The reason it's so expensive is probably because the Buccaneer is the nicest resort on the island, is at least a 30 minute drive from the pier and their beaches are beautiful.  Actually interested that they offer an excursion through Royal Caribbean.

If you are looking for a nice day at the beach and don't care if you see more of the island than just F'sted, you might look into booking a day pass at Sandcastle on the Beach.  I believe they charge $40 on cruise ship days and that gives you a chaise lounge, a shared umbrella and access to their pool, clean restrooms and the beach.  They usually have a beach server who will get your drinks and their lunches are nice.  You can walk there from the pier.

any idea of how far the walk is?

  2. I dont fly often but the hurricane will end up here with some wind etc. if we check our bags and flight gets cancelled we can still drive to florida.

is there a way to get our checked bag back from them right there at the airport??

  3. ok we have always lived in smaller towns so not used to busses or ferrys etc.

I am very overwhelmed with the thought of doing busses etc. I would like to go shopping in hamilton and go to st georges to the caves and maybe the bay for a swim. we are docked at the other end and have an over night there.

can someone tell me exactly how to do this? bus numbers to take, how to find out what to take and times they leave etc

  4. If we take ferry from dockyard ship area to st george what is the cheapest or easiest way to get to the crystal caves? anyone know the taxi cost? (not a big fan of buses)

the only tour I can find does hamilton first then 2 hr beach trip then to caves. why would I want to swim then go to caves? makes no sense so if we try to do this on our own can we.

MIND you we are FAR country folks and do NOT ride buses or even have taxis here so that is all daunting

I’ve used Bermuda Byways island tour twice now.  Heidi is excellent tour guide and a 6th generation Bermudian.

I can not find a website or any information about them

Forgot to mention. Tobacco Bay from ferry terminal is about a mile walk, more or less. About 20 minutes. Uphill. ( Downhill on return!) If not into walking, shuttle/ taxi service available in King's Square.

Used to be $7.00 per carload, not sure of pricing today.

WHICH ferry are you referring too?

Wow!  Is that Chilkoot?  Hopefully once a few ships have been in, they'll get it figured out.

I'm actually curious if they will allow the ship excursion buses to pull up to load on the aft part of the dock with the shuttle buses.  It would certainly save some time.

if you are referring to me its alaskashoreexcursions.com and they said they have no idea what is happening with the ships and docking. just try to get off early which is hard with 5,000 other people

We are in the same situation as you on this cruise! We've booked Chilkoot Charters tour and are worried about getting off the ship in time!

Seems like we'll hear more information the first week of May when more ships are in port and using the Railway Dock to see what is happening.... Not sure what Royal's protocol would be in terms to letting non-royal based excursions off early as we'd have to be off asap too.

we also are in that situation and suppose to be at train station by 745. I keep wondering if I should rebook through the ship but I wanted the all day excursion

The independent excursion companies depend on cruise ship passengers to make a living.  Call them and tell them the situation.  I'm sure they will be working with their guests to get them out on their tours.  After being shut down for Covid and now with the docking issues, they need your business to stay in business!

I did call them and they know nothing more then everyone on here. they said when it gets closer they will be able to refund or do what is needed. skagway is my primary reason to want to see alaska. the railway and inside tour on way back. sounds like we wont know till real close which stinks

If you check the schedules to see how many ships are expected on the day you plan to be there and the berth assignment, you may know if the odds are in your favour.

If there are three or fewer ships you may feel better about it. (My wife and I are taking a cruise on the Queen Elizabeth and the rail excursion is the only excursion we have booked, so I am following the situation closely.)

If your ship is assigned to the Broadway or Ore docks that is good. If your ship is assigned to  "Railroad Dock Aft" that is almost as re-assuring. It is planned to take passengers by shuttle bus to/from the ship at that berth. If that is not possible, tendering is a possibility. If your ship is assigned to "Railroad Dock forward" I would be worried.

Of course, berth assignments can change. But we have done three cruises to Alaska in the past seven years and the information given in the aforementioned site has been accurate for all ports.

says RRA. assume that is aft?

Any ship can miss Skagway due to winds. If the only thing you want to see is Skagway, fly into Vancouver and drive up to Skagway.

Ok I am the orginal poster and we are not driving or flying anywhere. we are taking a big ship 5000 people and I worry it wont dock there due to landslide. I dont want to cruise if we dont get to the train ride etc. that is why I asked

I've looked at the ship and tour operator excursions and they were almost double what the price is vs buying tickets on your own. However, I just saw something I hadn't seen before on the railway's website. Here it is.

         CRUISE SHIP

For passengers arriving via cruise ship, this tour is available from your ship’s Shore Excursion Department. By booking through the cruise line, you will be able to take advantage of the dockside service and board the train on the pier alongside your ship. Contact your cruise line’s Shore Excursion Department for more details.

Does this mean you can't book this independently? If so, it implies that you can't book it through a tour company as well. Or, does this merely mean it will be a little more effort once you get there to get to the train station to board?

I booked through Alaska shore excursions and got the all day up on train back by van. they guarantee you will be back on ship on time or they pay for what you need to get to next port. they told me they have never had an issue in all the years they have been doing it. WAYYYYYYYYYYY cheaper than the cruise ships and its all day

They are lined up in the transportation staging area between the two ship berths. As soon as it is filled it leaves and they start filling the next one. My experiences have been between 0 and 10 minutes. They shuttle back and forth to Horseshoe all day and it works the same for the return. They mostly take cash but there are a few drivers that take credit cards.

what if you want to go to warwick? do the buses drop off there?
