  1. Unfortunately it is not on the rivers, but if you are using the trains in Germany, you can take Intercity or regional train to Ulm (I think), and take regional train down to Freidrichshafen, which sits on Lake Constance. The museum is a short walk from the train station.

Thank you! It sounds amazing! m--

  2. Thank you all for this great information. We will be going from Amsterdam to Budapest the first half of November on our first river cruise. We will have visited Iceland and Norway, all the way up around the North Cape, so we will be prepared with layers and heavier shoes, rain jackets and umbrellas. Glad to read that November is better for fewer people and river boats. We od have a French door room and hoping to enjoy views from it even if we don't open the door. Very excited!! m--

  3. Thanks. I will try to find out. When I suggested that we could travel around a bit by train, my wife asked if we would need to lug our suitcases around the entire time. With this service, I thought maybe we can have the DB send a few ahead for us.

By the way, here is link for the Zeppelin Museum. I think people interested in trains and river cruises would also be fascinated by this other mode of transportation.

They have a full size replica of the Hindenburg gondola that you can walk through. What I wouldn't give to fly from Germany to NY in one of these.

Is this museum along the Rhine or Main with access form the river cruise ports? The site said it's on Lake Constance but I have no idea where that is. Thanks, m--

  4. Thank you for sharing your perspective. We are a bit anxious about our upcoming first river cruise, but we like cruising. And this river cruise is 2 weeks out of 8 weeks on an extended European trip; some time we will be on our own and some on other types of ships so it will be a complex adventure. Just hoping the river carries us and we don't wind up with a bus tour... for the price (which we feel is quite high) Viking had better take very good care of us. m--

  5. Thanks so very much for posting here and on your blog. We are doing this itinerary Amsterdam to Budapest on Viking Embla in November - our first River Cruise. I don't see a lot (reviews or blogs) on river cruises so you are a godsend to be on "our" cruise line and "our" itinerary!!! I'm absorbing every detail. I want to know it all! How's the food? How's the wine? How's the shampoo? How's the bed? How are the passengers? How are the tours? Any evening entertainment? Do tell us as much as you can!!

Hope you and your mom have a fabulous time! Many thanks!

Oh yes, and hoping all your loved ones back home will be ok through the storms - sending blessings east and west! m--

  6. You set the combination every time you close it, and need not be the same each time.

Yes, to re-lock the safe you enter the code, or more specifically A code... I hit the wrong key once and didn't notice so the good news was the safe was locked... the bad news was I didn't know which keys would unlock it. I had to call front desk and have security come. They were most gracious. I'd bet it happens every day but they smile and help us through our blunders. :) m--

  7. Sorry you're in hospital, hope you are on the mend.

We are looking ahead to a Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal ferry/cruise coming up in October. I've read many Hurtgruten reviews in the CC member reviews section. I know Celebrity and HAL have Norway itineraries but I can't direct you to reviews of them except for in the CC members reviews... look for summer entries and the destinations column.

    Cheers, m--

  8. One way to maybe safe some money is to book an inside cabin for son and friend opposite an outside or balcony, unless of course you want both insides which would be the cheapest for 2 rooms. 4 adults in one room is doable for some folks... very chummy. Usually 2 beds, one Pullman and one sofa beds that folds down, divan style. But check the specific configuration. Even if the 3rd and 4th pax in the one room is a discounted rate, they will be charged full taxes, fees and daily hotel service charge (a.k.a. tips).

If son and friend are underage HAL will not put them in a room by themselves. m--

  9. This is a sad tale that could happen to any of us. And insurance only gives us money, not our possessions, back. I have developed a motto of "Pack like you'll never see it again" but it's still hard to do and hard to see our favorite items and memories evaporate though negligence.

There's still hope that the missing pieces will turn up. I had a 20-something nephew have luggage returned about 3 moths after being lost by an airline... and he didn't have an ID tag on the bag! (can't even imagine) but the claims department eventually ferreted it out.

Hopefully we'll hear the good news someday here! Sending out good thoughts for a happy reunion. m--

  10. Whenever I get off the elevators I glance at the ship diagram and look for the "pointy" end to get myself oriented.

    Otherwise it's pretty basic:

    buffet (back) and pool/hot tubs (middle) up top;

show lounge main level in the front, same level as the dining room main level in the back.

"Front Desk" isn't at the front! it's in the Atrium.

Lower Promenade is where you can walk all around the ship outside.... I remember that because that's where they "lower" the life boats.

    Enjoy!! m--

  11. I believe that one can order room service as an embarkation day lunch option. I know I've ordered room service while I unpacked quietly, avoiding the (then) chaos of the buffet... but I don't recall the hours it was available. It's a good ploy for me to have DH hit the Lido and give me some space to organize :) m--

  12. You can check out an iPod from the library (no charge and it's so easy they were even able to show ME how to use it for the first time) that has an audio tour of the ship's artwork. Usually you start on a top or high deck and work your way down. Lasts maybe 45 minutes or so.

There's stretching, exercise classes, free time in the gym, swim a few laps (ok, very few..) walking the decks but I always wind up stopping and chatting with folks... yoga, meditation, sometimes learn-a-new-language classes ( tried Spanish), complimentary DVDs to pick from by the thousands... well maybe a thousand. We love the lectures, have gone to dance classes (DH too!! can you believe it?) And I hate to miss team trivia (which some days is more "active" than other days - those who go know what I mean ;)...

Plus there's hunting for DH... which can take me around the ship at least twice.... where did he go to enjoy to his Great Courses DVDs?

And when I want to take a breather I slide into a deck chair with a book but hardly ever read the book because watching the ocean is so mesmerizing and the lounge chairs are so comfortable... I love sea days... never enough of them for me.

Oh, and isn't it almost time to eat again? Maybe afternoon tea....

    I'm counting the weeks! m--

  13. Thanks for taking us along UkaLady and mom! We'll be doing the Amsterdam to Budapest cruise in November as our first River Cruise. But it is only 2 weeks, it's part of a 9 week trip which will include two other cruises and stays in Iceland, Bergen, Oslo, Amsterdam and Rome. Clothes for everything form North Cape to Casablanca, and we will do it with one "carry-on" size suitcase and one shoulder tote each. That's really a must with trains, buses, ferries and walk-up hotels. There's only one way to travel.... pack-light! But I'm taking DH's cough drops this time instead of like last time... traipsing around Venice searching for something for his sore throat, not as easy I thought.

You are inspiring me that "I can do this, I can do this, I can do this! m--

  14. I recommend doing your own research. Travel visa pro first gave me free info over the phone. There are many other agents too. It's worth their fee, imho, to use the pros. I had inconsistent info from the cruise lines (HAL once, other line once). CC is a great place to start. Sorry, haven't done India but someone else will have more specifics for you. :) m--

  15. What countries? It makes a big difference. I've used travel pro with excellent service and better prices for Brazil, but did Australia online myself, very easy with acredit card for nomial fee. M
