  1. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Sandi! Especially since you’re on the road. Enjoy Morgan’s graduation. Congratulate her for me.

Roy, thank you for our maps.  Another glorious morning. Yesterday morning was really humid until the Easterlies arrived. A hint of what is to come. Still no rain. But the days have been so enjoyable.

Vanessa, thank you for keeping up with us. Happy to read that you are sleeping upstairs. Hope the discomfort soon disappears.

Gym, Aldi, Bindi walks, a visit with my Sister and a dip in the pool should keep me busy.

    Banfi-Rosso-di-Montalcino

Definitely one Italian I would love to try. Lots of consumer fans. Easy to find & reasonably priced. Online prices start at $19.99.

    Winemaker’s notes

    VARIETAL
    Sangiovese
    DESCRIPTION
One of the classics of Banfi Montalcino production.
The mild winter temperatures and low rainfall allowed the vines to begin the growing cycle within the standard timeframe. During the night of April 8, some vineyards were hit by a late frost, which delayed the phenological phases of the vines. However, thanks to mild temperatures and sunny days in the spring, the vines were able to regain their growth and production balance, reaching excellent ripening during the following months. The harvest began slightly later than usual, but the continuous ventilation and good temperature fluctuations in August and September allowed the grapes to develop excellent acidity with very interesting aromatic profiles.
The result is a complex wine characterized by a bright ruby red colour. On the nose, aromas of blackberries and raspberry meet light notes of coffee and tobacco. In the mouth the structure is wide, harmonious and well balanced by a marked acidity. Excellent persistence on the palate.
Ideal pairing with game and medium-aged cheeses. The remarkable structure allows a good aging.
    TECHNICAL NOTES
Soil: hill area of the estate under vine, with low to moderate incline. The soils develop on different types of sediments, from the clay sands of the marine Pliocene, deep soils with abundant and calcareous stones, to the gray-blue clays which are moderately deep mineral soils that tend to retain humidity.
Trellising System: spurred cordon – Banfi aberello Vine Density: 4200 - 5500 vines/ha.
    Hectar Yield: 70-75 q/ha.
    Fermentation: in temperature-controlled (20-30°C) stainless-steel tanks
Aging: in French oak casks (90-60 hl.) and in French oak barrique (350 l.) for 12 months
    Alcohol: 15,5%
    Suggested serving temperature : 16-18°C

  2. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Sandi. Enjoy your time with the family. Roy, thank you for our maps! Another glorious morning. AT&T has almost finished laying its new cable, so it will soon be able to compete with MetroNet, who laid its cable last year. The only one happy about all of this is Bindi. She knows workers leave nummy food scraps. 😎

Vanessa, thank you for sharing our happenings. I hope others on the Care list can soon move to the Cheers list - as you did.
Anyone seen any posts from Jake, aka

Crazy Cat Man? I don’t believe I have his correct CC name. I hope all is well, it has been awhile.

Gym, Bindi walks, planting, wine tasting at my favorite wine bar & then a Panera take out dinner at my place with my wine tasting friends. With wine of course. This month’s wine tasting features the wines of Portugal. Sounds like a perfect day to me.

Zuccardi 2019 Tito Malbec-Cabernet Franc (Paraje Altamira)

I used the 2019 vintage info, since it is ready to drink! A bit pricey, but for lovers of full-bodied reds - it might be worth the price. A decent number of distributors with online prices starting at $42.95 Later vintages have the same great ratings and since you might have to wait a bit to enjoy them - they cost a bit less.

    Winemaker Notes

Violet color with deep blue hues. Black and red fruit and other herbal notes. The palate has a silky entry with nice and juicy tannins, aromatic and receiving end of a long and deep mouth complexity.
    • 94Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2019 Tito Zuccardi is a co-fermentation of approximately 85% Malbec and 15% Cabernet Franc and comes from the same plot in Altamira every year. They have increased the presence of concrete and lowered the oak here, some 30% in 500-liter oak barrels. I tasted this next to the 2020 and 2021, and you can see the difference between the three years. 2019 is the freshest and most elegant of the three; it has notes of herbs and spices and fine-grained tannins and is medium to full-bodied, with the fluid character of the vintage. Rating: 94+

    • 93Wine Enthusiast

This winery in the heart of Uco Valley has produced a full-bodied and polished blend of 85% Malbec and 15% Cabernet Franc. The nose reveals aromas of herbs and wet stones and introduces a balanced palate. Plum, and structured, this is a good example of the quality that white wines from Chile’s coastal vineyards can achieve. Drink through 2030.

    Vietti 2019 Lazzarito Nebbiolo (Barolo)

This is one amazing sounding Italian wine. Too bad it is outside of my budget. A decent number of distributors with online prices starting at $164.99. Heck, a glass would almost outside my budget!

    Winemaker Notes

Intense ruby-red colour with garnet hues. The nose is alluring and profound. Notes of hay, cut grass, tobacco, white pepper and wild mint emerge. On the palate, it is robust and potent, with a taut, mineral finish. As is typical of Serralunga, the tannins are stark, sharp and very profound. The sweet persistence of the finish is delightful.
    • 98Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the Vietti 2019 Barolo Lazzarito is a historic cornerstone wine of this mighty portfolio. It is also one of the Vietti Barolos that consistently delivers extreme quality and pleasure with each new release. Like the other wines presented here, winemaking is straightforward, with submerged cap fermentations lasting 30 to 35 days (although those times were reduced in 2019 because this vintage was not suited to long maceration times). Serralunga d'Alba always delivers power and richness. There are aromas of dried tobacco leaf, perfumed tea, crushed rose and iron ore. The bouquet is extremely expressive.

    • 97Vinous
The 2019 Barolo Lazzarito continues a trend seen in recent years in which the focus has been more about finesse than raw power. Intense red fruit, iron, dried herbs, chalk, dried rose petal and white pepper all run through this deep, virile Barolo. The power and intensity of Serralunga really come alive on the heady, explosive finish. Bright saline notes linger on the deep, resonant finish. A Barolo of raw, unbridled power, the Lazzarito demands patience.
    • 96Jeb Dunnuck

Another pale ruby Barolo, the 2019 Barolo Lazzarito is from a 2.5-hectare parcel of the cru and reveals a hint of purple flowers, with a mix of red and blue fruit berries. It has more expansiveness on the palate, with more broadness, although it is not weighted. It offers a light balsamic tone, with rosemary and fresh herbs, and is persistent on the long finish. This will benefit from more time in bottle and drink.

    • 94Wine Spectator

An enticing expression of cherry, plum, licorice, earth and spice flavors, this red delivers both poise and power, showing breadth and harmony. Lingers on the finish with plum, spice and mineral notes.

    • 94Wine Enthusiast

This is the Barolo we have been looking for! Black cherry, warmed spices, crushed stone and dried herbs flow from the glass. The palate is firm and states its purpose to take some time in the cellar. The core of fruit is present but reticent while the black tea, anise, pepper and mineral edge are present but want more time.

    • 94James Suckling

Orange peel with raspberry, crab apple and violet aromas follow through to a medium body, with sage, lavender and raspberry flavors. Firm and racy tannins. From organically grown grapes. Vegan.

Time for a quick check in.  After breakfast the 4 of us got in our car and headed off to see West Edmonton Mall.  We wandered around a good while, watched the sea lion show, then stopped for lunch.  After ordering, my phone rang - it was the TAVR coordinator calling to say Maurice’s case had been approved and he was officially scheduled for the replacement on May 22nd.  I was so relieved, I burst into tears right in the middle of Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.   The waitress came running over to see if everything was okay, but DH explained it this way:  “She cries when she’s sad, and she cries when she’s happy.  This is a happy cry.”   Now we can relax, knowing the surgery will take place and bring with it a return to good health for DH.  Hallelujah!!!

Annie, I second Maureen’s suggestion - at least for Mayo Clinic. I have no experience with MD Anderson, but I know two people who had exhausted all local health options and went to Mayo. One would have died had she not gone. The other had been told her only option was palliative care.

Both were given the care they needed to recover and thrive.  And Mayo Clinic is not quite as far for you as MD Anderson is.

Bodegas Godeval 2022 Godello Godello (Valdeorras)

This Spanish white wine sounds interesting. I would love a taste, since I know I have never had it before. A decent number of distributors with online prices starting at $16.99.

    Distributor notes

Vina Godeval was founded in 1986 and is one of the leading artisanal wine producers in the Valdeorras area of Galicia in north west Spain. Only the Godello grape is grown here on the estate's 15 hectares of vineyards. It is indigenous to Galicia but can also be found in northern Portugal and makes particularly fine, vibrant and minerally whites. Valdeorras is a Spanish wine appellation in an area of Galicia also known as 'Green Spain' and means 'Valley of Gold'. As well as Godello, Valdeorras is renowned for its red wines produced from the Mencia and Garnacha Tinto grapes. This particular 100% Godello is unoaked and was vinified in stainless steel tanks.

A clear pale-lemon in colour. subtle aromas of citrus fruits, beeswax and wild flowers. On the palate, crisp with a pronounced mineral backbone leading to a lively yet lengthy finish. Great with boquerones en escabeche (Moorish pickled anchovies), artichokes with clams, bacon and piquillo peppers or a chunk of aged Manchego cheese.

    Le Gay 2020

I would love a taste of this Bordeaux red. Just reading the descriptions tells me I would enjoy this one. But it is out of my price range. A decent number of distributors, but you won’t find this one at CVS. Online prices start at $99.99.

So much black mushroom to the dark fruit, such as blackberries and bramble berries. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied, yet refined and polished, with lovely tannins and fantastic typicity and complexity. It’s so multidimensional and structured, yet there’s a weightless character and personality to it. Thought-provoking and sophisticated. Real Pomerol.

    • 96Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Le Gay erupts from the glass with scents of molten licorice and dark chocolate, giving way to a tantalizing core of baked black cherries, prunes and blackberry preserves, plus a hint of cardamom. The full-bodied palate is rich and decadent, featuring layers of black fruits and exotic spices with a firm yet velvety texture and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. A hedonic powerhouse!
      Barrel Sample: 94-96+
    • 94Jeb Dunnuck

A surprisingly up-front, soft, almost mid-weight effort from this chateau, the 2020 Chateau Le Gay offers a pretty perfume of both red and black fruits as well as loads of flowers, spice, leafy herbs, and incense. Medium-bodied, balanced, and elegant on the palate, it has polished tannins, terrific balance, sweet oak, and outstanding length. This exceedingly elegant, seamless beauty lacks the density and concentration of the top wines in the vintage but is nevertheless a gorgeous, classic Pomerol that will evolve for two decades. Best After 2025.

    • 94Decanter
Careful and seductive oaking, this develops and builds in power and finesse over the palate, and is a seriously enjoyable Pomerol, just packed full of appellation typicity. A yield of 35hl/ha, vinified in new oak barrels, and will stay in barrel for 18 months.

Thistledown 2021 Thorny Devil Old Vine Grenache (McLaren Vale)

The name of this wine just screams Australia to me! It is a name that can stand up to a critic saying it has a nose that has a nuance of “hung deli meat”! Really? Who goes around sniffing hung deli meat? Easy to find with a reasonable price. Online prices start at $16.99.

    Winemaker Notes

In 2021, the fruit for Thorny Devil came from a variety of some of the finest vineyards in McLaren Vale. Old bush trained vines and sandy, mineral strewn vineyards ensure that this is amongst our most delicious Grenaches. The resulting wine has the characteristic McLaren Vale perfume and spice with a beguiling texture and perfume that unfolds, layer by layer.

    Blend: 100% Grenache

    Professional Ratings

    • 95Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Aromas of savory spice, hung deli meat and blood fill the senses, but it is in the mouth where the purity and succulence of the fruit is revealed. This 2021 Thorny Devil Grenache is long and savory, sweet and fine, built into a framework of pliable tannin and exotic spice. Balanced and exciting.
    • 94Australian Wine Companion
While this doesn’t quite have the thrust of its more expensive siblings, the shimmy of florals and red-fruited fragrances, juxtaposed against a veil of diaphanous tannins, sandy and detailed, is impressive. Crunchy and tensile – although a little looser around the seams, for imminent pleasure – and thoroughly impressive.
    • 94Wine Enthusiast

Elegance and ease are the name of the game on this silky, mid-weight Grenache. Succulent cherry and blueberry (as well as vanilla, florals and a gentle spice) make for a nose you could dive into. There’s lovely freshness to the slinky palate. It’s tugged gently by savory, sandtextured tannins. A sexy wine right now, this could gain savory complexity over the next few years. The best part? It’s stellar bang for buck.

    • 93James Suckling

Dense aromas of baked red cherry, strawberry, black tea and rosemary. Full-bodied with succulent red fruit and spice. The silky tannins are well structured and guide the palate through an even-keeled finish. White pepper spice. Nicely composed. Vegan. Drink or hold.

    Josh Cellars Sauvignon Blanc

Easy to find and priced to try. I am amazed at some of the places that carry this wine. Online prices start at $10.88, you might find it for less locally! Vintage does not seem to matter. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That makes me a bit suspicious. Perhaps we should think of this one as a good table wine.

    Winemaker’s notes

Our Sauvignon Blanc is sunshine in a glass. Aromatic and bright with a crisp, clean finish, this wine features flavors of lemon and kiwi and scents of green apple.

Pairs beautifully with seafood appetizers, summer salads, and grilled chicken as well as light and simple foods all year long. This wine is especially well suited for summertime sipping in the sun.

Bright and crisp, with flavors of lemon and kiwi in the glass, complemented by notes of green apple in the nose.

Emrich Schonleber Halenberg Riesling R 2019

Make sure you opt for the label with the “R” on it. Possibly stands for Reserve, but other versions of this Riesling do not have the same rating. Fairly easy to find, but pricey. However the price is reasonable for a wine that carries a 99 - classic rating. Online prices start at $71.89.

    #11 James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of 2023

A late-released giant from the great 2019 vintage with a mesmerising nose of exotic fruits and honeysuckle. This is only just beginning to approach its mature best, but the enormous concentration on the mid-palate is already clear. So much ripe apricot and mirabelle! Then comes the almost overwhelming brilliance at the super-long finish. Further patience will be amply rewarded! Drink or hold.

  13. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Sandi! I really appreciate you standing in for Rich & Jacqui. Roy, thank you for our maps! I appreciate you standing in for Rich! Another glorious morning. No fawns this morning, but they sure entertained my dinner guests last night. They zoomed all over the place. 😎

Vanessa - 7hours of sleep. Woo Hoo!  May the healing, lack of pain & numbness and sleeping continue! Thank you for keeping up with us.

Gym, Bindi walks, chores, dinner at a friends. I might hop in the pool after the gym. The water is already 88 - Dixie knows the importance of this number.

    Argiano-Brunello-Di-Montalcino 2018

I have enjoyed some amazing wines, but I am fairly certain that I have never enjoyed anyone’s “wine of the year”.  So  I chose the 2018 vintage for that reason.

I would love to taste this. And if I fell in love, I might buy a bottle, even though it is outside of my budget. I do make exceptions. Numerous online distributors with prices starting at $59.99.

Note: if you scroll to the end there is a nice bonus. Wine Spectator provides a link to their top wines lists!

    95 Wine Spectator’s Best Wine of 2023!

    Brunello di Montalcino 2018

In the world of wine, a change of ownership or a stylistic paradigm shift can reap huge benefits, but there are always risks. In the case of Argiano, change has paid off in spades, as new owners arrived with a commitment to a return to a more traditional expression of Brunello. Reflecting more than $10 million in investment in the estate over a decade, the stellar quality of Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2018 earns it Wine of the Year honors from Wine Spectator in 2023.

Argiano changed course in 2013, when Brazilian billionaire André Esteves and a group of investors purchased Argiano from Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano and Bordeaux-trained winemaker Hans Vinding-Diers, who wanted to focus on their project in Argentina, Bodega Noemía de Patagonia.

A relatively large property by Montalcino standards, Argiano is one of the region’s historic wineries. Its villa, recently restored, dates from 1581. The vineyards sit on a plateau in the central part of the Brunello zone, just west of the village of Sant’Angelo in Colle. The northern vineyard parcels—made up of alluvial clay, alluvial sandy silt and loam, with outcroppings of limestone and clay over a bed of limestone and marl—are planted to Sangiovese. The southern part of the estate is devoted to international grape varieties.

The 141 acres of vineyards consist of 54 acres designated for Brunello and 25 acres for Rosso di Montalcino. In 2014, 17 acres of Sangiovese were planted with a selection developed by Paolo de Marchi of Isole & Olena in Chianti Classico in conjunction with the French nursery Guillaume. The new projects fell under the direction of Bernardino Sani. He had interned in the cellar at Argiano in 2002, rejoining the Argiano team as sales and marketing director in 2012. At the beginning of 2014, he was appointed CEO.

In late 2014, Sani enlisted consulting enologist Alberto Antonini to work with his team of cellar master Adriano Bambagioni and vineyard manager Francesco Monari. The first task was cleaning the wine-aging cellar and investing in large casks of 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000 liters, plus 600-liter tonneaux to replace the barriques that were used to age both the classic Brunello and a single-vineyard Brunello bottling called Vigna del Suolo. (A new vinification facility had been built in 2000.)

The team then turned its attention to the vineyards. With the help of viticultural consultant Pedro Parra, the various parcels were mapped for soil type and composition and electromagnetic surveys were undertaken. The results provided a better understanding of how to manage each parcel, pinpoint any problem areas, determine harvest dates and plan micro-vinifications. They also eliminated fertilizers and pesticides to work organically, though the estate has not obtained certification. Since the change, Monari feels the vines’ vegetative growth and the grape quality have become more uniform.

The classic Brunello di Montalcino is a blend of six different parcels. (The Vigna del Suolo bottling, made since the 2016 vintage, comes from a 10-acre parcel of 60-year-old Sangiovese vines planted on pure limestone soils.) After harvesting, the grapes for the Brunello are chilled with carbon dioxide for a five- to six-day cold maceration. Fermentation takes place in cement vats with indigenous yeast, and maceration on the skins runs 20 to 21 days. After the malolactic conversion in cement, the new wine ages 3.5 years in 1,000-, 2,000- and 3,000-liter casks. The 2018 was bottled in May 2022.

The move to a traditional style infuses the Brunellos with greater purity and energy. Combined with the elegant 2018 vintage’s character, the classic Brunello features rose, strawberry and cherry aromas and flavors, along with wild herb, mineral and cut hay accents matched to a racy profile.

Sani is a big fan of the 2018 vintage. “Personally, I love 2018, it’s very classic,” he told me in October 2022, when I first tasted the Brunello di Montalcino and Vigna del Suolo 2018. That said, there were challenges up until the beginning of August, including a lot of rain in the spring. (Sani reported hail on July 15, but it affected the southern vineyards of the estate, where the international grape varieties are planted.) A north tramontana wind in the last week of September ushered in dry conditions and concentrated the grapes. It also led to cooler nights and perfect conditions to ripen the Sangiovese. The Argiano team began picking at the end of September, finishing by the second week of October.

“My goal is to have Argiano become an ambassador of Brunello di Montalcino again,” Sani confided when I visited in April 2016. With the investment in the cellar and vineyards, he has achieved that goal and more.

For its traditional expression of Brunello, its quality and its value, Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is not only a leading representation of the region, it’s our Wine of the Year.

    Greetings from beautiful Port Charlotte.

It’s 65 this AM heading up to a warm 87 with the usual sunny skies.

    Good selection of days.

    Not sure about the meal.

My Tampa Bay Lightning are toast as they have lost the first 3 games of their playoff series against the Florida Panthers, the Bolts need a miracle.

Today is our last Men’s Golf Assn. Tournament of the season. Most of the Snowbirds have already headed north with only a few still here. Traffic has thinned out and the restaurants aren’t as crowded, hallelujah!

Have a great day and stay well.

I hope what happened to my Bruins last year does NOT happen to your lightning. Out in the first series!

  15. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Sandi! Roy thank you for our maps! Another gorgeous morning in paradise. I believe one of this year’s fawns is waiting for Bindi and I to come out. This is the third morning in a row that the little one has been on one side of the house or the other. It is very curios about Bindi. Ooh, I am currently being entertained by three of this year’s fawns zooming around the yard!

Vanessa, thank you for keeping up with us! So happy to read that the discomfort is from the incision and not leg pain or numbness. And you are sleeping a decent number of hours! May the discomfort go away and the sleep hours grow longer.

    Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad

This Cava from Spain has a lot of consumer fans. It is fairly easy to find. Online prices start at $24.98.

    Winemaker’s notes

Reserva Heredad is the estate’s crown jewel—our tête de cuvée—a Cava blended from just Macabeo and Parellada that enjoys aging on the lees for 30 months or longer and riddling by hand.

    REGION
    Catalunya, Spain
    APPELLATION
    D.O. Penedès
    GRAPE
Blend of 75% Macabeo; 25% Chardonnay
    VINIFICATION
From grape to glass it takes three years to produce a bottle of Reserva Heredad. The grapes are 100% hand harvested and transported to the winery in 25kg boxes to prevent oxidation. The must comes from the free run juice which is the lightest pressing of the grapes. The first fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled low temperature between 57 and 61°F, to retain the primary aromas of the grapes. The blend is made up of nine different wines, each one vinified in separate tanks. Macabeo is the dominant grape in Reserva Heredad, contributing acidity and freshness. It also allows the wine to age well, during the 30 plus months it is in contact with the lees. Both the first and the second fermentations are carried out using our own selected yeast strains. These give structure, softness on the palate, more complex aromas of honey, dried fruit, and flowers. The riddling or turning of all the bottles of Reserva Heredad is done by hand.
    AGING
The wine is aged 30+ months.
    AROMA
Lightly smoky opening aromas with touches of biscuit and hints of honey and flower petals.
    PALATE
The palate is excellent, fruity, and full of flavor, delivering a delightful sense of abundance.
    SERVING SUGGESTIONS
Pairs well with: creamy pasta and filet mignon. Also stunning as a holiday gift.

Vanessa, I so love reading your post-surgery posts. I hope your recovery continues to go smoothly. Hope you go easy on yourself.  Thank you for keeping up with us!

Gym, Bindi walks, lots of post visitor chores and way too many leftovers. I need to wash my car - badly. The trip to the beach Monday resulted in a salty/sandy layer on it. It was so windy and the waves equaled those of a hurricane at high tide. No wonder Rich & Jacqui were rocking on the Volendam as they headed North.
