  1. I find them hit and miss also, however I will always plan on going to the first one. A couple of years ago on the Epic there was a group of about 15 of us who met up every night and the last night everyone met for dinner. The following year there were only a few and they were bitter queens so I only went a few times then avoided them I am there to relax and not wanting the drama

  2. I usually cruise as a solo and always met people to dine with. If there are GLBT meetings hit the first one and most times you end up hanging out with a great group of guys who tend to eat together. With the "eat when you want" service you go whenever you want and if you show up alone they will ask if you want to be seated with a large table. The only time I sometimes eat alone is if I make a reservation at a specialty restaurant before I get onboard and see what's going on, I now usually just wait until I see what the landscape is before hitting them.

  3. Just curious, how do you like the larger Breakaway class ship? The solo cabins are fantastic, but I found it just too big and prefer to search for a regular cabin at a good price in the smaller Gem (because cruising out of NYC is so convenient!)

I was on the Epic 2 years ago and had a great time, enjoyed the entertainment. Last year I was on the much smaller Sun and although I had a good time the ship was showing it's age. Being a NYer small ship entertainment is a bit of a letdown and when your going Solo, evening entertainment is higher on the list. In all the years I have been causing I only once sailed out of NY for a Canadian cruise..

  4. Just found this thread so thought I would pipe up. I am in Manhattan. I got my partner interested in cruising 10 years ago after many years of not cruising because he did not like his last outing. He passed away a few years ago but I have been trying to make the annually feb trip doing solos. With that I have been cruising on NCL due to the single rates. Next Feb I am on the Escape to get away from the cold. I usually just do a little shopping but stay onboard most of the time.

  5. I agree you have to get the 9am ferry to and the 2pm back. To anyone who likes to snorkel at Trunk here's a tip...go all the way to the left side of the beach, I have found that this is the best snorkeling on the whole beach. The closer to the trail/guard station the less you will see anything while snorkeling.

  6. Well, I recently pre purchased the signature trio (Cagneys, Le Bistro, and La Cucina plus a free bottle of wine as long as you reserve Cagneys for the first night) for $57. I didn't know about this new deal at the time and don't know if they would let me switch. Still, I think I'd just as soon stick to the trio for now and "rough it" in the free venues the rest of the time. I'm already a fan of the UBP, and plan on buying that for the cruise. My only concern is that this will cause a downgrade of service and quality in the main dining rooms. I know that many feel that quality has ALREADY gone down in those areas. I don't really have enough prior experience to judge myself, but I've so far found them to be perfectly fine. Maybe not as good as the fancier spots, but just as good as many mid level restaurants you'll visit on shore. We shall see how this all works out. It's all pretty interesting though! :)

I also pre-purchased for $57, and with pre-purchsing all of the other venues it came to $117. This only leaves 1 night open and since I will also do Cirque, it does not pay for me to make the change.

  7. As Demonyte said POA is a different market(one of the very few cruise ships that travel it's entire cruise within US waters and therefore having to comply with different rules) so you can't compare apples to bananas.

As to the upgrade fairy...I have been a GTY many times and only a few times have been upgraded, and mostly within the cabin type I had chosen. example is going for the lowest price Balcony. You won't get a cabin lower than that, so no inside or windows, however you may get a room next to a service elevator nobody wants. And there is a chance you might get a small bump(balcony obstructed to low level unobstructed view). I would always take a GTY cabin I would be happy with and not expect any more than that. I have booked through NCL/Agents/and third party sites using GTY and had not any more or less "upgrades" with any of them.
