Lime street station is just a road crossing away from the station itself. Or you could use Jury's hotel right next door

to Lime street station which we have not used yet .

Further down the road we used the Premier Inn which was near the marina and other attractions.

If you decide on a cruise from Liverpool or just a visit , it's very easy for  people with a car or even using the rail service.

The Liner Hotel just behind Lime St station is worth considering too. Convenient location, free parking (unlike most other in city) and a nautical theme. Also reasonably priced as long as there isn’t a match on...

Well I'm going to be the cheerleader for Dorset: areas of outstanding natural beauty in the Purbecks, Jurassic coast, beautiful beaches, Abbotsbury, Monkey World, tanks, I could go on.

My Mum lives in Formby and I can certainly recommend a trip there to (hopefully) see the Red squirrels. The nature Reserve there is National Trust and leads down to a stunning beach lined with sand dunes. Also Anthony Gormleys 'Another Place' isn t too far away

Yes at a push you could probably do Crosby, Formby and Southport in a day. The first time I took my partner to Southport she was appalled that you could walk to the end of the pier and still not see the sea...

We may not have the temperatures that some foreign countries have but we certainly have some stunning scenery and interesting sights

Yes and I think it's all too easy to take it all for granted. If you (re)read Bill Bryson's books about the UK he points out what is under our nose and how lucky we are...

In answer to the question, how about Liverpool? Some world class museums (Tate Liverpool, Maritime Museum, Museum of Liverpool, and the Walker Art Gallery), architecture (Three Graces, Georgian Quarter, two Cathedrals, and the Philharmonic pub, now Grade 1 listed), history, sport, eating out and entertainment. The Mersey Tunnel tour is unmissable.

Get out of the city and take day trips to Formby for its red squirrels, Port Sunlight and Chester, or get some fresh air and walk the Wirral Way.

I grew up not far from there and met my parents when they took a UK cruise that included Liverpool. It was interesting reading the Cunard guide to my home town, and my parents said that all the passengers were raving (if a Cunard passenger can "rave") at what a fantastic day they'd had - for many it was the highlight of the cruise...

Without reopening a whole can of worms, you are aware that the incident in question was a total non event, aren't you?

I wasn’t but it doesn’t matter - it was widely reported as fact at the time (along with some sneering comments in the Daily Mail about sailaway parties). What’s that quote about a lie travelling halfway around the world before the truth has got its shoes on?

The initial lurid reports are what people remember not the more boring facts confirmed after the event.

One incident like this, splashed over the Mail online is likely to persuade many people considering a cruise for the first time not to bother. Cruising has a big enough image problem as it is right now. I don’t think P&O needs anymore headlines about brawling clowns for a while.

Thinking about it, it would prob be prudent for cruise ships to sail below capacity for a while, if only to make social distancing easier. I would definitely prefer to pay a “normal” price for a holiday on a slightly emptier ship than be on a cheap cruise full of bargain hunters...

  6. There may be some “loss leader” offers via Peninsular Club but I don’t think there will be an outpouring of cheap fares in general.

Flog ‘em too cheap and you run the risk of setting unrealistic pricing expectations for the future.

Plus there’s the risk of a trip turning into a “booze cruise” with the the subsequent anti social behaviour and negative publicity. I’m thinking of this sort of thing...

P&O’s generally fair prices on board could be a “double edged sword” here...

  7. First P&O cruise was the Oceana in 2016.

Up until then had only been on EasyCruise and Cunard. EasyCruises round Greece and Belgium and Holland many years ago were great fun and I'd still be going on them now if they were still running.

We later got into the habit of going away with my parents each year on Cunard. I enjoyed them but quite a few things niggled me - the overly formal dress code (I don't want to wear a suit on holiday!), drinks prices were taking the Mickey (I was a drinker then), evening entertainment wasn't great (although the speakers were superb).

Then one year I saw an offer on the Oceana and suggested we try that.

It was just wonderful - a sensible dress code, great choice in the MDR, Headliners entertainment far better than anything we'd seen on Cunard, realistic prices at the bars and for excursions. And lots of nice touches such as the tureens of hot chocolate and Horlicks at the buffet late at night! We haven't looked back since...

A few years ago there was an exhibition on ocean liners at the V&A and it was there that I learned that P&O has a history as long and prestigious as any other shipping line you could mention. Although we may have missed the "Golden Age" of cruising, if you pick up a copy of "P&O across the oceans, across the years" you will see that many gripes you read on Cruise Critic about fellow passengers' behaviour were being made almost word for word in the "glamour years"

I know you like to have a pop, but in all honesty, did you expect the shares to fall to £7 in 2 months? If you did, I assume you will have made a fortune.

No of course not but at the same time I was advising caution you were suggesting they were a bargain.

Sure, the flu panic is causing a short term share price fall, but the business is basically sound, and over a 10 to 15  year time scale the shares are a good long term buy, especially at the current price. Obviously, just my opinion- we'll see if I am right in 2035!

If you had asked me a month or two ago whether P&O would go bust, then I would have said no way...

Surely the issue is whether Carnival goes bust rather than P&O? Don’t they “stand or fall” together? Surely Carnival can’t let one brand “go to the wall” and keep others on life support...?

I was minded to request a full refund but having received the email offering the alternative of 125% FCC I am tempted to go for this, and put the money towards a Norwegian cruise next year.

The only thing that is giving me pause is the lack of protection if I go down the FCC route. I need to be confident the cruise will go ahead.

I have plenty of time to make a decision so will sleep on it for a while. But I am relieved that the rumours on here of possibly having to wait for two years for a cash refund were “fake news”...!

    - Why should the customers provide an interest free loan to the travel industry?

This is the key point really isn’t it. To say nothing of the excitement of hoping that they don’t go bust in the meantime...

If we do get offered a credit note on a “take it or leave it” basis following a cancelled cruise, presumably we could go down the S75 or chargeback route with our credit card company - goods paid for and not provided...?

    • Thanks 1
  11. As soon as this mess is firmly in the rear view mirror I will be looking to book again.

I am sure my cruise at the end of April will be cancelled. It's annoying I'm still waiting for a decision, but I can understand P&O dragging their feet over pulling the plug.

However irritating this situation is, look at the people stuck in Morocco, the Philippines, and Peru to name just three. At least with a cruise you aren't going to be dumped on the quayside and left to sort yourself out...

I have had some wonderful holidays on P&O and look forward to booking again. I enjoy the food and most of the entertainment, and unlike some other cruise lines, I don't feel like I'm having my pants pulled down every time I buy a drink or book an excursion.

This may be one reason for the brinkmanship being operated by P&O at present. They are waiting to the very last minute to cancel cruises in the expectation/hope that clients will opt for an FCC

But then why did they offer generous OBC for people to continue their cruise?

Not disagreeing with you, it’s just the OBC offer seems a bit odd if they want people to cancel their cruises...

A couple of questions,we are sailing on the Azura 26th July...We have paid £250 deposit and our remining £4000 balance is due April 12th. We have no intentions of cancelling and the added £400 OBC is a nice bonus...

    1. If P & O cancel the cruise, do we get our money back in full?

    2. If we miss a shore stop and we have booked an excursion do we get our money back?

    3. We have a Sea view cabin, what are the chances of an upgrade?

1 If they cancel it, yes

     2 Yes

3 No idea. Be careful if they do offer you an “upgrade” though - it might be for example a slightly higher grade cabin but in a less desirable part of the ship. This is why some people specify “do not upgrade” on their booking.
