  1. We are booked for Labor day (for the record, I'm a Boomer and my husband is Gen X).

The final payment is coming up quickly.....we are going to wait it out until the last minute and see if this cruise is really going to happen.  Or see if there's a great offer to rebook at a later date.  I was super excited about this ship and trying a new brand (although those chairs do make my knees hurt just by looking at them), and I thought the price we paid was reasonable.  Now we aren't sure what will happen because of the economy, the virus, and our jobs (I've been furloughed already).  This is a scary world full of a bunch of unknowns.

People are mixing up two different things...

    1. On the first formal night (before it was "elegant" night) there was a Captain's Party or Captain's Celebration in the main lounge for the entire ship, including free drinks (beer, wine and watered down cocktails from tray service) and hors d'oeuvres. There were actually two separate parties (one for early MDR seating and one for late MDR seating--this was before YTD).  To cut costs, Carnival changed this to (a) a Captain''s Toast on the Promenade(?) deck with $1 off drinks and (b) the Fun Farewell party (free drinks and hors d'oeuvres) on the last full day of the cruise.

The Fun Farewell party was planned to be a failure so they could eventually cut it.  It was advertised in the Fun Times (actually Capers at the time, I believe) at the beginning of the cruise and the only other mention of it was a single line in the Fun Times activity schedule on the day of.  I had a close friend on the Cruise Director's staff at the time, and he confirmed they were not allowed to advertise the party beyond that.  The party wasn't heavily attended because it wasn't well publicized or people were busy packing on the last day, so Carnival cut it with the excuse it wasn't popular or well attended.

The Captain''s Toast originally had $1 off drinks at Promenade deck bars for a specific time before and after the toast.  I believe that's now been cut to $1 off a specific drink (maybe champagne or bellinis).

    2. There used to be a past guest party with free drinks and hors d'oeuvres for everyone who had cruised Carnival before.  When this got too big (or likely more expensive than Carnival wanted to spend), Red cards got cut and it became the Gold/Plat/Diamond Party.  All past guests got a free bottle of water in their cabin as a consolation to Red cards.

Carnival then cut it down to the Plat/Diamond party, with Golds getting a coupon for a free "appreciation" drink after 5 pm on the last full day of the cruise.

And that's the story of how two free parties with free drinks and hors d'oeuvres got cut down to what you see today.

We are platinum and have no desire to waste our time trying to get free drinks and food.  The food is in the buffet, and we have the beverage package.  Sitting packed in with a bunch of strangers all vying for a free drink does not seem like a good use of time.   Thanks for the explanation 🙂

There definitely is, we just booked Sept Magic cruise and it was listed.

not sure where it is, i'm sure folks will help out shortly.  I've only seen one seafood shack on CCL and it was in a weird spot, up a stairwell from part of the buffet seating area if i remember correctly.

We are going in Sept as well!  Only 101 more days for me!

  4. Thank you so much.  I saw that the Seafood Shack was listed in the website, but not on the deck plan.  Now I understand they replaced Tandoor with the Seafood Shack.  That makes me SO happy.   Not a fan of Indian food at all, and my husband is allergic to shellfish, so we don't eat it at home.  Can not wait for the friend clams and friend shrimp.  I think the prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes are good.   So excited!!

  5. We cruised on the Vista last October. My husband hated it. I thought it was ok. Our biggest complaint was the bars. The service was terrible. There were times we sat at a bar for more than 15 minutes without getting served, and there are barely any bar servers walking around on the deck. Personally, we think that is because so many people have the drink package now. They don't want to hurry up and serve us. It was the same regardless of the bar we were at, but he lobby bar and the sports bar and the main dining room were the worst. Getting aadribk at dinner was nearly impossible. We started bringing then in with us. Also, the wait staff in the main dining room was terrible. The only saving grace was that we saw a waiter we knew from another ship and he took over our table personally. Ollie made the trip great! Personally, we love the Sunshine the best and will be cruising on her in Sept.

  6. In my case we can't redeem our points for flights. My husband and I are going distance, so he flys here every Friday, and back every mon. We've just earned companion status, meaning I fly free with him anywhere he flys for the rest of this year and all of next year. We fly somewhere about once or twice a month for the weekend. However, in order for him to keep companion status for 2019, he has to fly 100 OW flights, paid. We've missed it for the last three years because he was using points on his flights, and reward flights don't count. So I would rather put those points towards cruises, and fly anywhere he can go for free! Im flying to Napa free.($400), DC ($200), SAN ANTONIO ($300) Orlando ($190), Tampa ($145) and Boston ($154), and that's all just through the end of this year. Plus now I have $1000 towards my next CRUISE after this. Oh, and I still have delta points to redeem for a flight!

  7. For me it just isn't worth using my miles to get the Carnival Gift Card. It works out to about 10 cents per SW mile. Whereas using the miles for travel is like 17 cents per mile. When you have a family of 6, that's a lot of flying.

Example: Just used about 46,000 miles for round trip to San Juan. It would have cost around $750 for airfare. Those 46000 miles would have gotten me almost $500 Carnival Cards.

  9. Same here....before we cruised on Pride last month, previous cruise was on Vista with the $10 min and $2 chips...we also were like...forget that....was glad when we cruised Pride last month they still had the $5 min. One of the dealers at the roulette table was telling us the higher minimums are common now on the "larger" Carnival ships......
Well, I guess I will end up $1000 richer at the end of this cruise! LOL
