  1. We did a similar excursion to #1 on our first Alaska cruise. My husband still accuses me of trying to steal one of the sled dog puppies! I wasn't of course but they sure were cute. They had six day old puppies and six week old puppies. We were allowed to hold the six week old ones.

The cart ride was fun. They go really fast. So I would pick this one of your two options.

Our second trip we did do the helicopter to the glacier and sled dog ride there. It was great! I felt the sled ride was over way to quick though. The scenic views from the helicopter were amazing. We booked this excursion direct with the company and saved about $50 per person.

  2. I've seen a couple videos of the afternoon tea and it looks like something I'd enjoy. My husband would go with me, but he cannot have gluten. Do they have any options for him? He actually wouldn't have a problem with choosing sandwiches and just eating the insides, but that can look kind of tacky piling up the uneaten bread.

Just wondering if anyone gluten intolerant has done the afternoon tea and how you handled it.

You can ask at the afternoon tea for their gluten free option. the last tea we were at they had a gluten free scone/biscuit of some sort.

Also- just curious -- your husband wouldn't be affected by the traces of bread that could be left on the fillings? the celiacs i know would be concerned about this. in which case, the suggestion above for asking for just fillings would be a thought.

  3. There is a cruise ship called The World. It is a live on cruise ship and cruises all over the world. The rooms are actually like condos on the ship and you buy and own them and live on the ship or can live off and join them wherever they are when you choose.

I was specifically referring to the terms used on the Princess website on their results page when you search for their world cruise options. the 'world cruise liner' option is offered on the Sea Princess.

  4. on the princess website, I searched for world cruises and received results for 'world cruise', 'world cruise segment', and 'world cruise liner'.

I understand that the segment is part of one of the listed world cruises, but I can't figure out what is meant by world cruise liner.

Can someone explain what this is?

There is also a Circle Pacific cruise, and a Circle Pacific Liner, and this appears as though the 'liner' is actually a 'segment'.

    Are the terms interchangeable?

    I'm confused.

  5. I don't have any knowledge of the GMO issues, but just saying, this has nothing to do with celiac disease, it's the Protein part of the grain of wheat, barley, rye and (still conversations going on re- oats) that causes the damage to the small intestine :)

Yes I agree GMOs don't have anything to do with celiac disease. But another poster implied that it did. And ever since then Kamloops50 has been posting incorrect information about the existence of GM wheat which I have been trying to counter with facts and links to support those facts.

  6. The sensitivity to wheat grown exponential in the last 10 years in Canada . This mostly to production of GMO wheat in Canada.

Larger quantities of wheat produced aren't GMO.

Farmers have complained that they can' use the seed from one crop to a new one next year. The seeds they get if been modified so that the seed produced can't grow and produce seed again.

I dont know where you are getting your information from but this is just false. And again. There is no genetically modified wheat grown commercially anywhere. Breeding techniques used to create new varieties of wheat are not genetic modification. Please stop posting incorrect information.

  7. One thing these reports don't say . Canada grows GMO Canola . The pollen from these plants can blow on the wind to adjacent wheat fields(cross contamination) .Canada has a number of different ways to create GMO products . Hybridization of wheat in Canada is considered to be GMO . Canada also uses gene splicing to create new wheat strains.

Both are considered to be GMO products .

Because of this the EU doesn't allow Wheat or Canola to be imported.

Canadian wheat is a major export to the EU:

Canada’s agricultural exports to the EU totalled an annual average of $2.5 billion between 2011 and 2013, led by wheat (durum and common), soybeans and other oilseeds, canola oil, frozen fruits and maple syrup.

  8. Canada produces a lot of GMO wheat As a result we have it in many commercial food products

Canada does not grow genetically modified wheat on a commercial scale, no country does. gm wheat has been been developed by science, however due to a lack of consumer acceptance it is not grown.

as per page 22 of this link:

    http://gmoinquiry.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/where-in-the-world-gm-crops-foods.pdf

There is no genetically modified wheat grown or eaten anywhere in the world, and it has never been on the market. In 2004, Monsanto withdrew requests

for government approval of its GM herbicide-tolerant

Roundup Ready wheat in Canada and the US

because of widespread farmer and consumer

opposition in both countries, as well as in major

    international wheat markets.

Even the wheat belly author says wheat is not genetically modified:

    http://www.wheatbellyblog.com/2012/02/wheat-is-not-genetically-modified/

Wheat has been bred for disease resistance and other traits, but through other breeding techniques, not genetic modification.

  9. There are also alcoholic gluten-free ciders that can be enjoyed on board Princess served by any bartender. They can be enjoyed similarly as a nice cold beer. :)

Many years ago I worked in the gastroenterology department at a regional hospital. With all the 8 years I worked there, we only had two patients who were actually diagnosed with celiac disease. Now celiac has been around for thousands of years, but the increase in the volume of gluten-sensitivity is mostly recent. I don't question that it is real for many people and there are also some people who chose gluten-free as a dietary choice because they feel better without gluten in their diet.

I've often wondered if the increase of gluten intolerance wasn't caused by the genetically modified wheat we see almost everywhere now in our food.

There is no GMO wheat commercially available.

  10. I just wanted to note we had issues booking the UST in 2010 - six years ago I know - but thought I would share this thread I wrote back then:

    http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1185986

we got no response to our letter written to Princess afterwards other than the UST can only be booked onboard and is limited in numbers. so we felt they didn't even get the point of our letter which was the unfairness of allowing a group services rep to prebook all spots for the group members.

  11. One thing you may want to consider is what we did this summer.

Icelandair allows a free stop-over at Iceland on flights from North America to Europe.

We did a few days in Amsterdam, a 12 day British Isles cruise and six days in Iceland.

A wonderful trip and no Nasty North Atlantic

Thank you for sharing the fantastic pictures!

The flight stop over idea is interesting. I will mention it to our group.

  12. We booked the 2017 Iceland cruise as soon as it was available, which was last November, the week before Thanksgiving. At that time, costs were more reasonable, but since they deemed it a President's Cruise, prices went up about $600 per person for the oceanview that we booked. So I would look for this November for 2018's cruise to be available and at a lesser cost than what is showing for the 2017 trip.

    Hope that helps!

Yes! Thank you for the tip!

What makes it the presidents cruise for 2017? Is it just whatever the president decides he likes? I just assumed it was the name they gave it for whatever reason. I didn't realize it was special

  13. OP, X only do an Iceland trip once per year. We've done it twice and it's excellent. However it tends to be quite an expensive cruise due to them only offering it once per year,

Thank you for confirming there is only one Iceland itinerary per year on Celebrity. Looking at the prices for 2017 it does seem a bit high compared to other destinations but understandable given the limited sailing.

I had a look at Oceania as suggested and was surprised that price-wise they were a very competitive option because they were including airfare (at least it seemed that way?) and there is a special promo on for choosing OBC or another perk. Would have to watch for a similar sale/promo once 2018 is released.

I am going to keep an eye out for the 2018 itineraries and see what everyone is offering. Thanks to those who offered suggestions and let me know I still have a while to wait for the new itineraries to be released !

  14. Thanks for all of the suggestions!

We were considering the crown princess trip. Princess also has the smaller pacific princess doing Iceland and Norway. But I like the amenities on the bigger ship.

I will check out Oceania and HAL for their itineraries.

We are planning to travel with friends who really enjoyed their X cruise to Alaska and so this is their line of choice. We prefer princess but have sailed and like both. We've also been on HAL but I didn't like the food - willing to give it another go though if the itinerary is right.

  15. They only had the one this year that was in Iceland for 4 days in 3 ports. We were fortunate to be on that cruise, especially since it didn't rain in any port on the whole cruise until the last part of the last port day of the cruise in Belfast. It was a wonderful itinerary and I hope they have it again for you in 2018.

It sounds like an amazing voyage. I see on the 2017 cruise there is an overnight in Reykjavik which would be great! So - what I'm gathering then is they typically just have the one cruise to Iceland planned each year (it's called the President's Cruise in 2017).

We are also looking at itineraries for Princess. They have four ports in Iceland but no overnights. Princess also doesn't have 2018 itineraries posted yet, so we are just doing some looking and pre-planning right now to assess our options.

    Thanks for your comment!

  16. Right now, the Celebrity inventory only includes voyages through April 2018 (except for the Expedition). Probably, sometime in October or November, they will release the schedule through April 2019.

    Thanks!

    I appreciate the info.

  17. Does anyone know when Celebrity will post itineraries for 2018 that include Iceland? Also, we checked on their website today and only saw one itinerary for 2017 - has Celebrity offered more than one Iceland itinerary in the past?

  18. Buffalo to FLL 5:30 am non-stop and we're flying 1 day before the cruise on the last week of October, from Toronto btw, never flown from any US airport before but took my chances because the fare and flight times are hard to ignore.. Plus the glamorous reviews of SW prior to this fiasco.

I fly out of Buffalo whenever I have the option (from Fort Erie). it's much more convenient than Toronto, as its a domestic flight at that point instead of an international - no customs, just security.

The last time I flew SouthWest to Florida was early December and we had no problems. we also had the first flight of the day with multiple other options available if it was missed/delayed. I think flying out one day ahead pre-cruise for this route is plenty - and we were risking a snow storm! if there isn't a flight - worse case scenario, its a 20 hour drive :)
