  1. If you want a truly amazing turtle experience look up Cliff Sharker. He will have you at the turtles 30 minutes before any other tour. That's by far my most favorite excursion ever.

    Sounds great!

Can you provide more details ... which tour did you select (seems they have 3 choices)?

It looks like we'd need to take a cab to Cliff Sharker, there and back. How long and how much ... and any issues with getting a return cab?

Thanks for the quick response, btw. You've been very helpful to me and others by sharing your knowledge and experience.

I wonder if I could ask another question...

We are on AOS this coming June (Antigua, Barbados, and the 3 St.'s) and are wondering what currencies we need to bring, particularly for cabs and/or tipping on excursions. Or, does everyone accept credit cards and US$?

  3. I didn't remember paying that much for Blue Lagoon... had to look it up. $84/ea last year. Felt cheaper as the kids were free. So figure about $40/ea. This was actually one of our favorite beach days we have done on a cruise. We thought the island was awesome with the most perfect swimming area (the lagoon) and enjoyed the boat ride also (kids loved the boat ride).

At some point, the cost becomes irrelevant. What's $40/$80 for a beach day on vacation, really? Mind you, it included lunch and transportation also. But yes, I do think the cruise line private island is great for beach days. We did a recent Carnival cruise that stopped at HMC and Grand Turk - both we perfect beach days, totally free.

The Blue Lagoon has to be one of the best excursions we've ever done, a big hit with DW and our girls.

  4. Hope this is the right place to post this question:

we're sailing AOS on June 3 out of Puerto Rico (yay!) and will likely be at the pier before noon. I've read that some check-in, go to the Windjammer for lunch, then get back off the ship? We've never done this before, didn't know it was possible, but like the idea of being able to spend some time sightseeing (luggage-free) in Puerto Rico before the ship departs that evening, which is at 8:30 PM (?). I've even read that you can get back on the ship after the muster (which I've read is at 5:45 PM?), and just do this at some other time the next day (hopefully this wouldn't inhibit our ability to do an excursion in St. Maarten that Sunday).

Can someone more experienced than me confirm that this is possible?

  5. I am traveling to Antigua as part of a cruise in early June. Am evaluating options for each port, and this is one of them so I read your post and responses with interest.

I also just found this application for a free day pass at Sandals:

Obviously I have no idea if it's current and/or still valid. Does anyone else know?

  6. We are thinking about taking the light rail from the airport to Westlake and having the hotel shuttle pick us up there. I've read that is it kind of a long haul from baggage claim to the light rail station, however. Would it be manageable if each of us had one suitcase (spinner wheels) and one daypack/carry on? To be clear, we are fairly good walkers (one senior, and one "not there yet"!), but luggage adds another dimension.

My spouse and I are both 55; we each had a carry-on with a shoulder strap and a large suitcase with wheels. It is a long circuitous but well marked walk around the SeaTac parking lot to the Light Rail station, but it was no problem for us (we didn't need to rent a cart).

  7. Thanks for the info about public transit! Is light rail different from the monorail?

Yes, the Light Rail is from the airport to the Westlake station for $3/person. From there, call the Hyatt Place and their shuttle can pick you up:

The monorail is from the Worlds Fair that built the Space Needle as well. It originates near the Space Needle and goes to Westlake for $2.25 each way:

    Hope this helps.

  8. We stayed in the Hyatt Place Seattle/Downtown (used points, so it was free). Very conveniently located to the Space Needle and all of the things around it. They have a shuttle and picked us up at the Westgate station from the light rail, a cheap $3/ride from the airport. They will also shuttle you around town - when available - but it's a walking city. We actually walked from Pike Place Market back to the hotel rather than waiting for the shuttle one day. They have a great breakfast! They also have a contracted shuttle that only costs $8 to Pier 91 on the day of your embarkation, so it's a good deal.
