  1. Hi Ruth,

I have always been curious, how does the person you give the tip to know what you have done visa via the standard charge? I guess they are required to check with the front desk? I am sure your room stewards knows but others, a bartender or waiter may not even know who you are.

I'm not RuthC, but when we give "a little extra" we include a note saying that we've paid the HSC, that this is a "little extra thanks", with our names and cabin #. I like the recipient to be able to provide an audit trail, should the need arise.

  2. We have made our initial deposit for a cruise on HAL and as time goes on, we would like to purchase OBC's from HAL. Question: If we have to cancel before final payment is due, will we get a refund of our OBC's?

Yes you will receive a refund of any money you spent to buy yourself OBCs, if you have to cancel.

  3. I thought I heard my name:) Here's some info from my sister, "The Second Sister", regarding our docking experience in Sitka last year on the Westerdam in early May:

Rowsby's link above also works very well:)

I think it was either you or your sister made comment (in some thread) that the dock area scenery was still enjoyable. Or was that someone else? I know I paid attention because DH and I were heading to Sitka on our cruise

  4. Absolutely! (Two names were on your quote.) I agree with you completely. The OP experienced sexual harassment at the hand of men under HAL's control. Guest Services should have investigated immediately.

Agreed. And not only investigated, taken whatever action needed to ensure the guest enjoyed the rest of her cruise. IMHO, HAL really dropped the ball.

Lovely Other I hope you hear from HAL soon, and they apologize in a meaningful way for their ridiculous response onboard.

  5. Is the old Industrial Dock as unattractive as it sounds? We have always enjoyed the beautiful anchorage while in Sitka and are disappointed by the change. Please tell me it's not as bad as it sounds-----

Either Middle Aged Mom or The Second Sister did a pretty extensive blog/review of their cruise to Alaska, and their experience at the dock, which they found quite attractive. I'll try to find it later.

  6. When I read the first post it seemed to me that the poster was asking about HAL's process for handling customer complaints.

She was not asking for validation of her complaint. She was not asking for the usual cadre of posters who, with startling regularity, seem to defend HAL and discount a poster's comments for everything even though they have zero knowledge of the specific situation.

Her question about her customer service issue and what to expect from the process was telling. There appears to be NO process, no reasonable acknowledgement process, and the results of an initial contact with HAL's customer service people seem to be haphazard at best.

That is not good enough for a customer service organization IMHO, especially one in the hospitality business.

Thank you for that post, I agree!

  7. You obviously have had no experience with anxiety or panic disorders.

Someone who suffers from this should not be "blown off" with a statement to "stay home". Instead they should be encouraged to be brave and try to do everything they desire to do. Sometimes all it takes is the support from friends and family that helps the person cope.

Please have compassion for others, even if you don't understand what they are going through because this could easily be you or someone in your family!

    BRAVA! :)

OP, I hope you are able to see the support you are getting here! For me, I never know exactly what is going to cause an attack (other than flying -- that one is guaranteed). But remember your coping strategies, remember that the attack always passes. I hope you are able to enjoy your cruise!

  8. Just another point of view. :) I adore the Totem Heritage Center, and try to get there any time we stop in Ketchikan. I find that it touches my soul, somehow, being surrounded by all those old totem poles. It honestly brings me to tears, every time I am there.

My DH, on the other hand, thought it was merely "okay".

  9. I agree Cow Princess but doubt that a complaint to the Govt. would do any good.. Perhaps a complaint to Franceri or the company who supplies the workers would be appropriate..

    >snip<

I just want to clarify that is wasn't me who suggested contacting the government  :)

Those workers should, imho, have to watch while their mothers, sisters, daughters and wives are rudely and loudly harassed by other men. Maybe that'd give them pause, the next time they felt the need to do it to another woman

  10. Perhaps you should complain to the Italian government. They should instruct their men to be more sensitive.

Is that a joke? I hope so. Otherwise, I have to suspect you have no sisters, daughters, female friends, or female partner, or you might be a bit more sensitive to the issue. Whether or not you believe it, this is a real problem that women face regularly. Catcalling, commenting, regardless of the language being spoken.

I guess tomorrow I will just have to be better so we can go ashore in San Diego. And clear Customs and Immigration......

Now that I have slept the morning away, and had my cheese and crackers, I'm feeling better.

    >SNIP<

I'm sorry you were feeling unwell and glad you are feeling better now. Of course, if anything is going to cause a relapse, it'll likely be the Customs & Immigration process in San Diego.

WOW that seafood extravaganza looks wonderful :)

  12. Just to clarify the cause for my complaint isn't service related, even though at times that left a lot to be desired. The issue is that I was constantly ridiculed and harassed by the contractors onboard ... My Italian may be a little rusty but I understand enough to know when I'm being called fat and being laughed at. I like to walk the decks a lot especially during sail away and at one point they were fixing something at the front of deck 3 so I had to cut though the inside rather than walking around as each time I passed they would laugh and make derogatory remarks ... I ended up in tears and although both the front desk and security said they would deal with it I ended up being fobbed off with "it's because they're Italian". I lived and worked in Naples so I know how Italian men can be but I don't think I should have to deal with it on my holiday ....

That is disgraceful on so many levels. That it happened at all. That it was not addressed and corrected once you reported it. And that the workers were blamed and excused because of their nationality. I wonder how many Italians would have been offended, hearing their nationality being used to excuse boorish behaviour.

(Did you, at any time, want to dust off your dusty Italian skills and tell them their mothers would have been ashamed of them?)

  13. We've sailed several B2B cruises and understand the benefits. We are on Westerdam 18 OCT Mexico cruise out of Vancouver. After we booked HAL opened up the Vancouver to San Diego to Vancouver leg as a Pacific Coastal.

Will this then make our 11 night a "Collector Cruise" to get the few extra perks that come with a Collector?

We did that one a couple (few?) years ago, and had one booking number. We got nothing extra in the way of perqs.

  14. Sorry about that...I completely misunderstoond one of her posts ...I thought she posted them on that site for free & someone copied the pic..

The person who did the copying should be blacklisted from that WEB site IMO & maybe if someone could report them to Management at Cruise Critic they should be disciplined & lose their posting privledges..(sp?) My timer is going off for my oven..See you later..

No problem :) Sometimes things get a bit convoluted.

Back in post #32, the pay website denies that they are able to identify the source of the pictures. IMHO they know exactly where the pictures came from, but won't tell. Hopefully the pay site will be in touch with whoever did it, and there will be some consequences, but we'll never know.

  15. Cow Princess the OP did not post the pics on Cruise Critic..She posted them on the other WEB site which charges people & someone took one of her pics & reposted it without giving her credit..

I agree with you & would bet my last Dollar that the other WEB site owners do know who re-posted her picture without giving her credit..

No that isn't what happened. 1of4 posted her pictures only on CC. Somehow those pictures ended up being on the pay site. So, since 1of4 posted them only on CC, someone ELSE provided the pictures to the pay site.

  16. There is a parkade by the library. And if I am remembering correctly, there might be a surface lot, between the library parkade and the cruise ship dock area. But I don't think you'll be able to just pull up to your ship and park your car -- you will need to park and then walk to the ship.

  17. UPDATE

    >SNIP<

So do I believe that they don't know where the pictures came from...no. But they are apparently gone. I can't check as I am not a member but they responded quickly to and included the date. So we know what and where but do not know who.

    >SNIP<

    I agree with you.

That website knows exactly where those pictures came from. There are only two options.

Either that website has a staff member scouring CC for pictures to use, or someone is downloading pictures from CC, claiming they are the true owner(s), and then selling them to that website.

It was perpetrated by someone completely lacking in any sense of ethical behaviour. :( And that website knows who it was, even if they will never admit it

  18. Your example is more than a little different from OP's, though.

The OP wasn't paid for her picture by the site that is charging others to see it. Something is radically wrong there.

Which raises the question -- how did that site acquire that picture?
