  1. The ferry boats to both Lokrum and Cavtat only depart from the harbor in the old town. There is nothing from the Gruz Harbor and they only begin once our weather has become better. April can be known for wind and rain and has had nice spring temperatures but not warm enough to swim yet. When in April do you expect to be visiting our area? Most of the town begins to open just after Easter Sunday, which next year happens to be 01 April, again weather depending.

  2. If you are inside the old town the closest bus stop for Cavtat is in front of the cable car entrance. The boats will be running, weather permitting, from the old port. All closest to the Ploce entrance, which is the point to get off the wall. I do hop our weather is still good, which is likely, but our winds can happen at any time. Be prepared and expect the best. Enjoy your time here.

  3. Can you recommend a few that you think are really good and possibly what street they are on?

Sorry but since I am a local resident the rules of cruise critic do not permit me to recommend any specific restaurants. That being said I will state that you will find many of the menus very similar, prices almost the same and the nicer the view, the more food costs.

  4. The entrance fee for the wall is 150 Kuna, per person. You can pay with credit or debit card, no problem and NO foreign currency. As for lunch, depends on the restaurant, most of them will accept credit cards. we do have some small sandwich shops, they of course do not take credit cards. A pizza will run from 60 to 120 Kuna, depending on size and ingredients. A sandwich can run from 40 to 100 Kuna, again depends on what you choose to add. Most restaurants will have a menu with prices available for viewing. Stay off the main promenade when picking a place to eat, you will find better meals and deals on the side streets.

  5. There are poor drivers all over the world, we have our fair share. Dubrovnik is not a village, a very large town or small city. Our tours drivers are some of the best, they drive the roads daily and often many times a day. There is no need to be concerned about your excursion at all.

  6. Been living here in the Dubrovnik area for the past 10 years. I find it to be a good choice for me, some may not. Very low crime rate, good weather and a clean and safe sea for swimming, note that our fresh seafood is some of the best in Europe. I can afford to live nicely here, if I returned to the USA I would be probably be homeless. Not by choice but by my limited income. Other than poor drivers here, I love it.

  7. There is not exit as Buza, it is just a hole in the wall to enter and exit the old town. There are entrances/exits at Pile gate, which is normally the beginning of a counter clockwise walk. The first exit is at Sveti Ivan (Saint John), but if you exit there you will miss the old port. Next is the Ploce (plo-cha) exit, which is the half way point and that is the exit you should take. It is the closest to the Ploce gate exit of old town, which is the closest to the cable car. Exit Ploce, turn left and walk along the wall until you reach a small road to the left. The fire department is on one corner, parking lot is on the other. Walk up the small road, just a few meters and follow the road to the right to the cable car entrance just a few meters ahead. Enjoy and I do hope for good weather, however don't count on it.

  8. Those who are asking you are not aware of how a credit card is charged. During high season we have a very large group of workers here from other countries. Many of these countries use the Euro, but I guarantee any charge charged in Croatia, the bill will be in Croatian Kuna.

Do keep in mind that I have been a visitor to Croatia since 1971, only became a resident 9 years ago. Although I have lived here for so many years, the locals still consider me the American visitor. It does not matter how long I live here, I will always be the American visitor. Yes I do see the coin from both sides.

  9. I have read on here that people took a 1 hr panoramic tour from port to the hill where the cable car goes, then back down into the old town.

Do you negotiate a price with the driver or do they all offer this for the same price.

Any advice/tips on this option would be much appreciated as it does seem a good option to skip the cable car queue.

Sorry we often go off on subjects here. You will find a line up of taxis waiting at the dock, normally guests just get into the next waiting in line. Most of the taxi drivers do have about the same prices for a drive tour, depends on the length of time you desire. Tell the driver you want a one hour tour to the top of Mt. Srd (surge) and a return to one of the entrances to the old town. There is not always a cable car queue, but if it is high season it is possible to wait over an hour. Take the taxi, enjoy the view it is a wonderful photo opportunity and do please enjoy my fabulous retirement home.

  10. All credit card transactions will be billed in Croatian Kuna, it is the legal currency of the country. Euros are quoted due to the fact it makes it easier for the majority of European guests to understand. If you pay with Euros, any change will be returned in Kuna. Keep in mind that many guests only visit a few shops and yes some will accept Euros, others will not. They will ALL accept Croatian Kuna.

  11. Cavtat and Ston are in opposite directions. Since I live in Cavtat, I am slightly biased and do believe we have more to offer. You can pick up Libertas #10 at the Gruz harbor where most of the ships dock. Verify with your cruise line this is your dock area. The bus fare is 25 Croatian Kuna, cash only no foreign currency nor credit cards. Our Croatian cuisine is not all sea food, although it is very fresh and therefore tastes better than store bought fish. Try a local dish called Civapcici, small veal, beef and or pork sausages, which are fabulous. Never met a person who did not like this dish, it is a Bosnian food and it is served is most of our restaurants, but do check first.

Ston is interesting with the wall and just generally the area. You may want to visit before or after lunch or perhaps enjoy one of the many pasta dishes which will be on the menu. A lovely town to visit, do not miss the salt pans and enjoy your time here.

  12. We're in port for an overnight and this is our second visit, so we are looking for something different, having done the cable car, and enjoyed exploring the old town and wall previously.

Was thinking about a visit to Cavtat (by boat/bus) but would welcome any suggestions for a easy scenic day trip .... and also something worthwhile to do at night - am sure the old town will be special by moonlight.

You can take Libertas #10 from the Gruz Harbor directly to Cavtat. Bus cost is 25 Kuna per person, no foreign currency. Take the small boat back to the old town, a 45 minute ride which will bring you back to the old port. Enjoy the evening in the old town.

  13. When you contact a car rental firm here, you can request they deliver your car to the Gruz Harbor. You do not need to visit the office to rent a car. However, that being said, there is an office in our Ploce area, but no parking and not easy to find. They also will bring the car from the holding areas to you there. There are no offices inside the old town.
