE!!! There are a variety of table sizes,2-4- 6-8 -10 and 12! However, you can go into Cruise Planner, pick your preferred dining time, and add the reservation #'s of the couples that you wish to dine with, and then it's all linked together BEFORE you get on board> Then, all you have to do is go to the Dining Room on Sail Away and confirm your time (or change it) and then there is no worrying about being seated together. The staff is very pleasant and easy-to-deal with!

Enjoy your cruise! You will love RCCL ! - Miriam (21 cruises and 3 more on my horizon!)

  2. Also, Grandeur seemed a bit small for my taste, but oppressively small.

    Matt

Matt, Did you mean to use the adverb "oppressively" ? That sounds rather terrible. I know opinions are subjective but I've been on RCCL's ships of that class and I don't think that they are "oppressive" and to someone new, reading about the Grandeur, they might get the wrong idea. She is certainly not one of the mega-ships, but then no one books her for that reason!

  3. Whew! So glad now that my Empress cruise is NOT going to Cozumel!!! As a "Yankee", I would probably have to ask the CD to show "Gone with the Wind" !! Lol !

    - Clancy (who knows not to bring credit cards, that there is almost no air conditioning, and you have to take your own T.P. ashore with you!).

  4. FYI for anyone planning a cruise with Royal Caribbean...if Cuba is on your itinerary there is a mandatory charge of $75 per person for a Visa whether you get off the boat or not. It is charged on your account Day 1 of sailing. This fee is not included in the cost of the cruise. I think this info should be disclosed at time of booking. The website makes it look like a treat to go there. Personally, the only reason I was interested in the cruise was to go to Cozumel. Disappointed with RCCI at this time.

When you actually make your booking, and BEFORE you put down your deposit, you are advised by the RCCL agent of the Visa fee. It is also on the website under "Cuba". Plus, also, after doing some research, I see that you have already been to Cozumel, on the Oasis, back in April of 2010, so you know that there are MANY RCCL ships that stop in Cozumel. . So, you can save your disappointment for something that actually deserves it. Lol !

  5. Hi! - I have one of the following products (sorry - I couldn't get it to copy the picture or make the print smaller!). It is an amazing product! It is a soft sided purse-like safe, that goes over the metal tubing of the chair or railing that you are near, and locks with a 3 digit combination lock that SAFELY holds your iPhone, SetSail pass, glasses, etc. inside while you swim, go to the restroom, etc. I LOVE IT!!! I got it after seeing it on Shark Tank and I highly recommended it. It is not terribly large but for a single person or a couple it is perfect! You won't be sorry!

Hope this helps you! - Miriam

  7. You can take a picture of the clock at ANY TIME as it counts down to zero. The attendant finishes the mission for all "crews" so that every group can take a picture that says "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED". There is no correlation between that the countdown clock and the mission accomplished clock. After you leave the ship, and you never see your "crew mates/ mission crew again, you can say anything you want.

Does it really matter, as long as you had fun ? We got 5 extra minutes to finish it and felt just as happy as if we did it in 30. AND WE GOT THE LIGHTS ON IN UNDER 3 MINUTES! That wasn't the "part" that slowed us down! Lol !

  8. 2 Cabins = $ 900 Difference

    $ 450 Difference a Cabin

    2 "Bodies" to a Cabin

    $ 225 a "Body"

    7 Night Cruise

    $ 225 divided by 7 nights = $ 32.15 a "Body" a Night.

Harmony - New Ship - More Bars & Restaurants, Bionic Bar, Puzzle Room-Escape the Rubicon, The Abyss, 2 Wet Slides, GREAT shows (especially Grease and Columbus, the Musical) (great for Adults & Kids), An all new ice show with new technology for the ice graphics themselves, Focus (A better way for the photo gallery then the Oasis & Allure), a nicer miniature golf course. These are just some things I saw on my recent Harmony cruise. And I loved the Allure.

The Diamond Lounge on Deck 4 looked like Death's Waiting Room. Somber, Quiet, Boring, Beige, Full of Canes, Walkers, Scooters etc. NEVER choose a ship for that reason!!!!

Hoped this helps a little! - Miriam

  9. Hi!

Here is a copy of the answer I posted on another thread about a year ago, describing the "Dragon's Breath" procedure. Maybe this will help a little!

......................First, you have to sign the waivers. Then you have to get a harness that fits you and make sure it's in perfect condition and comfortable. Then you have to watch the training video (about 15 minutes, if I remember). Then you walk over to the small zip line training area, and do a short, training run zip line. It's approximately 300 ft. (once again, I think-from memory) over dry land, and just a little bit above ground, maybe 15-20 ft.

If you make it through all that, you board open topped trucks that drive you to the top of the mountain, up a very steep and winding road to the takeoff platform. You zipline down in combinations of 5 lines at a time. 2 - 2- 1, so that couple can go side-by-side and singles can go by themselves and not get between couples. At the bottom, you return your harness and get a picture taken, if you want one. All this definitely takes an hour.

If anyone decides to back out, the time to do it is BEFORE the truck ride. You can still get a refund then. Once you go to the top, you are committed. You can still back out, and ride the truck down, but there is no refund.

Hope this helps! IT IS A GREAT ZIP DOWN!!!! - Miriam

...................My friends just did it about 2 weeks ago, when we were on Labadee on the Harmony. They said everything I had told them was ALMOST exactly the same from from the times that I had done it, but now, instead of a ladder to get people to the launching platform, and hooking up your safety line once you get on the platform, they hook the safety line before you walk up a RAMP to the launch platform. Still the longest (1/2 mile) zip line over water (500 ft in the air) with speeds up to 40 miles an hour, with unbelievably gorgeous views from the platform!!! Grab that price and go!!!

  10. Regarding the answers: don't cruise. you mostly complain etc.

    Let me explain:

We relocated from Canada 8 years ago, and currently we don't live in US/Canada. We will travel 18 hours just to get to Florida. This is once in a decade trip for us, a trip of 5 weeks long, and I'm trying to get the best out of it. The cruise vacation supposed to be the grand finale of the trip.

And I do have concerns. I admit.

I know the kids would love it! there are so many activities for kids on the Harmony, they would be thrilled!

I've read so many cruise reviews, and saw many youtubes, but couldn't find the information / youtubes I need for family cruising. And I'm hearing different opinions from people that cruised: some love it, some don't.

I'm trying to get information to make sure this is the right choice for our trip. It's not like: we'll try cruise this year, and if we don't like it we'll go to Hawaii next year...

So, please be patient. The answers really really help!

    Hi!

I don't know what book stores you have access to, but here in the US, one of the biggest is Barnes and Noble, which has an excellent reputation. They do quite a bit online selling as well. I found a book which I think could be helpful for you, perhaps. It is:

Everything Family Guide To Cruise Vacations: A Complete Guide to the Best Cruise Lines, Destinations, And Excursions

    by Kim Kavin.

I hope you can find it and that it helps you. Good luck! - Miriam

  11. Excuse my ignorance as a 1st time cruiser:

I see it odd... so many people replied here saying that they experienced sea sickness (to different degrees), and still continue to book cruising...

Why? What is so great about it that it's worth the risk? And taking medicines during a vacation? what is so exciting about it?

For your own sake, stay home. You are not yet ready to cruise. If you have to ask the question "What's so great about it ?" , then you don't know enough about it and you need to do more research, watch more videos, get some books etc., AND GET EXCITED ABOUT CRUISING!!!!

It's the most wonderful way to vacation!!!! Until you feel that way, you will just be either annoyed or annoying, bored or boring, finding fault or complaining. It's not the right fit YET especially with kids! YOU have to be knowledgeable enough about cruising and the ship you've chosen to set up their activities in the children's center for them. The Harmony is a huge ship. You have to be ready for it. You just can't go on it and just expect the crew to do all the planning for you. You have to have planned ahead for it. (Dining, shows, excursions, Royal IQ, ships activities, drink packages, internet, kids activities, gratuities etc. ) You only have 7 days (usually, unless you're doing a B2B) and it goes by EXTREMELY fast.

Ask a lot of questions before you go 9 here on Cruise Critic - look for the appropriate thread) so that you will be ready for it. Seasickness should NOT be your only determining factor ! Good luck!!!

  12. Hi!

I, too, highly recommend Captain Bob. He has more than 1 boat for his charters and he groups his guests by age and abilities, and also by requests, based on the answers to his questions, as to what your interests are, as to what you what to do, on your excursion.

The walk to his pier/dock from the cruise ship, is about 15 minutes, along a busy road, in the hot sun. It could be tiring, especially with small children, after a day in the water and sun. You can easily get a quick taxi ride, inexpensively.

The 12 meter yacht racing is great, too, but not for children. Not Orient Beach, either.

    Hope this helps! - Miriam

  13. As part of the weekend sale I noticed that some of the excursions on Labadee are on sale. Before I book any I had a few questions.

Finally, I've booked the Zip Line for me (yipes!). Does it really take an hour to get through the processing and up there? Asking as I'm trying to plan a good time to go and not miss lunch or other activities.

Many thanks in advance for any insights or tips :):)

  14. Hi!

There is absolutely NOTHING on RCCL's very accurate, up-to-the minute, posting on their website about the Port of Baltimore and/or the Granduer of the Seas. It lists ALL the other Ports and Ships that have been affected over the last 4-5 days days, with advisories, warnings, closures, refund info. etc. etc., so I find your post HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS (:D) , and your parents very CONFUSED (). Nice try to cause trouble from a non-Royal cruiser!

  15. Hi!

Maybe this will be the return of some fall, 7 night cruises to Bermuda from Cape Liberty that were SO popular, that of course, then Royal decided to do away with them, and return to the "quickies" of 5 nights! You just get there, spin around and run back onboard! Drives me crazy! I still take them, because any Bermuda is better than no Bermuda, but the Freedom and 3 days in Bermuda {{ big sigh }}. Here's hoping !

  16. Just saw this on another thread!

Well my hubby and I would be interested in all of the above. We are a family of 5. My hubby Barry 55, Me Roe I will 47 tomorrow, my son Frankie 16, my son Joey 14 and my MIL Lucille 70. This will be our 2nd time on the Oasis, and we are looking forward to it.

So, actually her husband is a "senior", too, by AARP standards, and her MIL had Barry when she was 15! You go, Lucille! She'll do fine on the cruise! Just get out of her way! You worry about Barry!

    (All tongue-in-cheek, you know;))

  17. Hi!

Did my 10th Quest (or so) this past September on the Jewel with Dennis Charles as CD. We had a couple cruising with us on their very first cruise, so their very first Quest as well. I wouldn't tell them all the details, so as not to give it away or spoil it for them, but I did tell them it was not for the shy or bashful.

I was wrong! Either it was the destination (Alaska) or the CD (Dennis) but it was quite G-rated, calm and very short. Still funny and worth going (we won!) but not ANYTHING like I was used to or expecting (Richard Spacey, Allan Brooks, Leigh Xuereb & Erky!) etc.

I'm set for the Harmony in January - wondering how that one might compare?!?

    - Miriam
