  1. A huge thank you for all the responses!  Vineyard View, I especially appreciate your research and information from Bluewater Safaris. Like you, we’re not sure what we will do yet. Booking independently online with a 5:00 return is cutting it too close for comfort with a 6:00 sail away.  Hopefully we can get more information about the number of people booked for the Viking excursion when we get on board...

  2. Lunch on board is what I understood from the excursion description as well.  Would prefer the BBQ on Nevis, too. So much depends on the number of people on the catamaran. Would still like to hear from people that took the Viking excursion!  We plan to ask some questions once we’re on board the Viking ship, then decide if this is the excursion we want in St. Kitts.

  3. I posted this same question on the St Kitts port forum today and got the following reply:

All of the catamaran sails over to Nevis use either Blue Water Safari or Leeward Islands for the excursion. You can not book privately, only through the cruise line as per their agreements. Adult beverages are included.”

Thank you so much for the info!  This helps a lot with our decision!

  5. Our long awaited booking time for shore excursions opened just about an hour ago.  After reading this thread, we were dreading what we thought might be a frustrating long process.  We are in a DV cabin on a 15 day cruise. Thankfully, it took us about 10 minutes to book everything we were hoping for, all at our first choice times. Granted, all 9 of our choices were for included excursions, as we prefer to do our own planning and exploring the rest of the time in port. So if paid excursions are the real problem, please disregard my comments. Just a couple tips that may help future cruisers:  My husband and I were both online simultaneously, one on the computer, the other on an iPad. We each selected different excursion choices to book. Divide and conquer!  We did have several instances of “spinning and spinning” but discovered it helped to refresh the page. For a couple of our choices, after refreshing, the choice came up as successfully booked.  Sooo, perhaps we were just lucky, or more hopefully, Viking has heard, listened, and worked to solve the problem!

We are booked for one night pre-cruise at the Wakeup Bernstorffsgade in May.  Price was right, and it looks to be a good location. Is that the one you refer to in your post?  We think it just opened this fall.  Is that correct?  Any reviews from those that have stayed there would be appreciated. Would also appreciate detailed directions for public transportation from airport to hotel, and also from hotel to cruise port.

Yes it opened in early november.

According to TripAdvisor they have a 3,5 rating, the same as the hotel on Carsten Niebuhrs gade.

The hotel on Borgergade gets 4 or 4,1 so that one is a little bit better.

The reviews seems to be okay, there is a few bad but it seems like they just had a bad experience.

Cabinn City, Wakeup (2 locations nearby but the one at Bernstoffsvej is the one closest to the downtown area) and Steel House is the 3 I would look at.

Just notice that the rooms at Cabinn are very small.

  8. We have purchase confirmation receipts and reservation #s for our Top Views tour of the Sagrada Familia that we booked yesterday for 8 people. Reviewing info on the website, it appears that individual tickets are required for admission, but we have not been emailed them as of +24 hours later. For those who have ordered their tickets via the Sagrada Familia website, what is your experience as to the process? Thanks!

Have you checked junk mail? Some of our confirmations for tix to Med. sites have gone there...

  9. Anyone have recent information about a free shuttle route available in Palermo that takes you around perimeter of major city sites? Called "Navette Gratuite," Centro Storico route. I saw an online announcement of the service dated April, 2016. Questions:

-Does it run year round, or seasonal?

-What is the pick up point closest to cruise port?

-Can you get off/ on at various places?

    Thanks for any info!

  10. Planning excursions for the September 18 sailing of the Riviera and wondering which ports are good to do on your own.We visit Palamos, Marseille, Monte Carlo,Livorno, Palermo, Kotor, Dubrovnik and Venice. Also any recommendations of good Oceania excursions.

We will be on the September 18 sailing on the Riviera with you! I have been researching extensively. It seems overwhelming, as this is our first trip to Europe. We fly into Barcelona two days before the cruise, and will stay an extra night in Venice at the end. We plan to explore both of those ports on our own. We will also do Dubrovnik, Palamos, and Palermo on our own.

I discovered (with the help of many experienced Cruise Critic individuals) that most all of the ports for this itinerary have good bus and train options to go beyond the cities on your own. It just takes lots of research and planning. I also recommend Rick Steves "Mediterranean Cruise Ports" guide, Toms port guides, etc. mentioned in earlier posts as great places to start.

That being said, we have opted for private small group tours in Marseille, Livorno, Civitaveccia, Kotor, and Monte Carlo. We wanted to get outside those cities to see more, but we're not brave enough to do everything on our own (yet, haha!) So we split the ports in half - five tours and five going it on our own.

Check out the roll call for our sailing. That's how we connected with others on our sailing to book our group excursions. Much cheaper than the Oceania tours.

    Looking forward to meeting you!

Another thing to consider would be to purchase a 24hr vaporetto pass during your visit -- If you think you'll be using the vaporetto more than twice to/from your hotel/P. Roma.

Yes, that's the plan. Since our ship overnights in Venice, we'll actually get the 48 hour pass. Thanks for the info!

  12. Another option is to take the People Mover to Piazzale Roma and leave two suitcases in the luggage deposit just next to the PM. Then you can handle one piece of luggage and since you have to get back to Piazzale Roma to take the bus to Marco Polo airport, you pick up you suitcases and are ready to go.

Thanks for this recommendation. This might make the most sense for us. Easy to live out of a carry-on for one night!

  13. Venice is never really "easy" with luggage, but what I would do in your situation is:

    1. Get off the ship and claim your luggage.

    2. Take the People Mover from the port to Piazzale Roma.

    3. At Piazzale Roma take the #1 Vaporetto, which will make a stop at your San Silvestro pier.

    4. Obtain directions from your B&B regarding how to reach them from the vaporetto pier.

This assumes you can manage your luggage well enough to get it on and off the vaporetto. Usually there is a ramp, but you may have to lift it up slightly, and/or be able to stow it on the luggage rack on the vaporetto.

You can look at a map of the vaporetto routes at the link below. The black line is the #1.

To get to the airport, you will reverse the process, taking the vaporetto back to Piazzale Roma. Here you can pick up one of the express buses to the airport. More info on this service here:

Thanks for the step by step plan! Just what we need!

  14. I think you mean the Rialto 1082 B&B, not 1092. It's 50 meters from the vaporetto dock in Calle del Luganegher, Campo San Silvestro. As I recall, there aren't any bridges to cross between the San Silvestro stop and the hotel, and there are some reasonably good restaurants nearby on Riva del Vin on the Grand Canal. My favorite near you is Carampane (ask at the desk when you check in for recommendations).

You're right! It is Rialto 1082. Typo on my part! Their map doesn't show any bridges, so counting on that. Thanks for the restaurant info!

  15. DH and I have never been to Venice, and are feeling nervous about how to get from the cruise ship to our B & B, then to the airport for departure in September. We disembark from Oceania Riviera after an overnight in Venice on board, and are staying at the Rialto 1092 for one night post cruise. All we know is that it is located very close to the San Silvestro vaporetto stop. What is the best (and most economical) way to get there with possibly 3 pieces of luggage? Also, what's the best (and most economical) way to the airport the next day for a 1:00 PM flight? Thanks in advance to all you Venice experts out there!
