You're being very presumptuous about why I made the decision to buy a spa pass. NOBODY is making me think anything. I enjoy the spa experience and no one will ever convince me I can get the same experience in one of the public pools or hot tubs that usually have kids in them. Anyway, do you and stick to the mediocre. I prefer to use the VIP spa area, including the thermal rooms, and I paid to do so. Please refrain from telling others to do what you do and using misinformation to support your assumptions. Especially in a judgmental tone. I'm not listening anyway.

I'm not sure how one can use a judgmental tone in a chat room. And I don't recall telling others what to do or using misinformation, or being presumptuous for that matter. Salt is a mineral. I could put salt in my bath tub and call it a mineral bath. I have been in a thalasso pool and a tub in the spa on other carnival ships and my experience was the same. I came out wet. The thalasso tub is, by definition, a sea water bath. If you want to pay a premium for that, more power to you. But I am here to tell people that, in my experience, it's a hot tub. The same hot tub that's in every spa in every Carnival ship. The only difference is that it's bigger and you have to pay for it. A lot.

I don't need to Google anything, I know what that means as I frequent spas with mineral baths. Anyway, swimming at the beach does not duplicate being in a large, very warm pool with many jets surrounding you on all sides and built-in reclining seating. It is an EXPERIENCE. I don't particularly find it relaxing to be in one of the hot tubs or pools on the decks. Part of the allure of the thalasso pool is it's relaxing and semi-private. In fact, I wish it wasn't overlooking the gym. Only issue I had with it. I understand you don't think it's worth it but I do so I paid to enjoy it on my cruise. To each his very own.

I don't doubt the allure. I've been there. But the privacy exists in the hot tubs in the spa on other ships as well. And the built in reclining seating and jets are there, too. And on the other ships, it's free to use. That's the only difference. It's simply a large hot tub. Don't let Carnival make you think there's a difference.

Actually, the thalasso pool is filled with minerals and ionized water, so it's not just a "big hot tub." Helped with my legs and feet swelling, so I can attest to the fact that it's not just a basic hot tub. You can also smell the minerals in the water. Well worth it even though I failed to use it everyday like I planned. Not enough time in the day to do it all on the Dream.

Yea. Minerals like salt and calcium and potassium that naturally occur in sea water. Thalasso literally means "sea water". Google it. And that's what it is, as are all the pools and hot tubs. Although the regular hot tubs are desalinated I think. So, they lack those all important minerals. But you could always swim at the beach. They usually have plenty of those on cruises.. I'm curious what the minerals smell like though.. Do they smell like sea water?

How is it different than the big hot tub in the Spa on Spirit class ships?

It's not any different. It's just a big hot tub, nothing more.

Why?

Experienced cruiser here and I have seriously thought of bringing them. But we live in Tampa so usually drive to ports and don't have to worry about flying and luggage restrictions. If I was flying, I wouldn't bother. My main motivation would be to use them on the ship, not in ports. It would be nice to plop a chair down on deck somewhere and to be able to leave for 5 minutes to get a drink and be able to come back and still have a seat and not be called a chair hog. And I have a beach umbrella that comes apart and would fit in my chair bag that would be good for ports too.. I may bring that too..

What happens if you get into a car accident or have an unexpected emergency?

 

When I was 21, I passed out and had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance and have a Cat-scan (I think). I spent 12 hours in the hospital- total bill $10,000+. As I was in college, I was still on my parent's insurance and out of pocket costs were less than $1000.

 

Even perfectly healthy people can have emergencies. Unless you are a millionaire and can really afford $100,000+ hospital bills, I would never go without health insurance.

That's what medicaid is for. I was 18 when my son was born, and no insurance of course. There were complications and he spent 3 weeks in a childrens hospital. $50,000. A lot of money 25 years ago. Heck, a lot of money now! State picked it up. Socialized health care has been around for decades, folks. But then, that's not what this thread is about, is it?

I agree with Yazoo. We've only been to Jamaica once and did Dunn's River Falls and it remains one of our favorite excursions. It is not to be missed.

We skipped our last one, first time ever. We woulda gone if they had come to our cabin and hassled us, but they didn't, so we didn't.

I cruise with a collapsible cooler for the cabin, but I could take it ashore, even have the room steward fill it with ice for me. Sang's Supermarket is a short walk from the Cruise Facility, but I'd probably pay a couple bucks extra for my taxi to stop (it's on the way) while I ran in to purchase a case of beer for about $16. (Actually beer isn't mentioned, just 'drinks').

 

$16 divided by 24 = $.67 each, about a dollar less per beer than your bucket.

 

I'm not saying that I would do it, or that you would do it, but kujobie should be aware of the options.

And Kujobie has done it. Last time we were there, a few years ago, I got a 12 pack of Heineken for about $5 from the same store you're talking about.. When we did it, we were on the way back to the ship, but now that I know we can bring it with us to the beach, I may do just that. We also bring a collapsible cooler when we cruise. Thanks again for the info. You're the best!

Pedro's on the clothing optional side and Club Orient are both cooler friendly.

 

Remember to take your towel when you go up to the Perch for 2-4-1 happy hour.

 

You should be feeling very comfortable in your own skin by then. :)

No, Club Orient doesn't have staff to serve drinks/food on the beach.

 

Pedro's, immediately adjacent, and in fact, between the taxi drop and Club Orient itself, does offer that service.

 

In either case, just find a chair that you like and settle in. The Beach Boy will find you and collect the fee at some point. At Orient, check that the chair doesn't have a tag on the top bar, indicating that it has bee reserved.

 

Club Orient is up to about $20 for two chairs and an umbrella. I believe that Pedro's is still $15 and it includes two drinks.

Could we bring a cooler with our own drinks to Club Orient? Would that be tacky? I appreciate the info. We're like the OP, never done the nudism thing before but want to try. But not sure if I'd be comfortable walking back and forth for drinks. Kinda just want to park it in a lounge chair and relax.

Does Club O have servers that will bring you drinks on the beach? May be a dumb question. I assume they do. And how does the chair rental work? Do you just find vacant chairs and someone will come around to collect the money?

Tortuga Rum from the Caymans used to be not available in the states, but I guess it now is though it's hard to find/limited. Best rum I've ever had. We always bring home at least 6 bottles. It's also sold on the ships so you don't have to be going to the Caymans.

Lots of good info on this thread. Thanks everyone. On our last cruise there we went to trunk bay and will be doing it again in 4 months. Of all the beaches I have been to, it is one of the most beautiful. We will be in port from 10am-8pm. How late do the ferries run? Should I worry about taking the 5:00 ferry if it's the last one of the day? I'm guessing traffic will be bad at that time of day on the ferry and on St. Thomas when we get back.

My main question is, if you didn't have a kagillion bagillion dollars to spend, what would you have cut out, besides the couples massage? We've done that in the past before and thought it wasn't worth it either..

Sorry to hijack the thread, but has anybody seen Music Network or know if they are still playing. These guys blew my mind, and I have been lucky enough to be on 3 cruises they were on. They played a lot of hard classic rock and did a 30 minute medley of Queen songs which included Bohemian Rhapsody in it's entireity. If you're familar with the song, you can't even imagine 4 Filipinos, who can barely speak English, being able to play it without hacking it. I've never even seen a cover band attempt it, but these guys made it seem easy. My jaw was on the floor. Best cover band I have seen, on land or sea.

My Fav one is the one who waits on me.....lol

Wow, it's a very thin rope they are walking on then, they (CCL) are on record as saying compensation will be offered and now they,if we are to believe the poster (trying to be balanced and fair here) they are refusing to offer any compensation, it really does seem like a matter for an attorney to handle.

When did they go on record offering compensation? Did I miss that? I've tried to keep up with this thread.. I honestly think it is a losing battle to threaten lawsuit. We are talking a couple hundred bucks. And, as I said, technically, the cabin is a 9A. They haven't promised anything that they can't deliver.

Yep - I would not make final payment unless you are willing to accept something as simple as a bottle of champagne as compensation. You never know what it will be. They may surprise all of us, and then again not.

 

At least in my case, I am pleased - and know that the suite I switched to from 8466 will be of ample size. With as many shoes (think 1 suitcase!) that Cheryl brings, among other stuff - we need plenty of elbow room!

I'm curious to know how long it will be before that cabin is booked by some unsuspecting schlepp who isn't wise to the ways of Cruise Critic.. He'll be surprised that it is still available, then he will be surprised again when he sees it.. :)

Well......they are already saying that 8473 is a 9A - but without a wrap :rolleyes:.

Technically, 8473 is a 9A. And 8469 is a really big 8C.. I know which cabin I'm booking..
