  1. There is a website that tracks prices on a selected cruise and sends you an e-mail if the price drops. Unfortunately, they charge for this (but it is not much).

There is another one that tracks prices for free. But Cruise Critic doesn't let us mention other travel agents.

  2. From what I have seen, GENERALLY the prices are higher when you have Explore 4. Sometimes they are not however, so you really need to do your homework. Plus, just today, I noticed that a couple of Explore 4 cruises have gone up in price a bit, at least in the category I was looking at.

The current prices likely include a "mark-up" for the Explore 4 promotion. Since I can't take advantage of the Drinks Package, I will wait to see if a different promotion comes up, or maybe a price reduction.

  3. No swim against the current pool on the Royal. There are three pools--the main pool, a small plunge pool and the adult retreat pool. The first two have lots of shallow areas where you can sit on the edge of the pools.

Is the adult retreat pool open to everyone or is it extra cost?

  4. The Princess 14 night Caribbean cruises are now two seven day cruises. And the nine night cruises are now a combined five and four night cruise.

Why has Princess abandoned the long cruise market in the Caribbean?

Also, the Hawaii cruises are 15 nights, but now only go to four ports compared to the five ports that they did a few years ago. Even Carnival has a five port, 15 night cruise to Hawaii.

What is up with Princess marketing?

  5. Let you children dine where they wish. Lots of free kid friendly food on board such as soft ice cream, burgers, fries, dogs, pizza, doughnuts, danish, soft cookies & milk, popcorn at the movies, plus all the stuff in the buffet. Most stuff available most hours of the day.

Cruising is a good way to expose children to different kinds of food. They can sample anything on the dining room menu. If they don't like it, they can order something else. Our 7 year old tried frogs legs and liked it. Where else can you expose children to different foods, all for free? And they can still get pizza, burgers, etc if they want to.

"It was the vacation from hell for thousands of passengers stuck on-board the Carnival Triumph. A fire knocked out the ship's power, which meant no air conditioning, no lights, little food and water… and no flushing toilets. Conditions were so bad it was nicknamed "The Poop Cruise." Now CNN has learned that the ship set sail with only four of six generators operating and knew of a generator fire hazard across its fleet of ships. Investigative Correstpondent Drew Griffin is Keeping Them Honest."

  7. We are arriving Ashdod Port. I know that taxis are available there, but will any of the taxi drivers be willing to take passengers to north of Tel Aviv (Netanya area)? Or do I need to make arrangements in advance with a taxi company?

We are visiting friends, have been to Israel many times, and just need transportation (not a tour). We will meet the ship two days later in Haifa.

  8. Thanks everyone for your comments. I resurrected the thread because HAL is a line many of us on this board enjoy cruising and after having discussions with many people on my last cruise about cost cutting measures and the noticeable slide in standards, I did some searching yesterday and came across this thread. While more than two years old, I think resurrecting it again allows us to reflect on what many have been discussing already as well as a chance to comment on where things stand now.

On the last cruise I took, I met more than one person (about five people) who had originally purchased an interior cabin- I'd say 3/5 of these were upgraded to Ocean View. What was also striking was that this group of people, without exception, did not purchase shore excursions (or purchased only the transfers into town), did not purchase drinks from the bar, and did not purchase treatments from the spa. And in one case, made grudging comments about the hotel service charge.

One of our dining companions noticed the same trend, and he commented on how the inside cabins are often sold at cost. And noticing that this group of passengers were not buying anything on board, I realized that HAL was probably taking a bath on them. So it begs the question, if the company is filling the ships with increasing numbers of these passengers, how can the company make enough money to continue to provide a consistent standard of service?

I'm not attempting to begrudge anyone their desire to vacation on a strict budget- I understand that. But what I found ironic in one case of the group of five that I referred to was that the passenger expressed disappointment that organic jams and jellies were not available on the ship. Made me wonder, how people expect to have their cake and eat it too (cheap cruise with expensive amenities)? I guess if I had paid cost for a cabin and not purchased anything on the ship, I wouldn't expect organic jams/jellies.

So it would seem that many people want a high level of quality but not everyone is willing to pay for it. It would seem to me that at some point HAL needs to decide how they are going to distinguish themselves in the marketplace, in order to ensure healthy profits and margins with which to provide a good standard of excellence.

Why should you care about what other people spend on-board? And what do you mean that HAL sells cabins at "cost?" Did you follow people around to check out how much they were spending?

  9. Aros, the latin quarter and Den Gamle comes to mind but I have to get back to you regarding transportation because I don't know the locations around in Aarhus.

But try to see if the English version of rejseplanen.dk and visitaarhus.com can help you.

I have not been able to find much information on Aarhus local transportation, other than taxis. Do you have any other suggestions or information?
