The thing I miss most whenever I travel is my adjustable air bed. Having inflammatory arthritis, it is great for the joints.  But I love to travel and I can survive for awhile without it.

Yep, I am sorely (pun intended) going to miss my memory foam mattress topper. I’m tempted to buy one for the cruise!

Also gonna miss going braless. 🙂

    and having to wear makeup

and, weirdly enough, my own toilet. I hate using public toilets and even the ones in the cabin feel public to me.

The current FAS excursion promo is per excursion, not per port. So even if you don't cancel the clamshell you should get the $50 on another one (etc., etc.,)

Of course you have to read the terms of the credit for your booking (and if not US it also may be different)

thanks! I read the fine print and yep, it’s per excursion. That helps tremendously 🙂

  3. It looks like the prices differ between the generic excursion listing on NCL’s page and the excursion listing for your specific cruise.

I just checked ours. The clamshell rental on NCL’s generic excursion page is $48.40 CAD but when going through my booked cruise, the clamshell rental is $62 CAD. sorry I can’t see it in USD but it shows how they are different prices. If the loyalty status came into play, going through the booked cruise where I’m logged in to my account would be lower but it’s not, so loyalty discount doesn’t come into play here. Not sure why it’s higher for the booked cruises other than maybe it’s based on length of cruise. Mine’s a 10 day. Although that doesn’t make sense either.

  4. I feel for your brother. I too had back surgery that left my left leg gibbled only mine is in the pins and needles stage 24/7 because of nerve damage.

For the narcotics I would make sure I took the prescription bottle and only take what he thinks he will need. He doesn’t need an overzealous security inspector absconding with a large quantity and leaving your brother without the relief he needs!  Oh and hide your narcotics in your cabin safe instead of the bathroom  (or wherever he will store his meds). That’s where I put mine.

As for the excursion requirements, as others have said I think your brother is SOL in that regard. But even if he could slip by unnoticed, is it really worth the risk? Most of the excursions that have the health issue warnings do inherently come with potential risks. That said, there are some that are eyeroll-worthy. Like I wasn’t allowed to float down a lazy River cause I’m diabetic. Really?

I do wish your brother tons of fun on his first cruise. There will still be plenty he can do 🙂

You'll get the current version of the perks. I lost one specialty restaurant dinner, but the lower fare was worth far more than the value of the dinner. anything you paid for will carry over .

35% off each of the first two guests is the same as 70% off the second guest.

thanks. I know the 35%/70% ends up the same. Was just mentioning it as that’s the only “difference” between the FAS perks. Everything else is the same so I won’t be losing out on anything.

I was more concerned with whether NCL agents will just adjust your booking or have to cancel and rebook, especially since the FAS perks are technically different.

  6. For those getting the price drop, are you having to cancel and rebook or are they just adjusting the price? Ours has gone down about $340 total. It’s a slightly different perk list in that 2nd guest is 70% off vs 35% off each guest. We also have prepaid gratuities and purchased a dining package in addition to the included dining perk.

if they cancel and rebook, would all those add one have to be cancelled and rebooked too or just applied to new booking?

  7. Hate to be a "fun sponge" but Bonaire beaches are rocky.

On the positive side ... absoluately amazing snorkeling there.

Where would be your top pick for a beach to snorkel at without too much difficulty entering from the beach!

  8. For those of you who have done this, how long of a walk is it to get down the beach to where you can cut across the coal reef to start your drift snorkel?

And approx. How long did it take to drift back to the beginning?

My hubby and I love snorkeling, but I have mobility issues and long walks can be difficult. Looking to find out how big of an undertaking that walk is. Thanks.

  9. Yes

    No.

The Paradise is always rolled out as an example of a failed attempt and "proof" by all the naysayers. I firmly believe, however, that it was just ahead of its time. People weren't ready to embrace the non-smoking aspect of it. But since then, most public areas, bars, restaurants in North america have gone smoke-free with the rest of the world not far behind. I think if this was attempted again, now, it would be a much more successful endeavour.

As to the belief that non-smokers don't gamble.... based on the current set up, most don't. Not because they don't want to, but because the casinos on most ships are so heavily laden with smoke, they steer clear of the casino altogether. Remove that smoke, and you will likely see a much different scenario.

  10. Even though it is freestyle, if you find a wait staff you like in the MDR, you can always ask to be seated in their section. Then you get the familiarity of the wait staff, with the freedom to dine on your schedule.

Go to o'sheehans for that late night craving! Better than the waiting for room service and avoid the room service charge.

Not ncl specific, but regarding excursions.... if it's your first cruise, I always advise booking through the cruiseline. Yes, it is more expensive, but for a first cruise, you don't need that added stress. Once you have a cruise under your belt and are familiar with navigating your way at cruise ports, then opt for less expensive local excursions.

  11. The 17.95 on is made with Ciroc. It has been reported on the boards that YMMV regarding bartender's going off of the list and substituting to make it compliant with the UBP. Usually a tip will take care of things. A worse case scenario is to try a different bar to get what you want accomplished. Just remember that Grey Goose is covered under the UBP, while the flavored versions are not. Makes about as much sense as charging 17.95 for a Dark n Stormy, but it's been reported that the Bermuda authorities had a conniption about it and the price was reduced.

On the Escape in aug/Sept, we put the UBP to good use. Here were the things we experienced:

    - every bar we went to the bartenders were willing to go off menu and make whatever drink we wanted.

    - we had flip cards for drinks. There were a couple drinks they couldn't make, only because they lacked the ingredients. Otherwise, they made them.

    - several times, we gave them a tip and a challenge. Make something bkue, frozen, no pineapple nor coconut. A couple ladies in the atrium bar and cowboy in the 5 o'clock somewhere bar were Gung ho to do it.

    - we tried ordering >$15 drinks substituting for a non top shelf liquor. No joy.

    - ordering a vodka/cranberry gets you a Russian standard vodka, but if you say Grey Goose by name, that's what you get.

-word to the wise... never ever ever order a Grass Clippings from Tobacco Road! Ever. Lol

-lastly..there were 3 of us in the party. We had to show our ubp cards only once at each new bar. The rest of the cruise, they'd take 1 of our cards and ring all 3 drinks in. Also we would sometimes get drinks and shots at the same time. 1 card.

-Ok one more thing... if you keep ordering WooWoo shots from cowboy at 5 o'clock, he starts turning those shots into full size plastic glass size!

  12. We took a tour around the island... there were five of us and he took four more with us...

3 hour tour of the island plus 1 hour at the beach.

Again we did go outside the port and got one... after I spoke to the to two local police to make sure they were legit and okay to be with...

The prices were much cheaper then the markets. We did get the necklace for 3/5 as the market wanted 5 for one...

The little baskets at the market was 10. for one and I paid 20 for 6 and 20 for this huge one. Along with 5 different pint side pure extracts for 20.

The baskets were very nice with Grenada weaved in it...

The necklace has a very nice scent.. the lady told us you can bring the scent back if you boil it water for 10-15 minutes let it dry .. and the scent is back.

I put one in the "mud room" can smell cruise every time I come in the house.

I think I missed it, but where was this market located that was so much cheaper than by the cruise port? Thanks.

  13. Thanks for the quick reply. I was looking forward to sitting up there but not in a suite. Good to know the starboard side is most likely available.

Excellent live "review". Painted a wonderful picture of what life is like on the Dawn throughout the day.
