Update, all passengers are aboard.  We were supposed to leave an hour ago...  no further news from the captain

I've been searching the boards trying to find out if everyone made it back on board.  We just returned yesterday from 9 days in Cozumel.  There were several more ships in later in the week because of altered schedules.  On Friday the Breakaway was docked at Punta Langosta in town. We were having dinner on the square Friday evening and some officers from the ship came through asking if anyone was from the ship.  There were still two groups of passengers and two crew members that were not back on board.  They said that on Friday morning passengers were told that they would be in Cozumel until Sunday, but the decision had been made to go ahead and try to get into Miami ahead of the storm to offload the current passengers and pick up those for the next sailing.  They were trying to get everyone back on board.  They said they could leave as late as 4am and make it back to Miami, but the ship was sitting there burning fuel so they wanted to go ahead and pull out.  It was about 9pm at that time.  We took the officers to several bars in the area that Americans/cruisers like to visit but didn't find them.  The concern was that they had gone over to Playa Del Carmin on the ferry, since they thought they had two nights to kill.  The officer said that if they are not back on board when the capitan decides to sail, that they would go into their rooms, pack all of their things and leave them with the port agent, who would then help them get home.  I was frank with the guy and told him if I had been told I had two nights to kill, and then the ship sailed early without me, I would be all kinds of pi$$ed off.  What if those parties don't have passports? If they can't fly home will they wait until another NCL ship can pick them up?  Would NCL put them up in Cozumel?  I also wondered how many passengers they would have for the next sailing, as people from Florida may want to stay home with their families during a storm, and people coming into Miami may have a difficult time getting in, or may be hesitant to fly into the potential path of a storm.  Anyway, I'm glad that everyone made it back on board before the ship sailed.  Hindsite being what it is, they are probaby wishing the ship had stayed in Cozumel.  I hope everyone is able to enjoy the extra time on board and stress levels don't rise too much.

Right above your post. They rent gear for local.

That posts seems to be referring to snorkel gear for surface snorkeling.  A lot of places that rent snorkel equipment don't rent dive equipment also.

  3. Contact Crecensio Lopez with Black Hat Cozumel.  You can message him through Facebook.  We have used him several times for private tours and have always been very pleased.  He will tailor the day to your interests.

  4. We are on the Liberty on May 12th.  The Key has been sold out for our sailing for weeks.  As soon as I learned of it, I went to book it and it was already showing as unavailable.  There was a blurb that said check onboard.  Even though it was sold out, it was showing a price of $19.99 per person per day.  This morning when I did my daily check to see if it was available, the check on board blurb was gone but it still wouldn't allow me to add it to the cart.  I called and they said it was sold out. Later I looked again and the price now says $31.99!!  That's a little too much, even it it was available.

  5. We go often.  It's a beautiful beach with decent snorkeling.  Waiters bring your drinks and food to your seats under the palapas, or there are a few restaurants.  There is a tour around the dolphin/manatee pens that is free.  It's fun and they even take your picture petting one of the dolphins.  You pay for the picture if you want it of course.  We have done the zipline and found it to be very safe and fun.  The sea lion show is also a lot of fun.  The pool has a swim up bar. And their is a small little cove for the little ones to play in.  And the massages in the open air massage station overlooking the lagoon are wonderful.  We always get off the ship as soon as we can and take a taxi to the park.  Several times we've been the first ones there and have our choice of palapas.  We have usually finished our first round of snorkeling before the cruiseship excursions start arriving.  Even when there are many ships in port, ith park has never seemed crowded.  We've been to Cozumel many times on cruises and land vacations anc Chankanaab is one of our favorite places to go.  You can usually find coupons on their website for $2 off regular admission.  If you want to do the zipline, book it in advance to guarantee a time and I believe that will include your park admittance.

    Have fun!

I deiced to pay for a Jr suite upgrade to ensure double cruise points. I just couldn't stand ending this cruise 1 point away from leveling up...

But I want to bid on a higher suite. Only problem is the biding system still has us in a balcony. so, the bidding upgrades are way too high since I just paid all that extra $$$... I hope they update the bid system in the next week... Otherwise my plan sort of back fired.

we sail may 12th so maybe there is still time.

According the FAQs for the Royal Up program, you only get the points you would have gotten for your original cabin.  I was going to bid in an effort to get double points too, until I read that.

  7. Liberty is our favorite ship of the ones we have sailed on. We've sailed on her twice out of Galveston and have another cruise booked on her for next May. We also like Lighthouse Parking. EZCruise is good too, but Lighthouse has covered parking and their shuttles seem to be more frequent.

  8. We was in St Martin last week off the Oasis of the Seas, and had decided to just hit the beach. It was so crowded, and so hot, that we changed our minds and started out on foot to explore. I started to chat with a taxi driver, just hello, she didn't jump into my face to provide a tour. Anyway, I approached this woman about a trip to Marigot and Orient Beach. She was wonderful as a driver and a tour guide! She gave us a wonderful tour around the island, both sides, showing us the typical tourist spots, and her own favorite spots. Her fee was quite reasonable, and she was very friendly and knowledgeable. I know it was only 1 day, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her, and use her again. Her contact info: Miss Margaret, 1 (721)523-0749.

Can I ask how long your tour was and what she charged? Thanks.

  9. Thank you for posting this review. Just to clarify, the picture of the loungers in the sun, those are on an area of the beach restricted to bungalow guests? The RC site says "Guests should note this area is not private." Does that mean while the beach is not private, that area is restricted? We want some shade, but we want to be able to get some sun also.

    Thanks!

  10. Harry,

I finished your trip report. It was wonderful! I feel like you are a kindred spirit in your planning details. I too am an Excel lover for vacation planning. My spreadsheet evolves over time. At first it will list the days/locations and activity options and estimated costs. That will be sent to everyone traveling with us and then in group email discussions we will decide what we are going to do. Actually I usually say, "This is what husband and I are going to do. We would love for you to join us, or here or some other options." And then everyone joins us because I make it easy by doing all the planning. Once activities are decided on the other options are deleted from the spreadsheet. As the trip gets closer I will add columns for things to pack for that day, one column for clothing and one for other items. For land trips I will also add in restaurants. I've also done trip planning in Word with a separate page for each day. The information is at the top of the page, then I can take the pages and jot notes each day to use if I want to do a trip report or scrap book. I also use multi-pocket folders with pockets for each day of the vacation and all confirmations/information for each day in that pocket. Then I can put Cruise Compass, receipts etc in that day's pocket also.

All that planning and organizing can seem anal, but I think it makes the actual trip SO much easier and less stressful. And with a plan you are able to get so much more out of your days. I cringe when I see those people getting off the ship with no idea what they are going to do that day. You spent that much money to go a cruise and you don't even know what your daily options are?! Shudder! I can't take vacation every week. I have to maximize my time and money.

We are also kindred in that we traveled a lot with our son when he was growing up. Now those trips are some of our fondest memories. Even the occasional hiccups are looked back on fondly now, like when he was 10 and got mad in WDW's Hall of Presidents because we were "trying to make him learn something on vacation"! The lesson that day was to not over plan the day and try to make an exhausted child do something he probably wouldn't have been crazy about any time. Our son is grown now but he still travels quite a bit with us, and to give your cheapo side something to look forward to - now he pays his own way! It's fabulous!

I want to say one more thing - I so appreciate your encouragement of others to add their own photos and opinions and to ask questions. You are so right, there are no dumb questions. If you are wondering about something, chances are someone else is too. Ask! Thank you for encouraging others to participate in your trip report. And thank you for doing the trip report, and for including information/photos from your other trips. I hope you have many more wonderful (and well planned!) trips in the future.

  11. del Morro requires a fair degree of agility. There are steep stairs so it is not really suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties. Great views of the harbor entrance.

San Cristobal has ramps, some are a bit steep. Wonderful views of the old city and port as well as the Atlantic. Lots of great picture opportunities. Also some educational exhibits for the history buffs. Some guns and a pile of cannonballs that will gladden the heart of any young adventurer.

Thanks. We are all adults in reasonable shape, so I don't think the stairs will be that big of an issue (hopefully!). And 5 of our party of 6 are from Texas so we should be acclimated to the heat. Maybe my husband and I will do both before everyone else arrives and then take the entire party to the most suitable one on Saturday morning.

  12. I had the walking route more or less mapped out in my head prior to leaving home. I also download the step by step walking map of OSJ in case we got lost but I never needed that. Just used Google map from my phone as my phone is now turned back on given we are back in US cell phone coverage area.

Harry, I just discovered your report today and now I've spent the entire afternoon reading it. I've made it to San Juan! We are selling the Freedom out of SJ in August and will visit several of the ports that you visited on this trip. Then in February we are sailing on the Independence out of FL and Labadee is one our stops. So your report has been a wealth of information. Can you tell me about the step-by-step walking map of OSJ that you downloaded? We are going to be in SJ for 2 days pre-cruise and 1-day post cruise and want to do a lot of exploring.

Just want to tell you that I love your style, your humor, your photos...everything. I'm just afraid I'm not going to get much done until I finish reading this report. Oh well! Thanks for taking the time to share your trip. Oh, and your family is beautiful!

Any questions, please let me know...

Thank you for posting your review and the photos. We have a tour scheduled with Ellis on September 1 and are very much looking forward to it. I have a couple of questions re: your full vacation photo set. Where were the zipline photos and the Amber Museum photos taken? Thanks!

  14. We booked Scenic Tours Antigua and Shawn was our guide. He was very informative and we had a good day.

He showed us a lot of the island with stops at Shirley Heights to view the beautiful water and homes. We went to Nelson's Dockyard and had plenty of time to explore. Shawn recommended the bakery and the apple turnover was scrumptious.

At the end of the day we went to Jolly Beach and rented 2 beach loungers and an umbrella for $20. The water was perfect and it was great way to end our day.

Thanks for sharing your experience. We have booked a private tour with them in August and are looking forward to it.

  15. I was in San Juan right after last year's Hurricane in December 2017. I just followed a self guided walking tour guide and walked around in old San Juan and went to one of the forts. The trolley car was not even running yet. Our time was from 8AM to 2PM so time was tight. It was sunny outside and some Viking tour groups were walking along the same path. Friendly people. Some stores were already opened. Some places were empty and closed. The old town was on cobber stone and colorful building. Not the newest modern style, but still pleasant to look at.

Later one of my client's family also lives in San Juan and some photos of private house were showed to me then I realized how bad the situation was and are for the residents. The whole 1st floor were in water and everything were covered by mug. However, they already cleaned out the house and are working on rebuild.

Enjoy your stay in San Juan.

Would you share the name of the self guided walking tour that you used. We would like to do something similar. Thanks.
