  1. We recommend a road trip which (at a minimum) includes stops (to actually visit and walk around) in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Keep in mind that tour buses are not permitted to enter into Positano (only cars and vans can go down into the city) so most cruise line excursions will only include a view of Positano (from the Amalfi Drive looking down) which we think is almost a crime. Positano is worthy of some exploration on foot and you are only going to get this opportunity if you rent your own car, take a small private tour, or get there via the regional SITA bus.

I was thinking of taking an 8:40 ferry from Salerno to Positano (70 minute ride) then spending a couple hours in Positano, taking a 12:00 ferry to Amalfi (25 minutes) spending time in Amalfi and then returning to Salerno on a 4:15 ferry (35 minutes) I am assuming the ferry would land in city/town centers. Have also looked into private tour to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, but don't want concern over heights to detract from experience which is why I am thinking of this option. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  2. Has anyone had experience taking the local ferries from Salerno to Positano and/or Amalfi? How did this compare with taking a land based tour? Just wondering which option might be better for one who is not a "fan" of heights.

    Thanks, Mary

  3. We stayed in Buenos Aires for 3 nights prior to a cruise in March. We stayed in the Recoleta area in a small hotel called CasaSur Art Hotel that had good reviews on Trip Advisor. Our room was a bit small, but the staff was very helpful. (If I returned I would upgrade to a larger room) The location was great; we were able to walk to almost all of the major sights. It was not close to the subway line, but that was not an issue for us since we either walked or took cabs which were quite reasonable. The hotel offers a free 3+ hour tour of the city on Saturday afternoons which was excellent. The guide was great - he really loved the city and gave us lots of local insight.

We did the Argentine Experience on our first night. The food was excellent and it was a good introduction to BA culture. I would recommend it. Went to Fervor another night (2 blocks from our hotel) which was a very good restaurant. At least half of the patrons were local, which we felt was a good endorsement!

We found that many restaurants gave us a good exchange rate if we paid in dollars. As a result, we did not exchange money on the street - we used an official exchange booth in a shopping mall near our hotel for incidental expenses. While we were there, the difference between the official and blue rates was about 3.5 pesos so while we might have done better exchanging on the street, we didn't have to worry about counterfeit money.

We really enjoyed our stay and hope you have a great experience as well.

  4. We are flying from Boston to Rome in September and decided to go with Aer Lingus. Price was marginally less than non stop Alitalia, but real reason was that we decided we would prefer to break up the 9 1/2 hour return flight with the ability to get out, walk around and stretch our legs. On the way to Rome, we are stopping in Dublin for a couple of days and on the way home, if we went with Alitalia, we would have ended up getting into Boston later than on the Aer Lingus connection. At the end of a trip, we would rather get home earlier!

  5. We will be docked in Salerno from 7:00AM to 6:00PM. Is it too ambitious to take the train to Pompeii in the morning, spend 2 hours wandering around, head back to Salerno and then take the ferry to Amalfi and back. Based on train and ferry schedules it looks doable, but maybe not realistic? Thanks for any advice on a DIY day in Salerno

  6. OK, I just got off Serenade on Saturday.

I will say that yes, we did hear scraping noises during the day as people were moving their chairs around.

    It wasn't THAT bad.

I will say that it was better than being in a suite where they started cleaning the pool area at 4 AM!!!!

I'm still catching up on my sleep from that. :(

We are booked in 1038 on the Serenade - not directly under Solarium pool, but in that general area - do you think noise will be an issue?

  7. We just got off a b2b on Celebrity Infinity. On the first leg, Jack Daniels was part of the classic beverage package. On day 2 of the second cruise (March 17), my husband was told prices had been increased and it was no longer available on the classic package. I suspect same thing happened with Jameson.

  8. We will be in Funchal on the first Sunday in November. We were thinking of going to Camara de Lobos for lunch/sightseeing and then stopping at Reid's for a drink on the way back to the ship. I saw from an earlier bus that there is a bus from Funchal to Camara de Lobos, but can we find a taxi there to get to Reid's?

We did the cable car to Monte and the Madeira Story museum on a prior trip and thought we would like to see a little more of the island. Does this itinerary make sense or do you have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for all your helpful information

    Mary
