  1. CCL MDR was okay. DCL MDR was not as good IMO. I was wondering if the specialty restaurant were miles above the MDR. It doesn't sound like they are.

Well, consider the sources: The people commenting on the specialty restaurants are the same ones saying the MDR is good.

I believe the specialties are much better than the MDR. IMO Cagney's is miles above them. But, if you are OK eating a week of DCL or CCL, then you'll be fine eating a week of NCL.

  2. Regarding the MDR and the question do you need to go to specialty restaurants - what did you do on Carnival? The MDR food is about the same on CCL and NCL. We don't think it's as good as others on these boards state, so, we tend to hit specialty restaurants a few times in a week-long cruise. If you think Carnival food is good and you have no problem eating it for a week, then you will be happy eating in the MDR and no specialty restaurants needed.

(and we always brought our daughter on all trips. Wouldn't have it any other way. We just took her on Bliss 2 weeks ago, for college graduation trip. I fear that may be the last trip we do together for a long time as she enters the career world. Cherish every single moment of these trips, the time goes by really fast.)

  3. No, its not a technical issue, and he never said it was.

He said it was a safety issue and it's really not. It's a cheap way of being safe.

Could the ship install GFCI's instead of the low current "razor" outlets in the baths? Sure, and you would have probably a hundred of them "ghost" tripping every single day, due to the ship's floating ground and ground faults around the ship that have nothing to do with the circuit the GFCI outlet is on. It's not a "money" thing, it is a "practical" thing.
My understanding is there are ways to deal with that as well, but they cost money.

I stand by what I said, it's a money thing.

  4. That’s safety.
Not correct. If it was safety, then every bathroom built in the last 20+ years is unsafe. It's about cost and the cheapest way to build a bathroom. That's cheapness.

It is exact set up that any reasonable person would expect.
So those who expect to be able to use a blow dryer, straightener, etc in a bathroom are unreasonable? I don't appreciate being called unreasonable.
  5. Someone reported that their Bliss Haven bathroom had NO electrical outlets. Is this true? I’ve never stayed in a hotel anywhere no matter how cheap that didn’t provide a bathroom outlet.
Our non-Haven bathroom on the Bliss had an outlet up by the light. hard to see but it was there. Wouldn't surprise me if someone missed it and thought there was no outlet.
  6. We love the Dawn, but will mainly be on the larger ships with all the other choices of things to do. Love the shows and water-slides. Its more of a resort feel on the larger ships. Also more food choices although most are extra $$$.

This matches our feelings almost exactly. We really, really liked the Dawn. But we also really liked the "-Away" class and most recently the Bliss. 2 very different experiences. I say try the big ship, I really doubt that you will have a bad time.

  7. On the June 2nd cruise, we did use the messaging and thought it worked fine for DW and I. $9.99 per person.

There was a problem, however. The 3rd person in our room (DD) couldn't send/receive messages. She went to the support desk and they acknowledged it was a bug in their software related to the 3rd/4th persons in a room. Without asking, they credited us back the $9.99 each but left it enabled for DW and I. Then later in the week, it magically started working for DD too.

We use the ap mostly for messaging. We communicate on land via messaging, a lot, and we tend to go separate ways on the ship so it's useful and natural for us on ships. I would have no qualms about paying the $9.99 in the future and recommending it to anyone who has the need.

The free part of the ap wasn't bad. I didn't notice problems with the schedule, however, the actual user interface is a bit funky - it took a while to figure out why I wasn't seeing everything in a given day. The schedule also doesn't include the next day's schedule until evening. I didn't see any problem when reviewing my bill. No doubt there is a lot of room for improvement in the ap, but, I found it to be useful.

It is a little frustrating that these apps are built better - they could be so beneficial and the software and infrastructure isn't difficult to implement. I hope they keep working on it.

  8. What I read here is that NCL did great, but the people that lease and run the casino did not give away as much to OP as he felt he was entitled. When did we become entitled?

I don't think it's entitled as much as it is conditioned. The casinos, with their effort to lure and retain the best gamblers, have conditioned those gamblers to expect perks. I am not a gambler, but, I suspect the perks are a very important part of the reason high rollers are there.

  9. 3) The Go Kart track is a sham you have to pay $9.99 a person to ride once.

    3) They shouldn’t charge anyone paying thousands for a cruise $9.99 for go kart rides.

Nor should they charge for a soda. Or a beer. Or a bottle of wine. Or a decent steak. Or classes in the fitness center. Or a massage. Shall I go on?

I've seen a lot of complaints on this forum, but that has to be one of the most ridiculous. By the way, it's not a "go kart ride". You might want to try it before you belittle it.

  10. Great to know they made it in one week then not the next. For anyone who has been on the tour- are there bench seats or individual seats? I’m wondering if my 10 year old can lay down on the way back?

I suppose it depends on the exact crusie line and excursion, however I think Alen Marine runs most if not all of them and they use boats like you see pictured in reply #31 above.

For the Allen Marine ships, while the seats are individual, I think he'd be able to lay down, depends on how fussy he is.

If you are doing this with NCL, there is no "trip back" as NCL meets you down by the glacier (OK, maybe 10 minutes to get from the glaciers back to where the ship will be)

  11. Interesting observations. On the Jun 2 sailing, I believe we made our reservations for Friday morning on Wednesday.

I think I mentioned this elsewhere, but what I saw on June 2 cruise was a very, very inefficient operation. If the track capacity is 10 cars (I believe it is), I'd guess I was seeing on average 5-6 cars on the track. Sometimes as few as 1 car on the track. Also, while one set of cars is racing, the 2nd set should be getting ready so they can launch as soon as the previous group is all back in the pits. For my group, we sat a long time after the other group was already in.

Efficiency - they need to improve it.

  12. We will be traveling on Bliss in July trying to start a packing list, no idea what to bring will be going to Seattle for 3 days then cruise. What is necessary to bring and what did you forget that you wish you had packed. Do people dress up in evening or is it too cold.

Thanks in advance for any and all advise

Might be better to look for threads on Alaska packing - I'm sure there are others, or create your own new thread.

I found this cruise to be the least formal of any I've been on. Seemed like very few were getting dressed up.

The tough part is outdoor wear, you have to plan on layers. We were doing a small boat whale watch and the Tracy Arm excursion, so, knew we'd be outside on the water for extended periods. We had base layers, fleeces and water proof shells, hats and gloves.
