  1. Yup, just rchecked the prices now £6300 (about USD10,000?) for an entry level balcony room on the July 14 night Med cruise on the Constellation, £4900 on the Eclipse sailing AND no mention of any promotions.

And at this price you don't even get freshly squeezed Orange Juice!:D

Orange Juice won't make me leave but these prices will!

I'm with you. I wanted to take the Dalmatian Coast cruise out of Venice in August. Fat chance, the prices are ridiculous. I'll probably rent a car and do it the right way in a cooler season, but I am amazed at what people will pay. We like X, but it's not worth the cost on some cruises.

  2. Think about it...a passenger sneezes into their napkin, or blows their nose into their napkin (IMHO bad manners), and then proceeds to wave their napkin around...over and over again. It probably does spread some germs into the air.

It may be a cruising tradition, but it was time to retire that custom.

Retire the increasingly common custom of blowing one's nose in a napkin. What a disgusting thing to do. I feel especially sorry for the waiters when bussing the table.

  3. I agree with the above posts....but I dread the thought of any change at this time because it would likely be a cost reduction dressed in some marketing rhetoric. Just a friendly reminder that Change is not always positive......

As those of us in the USA have learned

  4. Price drops usually come right before and certainly right after final payment so you have plenty of time. :) TA large price drops always come after final payment, in my experience. Way too early for October price drops.

I have booked many last minute airfares and they had not changed. In fact, I often get great deals on air about 6 weeks from sail date, but do not recommend this approach unless you have a strong stomach. I am a procrastinator so don't mind waiting.

I don't even have to check; X never drops the price on cruises I'm interested in.

  5. While searching for a Concierge balcony for our upcoming December, 2015 cruise, we were surprised to find that most were sold out as of last month.

Is this usual or do you think it is due to the "get all 3 perks with Concierge cabins" promotion?

We found a big discrepancy in pricing for Concierge cabins for our cruise, but finally located a good deal for one with good OBC as well as the 3 Celebrity perks and location upgrade as a Captains Club member.

I guess people trying to become Elite go for the points in Concierge. That's what we did and that's the only reason to book Concierge, as far as I'm concerned.

  6. I didn't have the lobster on formal night on the Reflection in January but my husband did. It was so tough it was inedible. Because we live on the East coast of Canada we are used to cold water lobster and the ones on a ship are not even lobster to us.

  7. Are Celebrity's prices going up in a big way? I still find Celebrity very reasonably priced and a bargain compared to what I was paying 17 years ago. I realize that I'm not getting the same bargains that could be found during the recession but that is understandable. Maybe I'm not sensitive at this stage of my life to $100 to $200 price increase, as it will not impact my vacation budget.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong cruises, but for the ones I am tracking right now, the starting price is high and the changes always seem to be upward. Compared to several other lines, X appears to be quite a bit more expensive on the face of it. It can be difficult to match cabins across different cruise lines, of course. But the ships are full, so many people don't seem to care. When I consider what a modest hotel at JFK costs me, cruising, even with inflated pricing, is still a fantastic deal, but I no longer have the overwhelming need to get on a ship the way I once did. BTW the recession is far from over, so the prices should still be bargains (ho, ho, ho).

  8. This is an interesting question the OP has posed, and I'm not sure Celebrity could do anything to chase me away except raise its prices to such heights that I no longer see the need to book a cruise.

Frankly, we've been traveling for so many years, so frequently that the bloom is off the rose. Our most recent was a B2B in December and towards the end of the second cruise, I realized I wanted to be off that ship. No one's fault, perfectly delightful cruise, but simply a case of too much of a good thing.

We'll be off on another one this month and again in March and again in November, plus I'm looking at two more before the end of the year. But in the back of my mind I'm thinking do I really need this? We have friends who at this very minute are on the Pacific Princess approaching Samoa on their trip around the world. LAX to LAX. 111 days. There's no way I could do it even though there was a time it was on my bucket list.

Sorry to ramble but for me, the cost of cruising will be the straw that breaks my back, plain and simple.

  9. Neither had we till Nov 2012 when we stopped while on the Ruby Princess, one and done, you have not missed anything but a Margaritaville, Sunglass Hut and a couple other stores around a swimming pool.

Dont pick a sailing just because it stops, you will be very sad at the choice.

And I'm just the opposite; I want to see everything, and if I don't care for it, I won't return. I do agree with your assessment, but I needed to see for myself. Come to think of it, we had a very relaxing day on the beach doing nothing, something I now do very well. ;)

  10. I recently diversified and took a cruise on the Sapphire Princess. The ship was downright ugly, a tacky mess, a misery to navigate around, none of the graceful lines and elegant decor that S Class ships have, gross public restrooms with filthy floors, you get the picture. I'm not into hairy chest contests or newlywed games, so I'll just stick with Celebrity for now.

Actually, I don't get the picture. After having taken about twenty Princess cruises, I have never once encountered gross public restrooms with filthy floors. While I find I generally prefer X ships, the Princess ships are hardly tacky and quite easily navigated after a day or two on board. Ugly? Ungraceful? Please, don't make me laugh.

  11. We ordered one to try and entice our relatives to join us last time, for their first cruise.

Brochure came, but for totally wrong part of the world. Ordered again, same result. So we gave up. Expensive waste of printing and postage.

I can believe that. Ours came but it was for Alaska, the one place in the world I never intend to revisit. I think they did it on purpose. :D

  12. Thank you for a REAL review. I am so tired of being lured to a "review" only to find it is someone's diary of every waking moment spent on her trip. This one was especially helpful, as we haven't been on the Silhouette in a year but will return next month. Fair, concise, well written, you have it all, Anne.

  13. When I go to the Princess site to pick a stateroom, it gives me two choices. One is to choose my own cabin, the other is to let Princess choose for me. If I opt for that second choice, am I actually purchasing a guarantee cabin in which case I may get lucky. I can't imagine letting Princess assign a cabin unless there is at least the chance of an upgrade, but the term "guarantee" isn't used.

  14. We usually try to do private tours, but on our cruise last month we found it easier and more convenient to use Celebrity. Could not have been more pleased. And in November there was no way I was going to make the trip

to Marrakech except on the Celebrity tour.

  15. We've been in aqua class for our last six or seven cruises on S and M class ships. We generally eat in the MDR once each cruise for various reasons.

I don't think there is any difference in the quality of the food. The difference is as someone put it above, it's eating in a restaurant with better service; it is much quieter...you can actually talk in a normal voice; and although you hear little about it, one of the best features is the full served breakfast. For us, it's an easy decision and we book aqua.

Having said that...celebrity has 14 nights of menus for blu (and for the MDR)...and maybe they change one entree on one of the menus every 6 months. We are a bit aqua'd out (read that as bored with the menu) so we actually booked our next celebrity cruise in CC just for a change. It is possible to have too much of a good thing :)

This pretty much hits the nail on the head. Food in Blu is not significantly better than the MDR, if at all. Some claim it's healthier but you can't prove it by me. In any case eating a rich diet for a week or two should not put most people's health in jeopardy and we are on vacation after all. The ambiance in Blu is what sets it apart, and the hectic pace of the poor staff in the MDR is a downer for us. Too many near collisions.

  16. If I had to choose, I'd rather be elbow to elbow with my neighbor than sit on the aisle where frantic waiters, hustling wine stewards, and other passengers are passing by mere inches from me and my food. If you don't like the assigned table, just tell the hostess that it is not suitable and wait a bit for a better one. It usually is a very short wait.

  17. I think reducing portion sizes could be a good thing judging by how much food goes to waste at each meal at the MDR tables.

    ...

You're right, of course, and it's even worse in the buffet, but it certainly doesn't pertain to me. I not only finish what is on my plate (just as Mommy insisted:p) but I also finish what my wife has left on her plate, and she rarely eats everything served her. The thought of wasting food bothers me. If it's half way decent, consider it down the hatch.
