  1. I never doubted that the cruiseline would have rubber mats: it is the pre or post hotel stays that I would want to have a mat.

There had been some posts about lengthy waits for hotel rooms. The maids are not always available for a quick request re extra items or that the check in time is past their "duty" hours.

A tired, anxious traveler may not be willing to wait for room service to bring a mat. A relaxing bath/shower would be very tempting and slippery without a mat.

Linda VH: Thanks for the placard tip. We generally don't drive in foreign countries and hadn't thought about using our placard at the airports.

  2. A couple of other thoughts popped into my head:

Packing: try not to overpack, packing and unpacking takes time PLUS you have to keep track of your stuff. Of course, if grandfather springs for a category that includes a butler, the staff will work wonders for you.

Suitcase weight is also an issue. I was always worried about the carryons and on the look out for the suitcases while intransit. I would request wheelchair assistance for the ease of navigating an elderly person in the airport: less stress on their joints and extra help. l could count on Mom to clutch her carryon and mine would be nestled between her legs. I would push/pull our suitcases while she was wheeled.

A thin rubber mat for the shower/tub might be something to bring along.

A cane that has a fold up seat would be useful. Of course, in Europe, there are lots of local coffee shops to visit for a breather and enjoy the ambiance.

  3. no need

he all inclusive aspect of taking a Regent cruise covers alot, but not medical care, if needed.

I have escorted/roomed with my elderly Mom on land tours and on cruises. She is fairly outgoing and yet still needs a fair amount of catering to. She grasps the "big picture" and I am there to handle all the rest: bills, travel documents, wake up calls... The memories we share of our travels are priceless. Having me fuss makes her feel special and cared for.

Go with an open heart and make memories!

oops, didn't get back to editing my post per time limit:

A Regent cruise is all inclusive. Medical care and services are a seperate charge.

Pace yourselves: take some tours, eat in moderation, plan on downtime/naps and have some time away from one another.

    ....

Fussing over Mom doesn't stem the complaints and opinions of an 88 yo! Which is why I advise setting some time away from your relative while on the cruise: pool time, library, DVD viewing... refresh yourself in the spa!

  4. Happy that your grandfather wants to go on a cruise that interests him. I would strongly advise you to shorten your beach family vacay and go earlier with your elderly relative to Europe. He may need more recovery time per the air flight stressors. The fatigue post international travel can hit either you or him... catching a bug will make you feel worse. The all inclusive aspect of taking a Regent cruise covers alot, but not medical care, if needed.

  5. I am aware that it is time consuming to write up and post the detailed posts on your recent Oceania cruise... and other lenghty posts. Thank you. I also keep in mind that it is your opinion and there are many pros and cons. I am considering taking a Regent cruise, and may try again the Oceania ships. And definitely NOT their (O's) original ships.

Now to decide on an itinerary.

  6. A few years back, we cruised on the Crystal Harmony and Shimizu was one of the ports. -- Our ship is Japanese owned and the welcome we got was over the top. We enjoyed the performances, exhibitions and impromptu food stalls. -- Folks were on day tours to visit Mr. Fuji from this port.
