"...since about 40-50% of folks said they don't plan on taking one." They way that now but when the vaccine becomes available and they are turned away from venues they may change their minds.

If half the population won't take one, the venues restricting them will die.  Also, for those in the US, people who are covered under the ADA and do not get a vaccine can sue a business that doesn't make a reasonable accommodation for them.

This covid 19 is not going away with people just wearing masks & social distancing ,the reason is as long as  there are people who  are infected they can spread the  disease quickly & infect many thousands to millions

It's not going away, period.  It will, however, likely weaken with time.  "Flatten the curve."  Oh, wait, that was just to get started.  Pshaw.

Thus ,until there is real safety on any cruise ship ,it is highly unlikely that we , the older generation would risk our lives on any cruise ship .

This is true for some of the "older generation," but I certainly would say it's probably not the majority. Is it especially more risky to be on a cruise ship than to be driving somewhere, smoking, eating donuts, harboring a grudge, not exercising?  Everything carries risk; you choose which ones to take.  (Anyone have data on deaths from cruise ship COVID? Not interested in "cases.")

  4. We have three fully paid for, and another awaiting final payment.  Looking at some today that are good values.  However, since Princess will not confirm what "mandatory health screenings including pre-travel testing for COVID-19" means (I've emailed and called), we may be rearranging our travel plans for next year to be stateside.  Hoping not, as 2021 was supposed to be our Year of the Cruise.

The ultimate cure is the acceptance & adminstration of the  covid 19 vaccines  to not only here in the USA but through out the entire world

The previous post was clearly a reference to the President.  Are we reading the same thread?

BTW, most Americans are NOT going to take the initial vaccine, and a substantial number will never take it.

    "Forty-one percent of those surveyed would not get the coronavirus vaccine if the federal government required it versus 50% of those who said they would."  <<--That part concerns me;

  6. Just got a new note from Princess.  Waiting to hear clarification.  One letter reads screening questionnaire; the website says " pre-travel testing for COVID-19."  No specifics there.  IF I get an answer, I'll post it.  We have 3 scheduled for next year, with a 4th holding.

I got a survey last week (undoubtedly sponsored by one of the cruiselines) asking questions regarding the nasal swab, how likely would I cruise if required, how much would I be willing to pay for one, what would my backup vacation be, etc.  Anyone else get something like this?  We have cruised this year or will be cruising next year with Princess, NCL, RCCL, and Carnival.  Just curious who commissioned the survey.

Doesn't sound like the kind of vacation we would enjoy. But, if some are willing to cruise within these guidelines that would provide cruise lines with some revenue for a year or so.

Those are RCCL recommendations.  Princess' are, at this point, less intrusive.  https://www.princess.com/plan/cruise-with-confidence/cruise-health/

Do what works for you.  I wouldn't want to cruise under the restrictive RCCL recommendations, especially the masks, required testing on your own dime, and "approved" excursions only.  But if you're happy with those, have a great trip!

imo you are correct . Masks  should be required to wear them by any one on the ship .The better answer is mass inoculations before this virus can mutate once again & then the quick test for every one who arrives at the port to board .Further ,only cruise led excursions with strict protocols  should be allowed until this virus is defeated around the world

You should probably book with RCCL, then.  It appears Princess is going to take more of a Personal Responsibility tack, focusing mainly on the crew: https://www.princess.com/plan/cruise-with-confidence/cruise-health/ with pre-board screening for passengers, temperature checks, and crew-served meals.

Choose what works best for your own level of comfort.  For us, we just booked another Princess cruise for May (only put the deposit though in case they change their protocols), and we will be breathing freely!

Both the wife and I maintain our weight during the cruise.  First rule is two meals a day.  We tend to sleep in late and usually miss breakfast unless a port is involved.  Second rule is 30 fast walk minutes on the treadmill everyday.

Last rule watch the snacks at most 1 to 2 drinks a day.

We usually lose or maintain, but we take the stairs 2 up, 4 down.  More than that and I'll wait for the elevator 😉

eta: I wish that the cruise lines would come out and say what they're going to positively do so that we can cancel if needed.  Next one is January -- plane, hotel, excursions booked, cruise fully paid for.  My fear is that they spring requirements on us that weren't in the original contract AFTER the refund date.

It’s not the right thing to take risks and become infected and then expose healthcare facilities and staff to CV. If you’re willing to die at home, then have at the “right thing”.

We're obviously not going to agree, and you should do what your research and comfort level tell you.

Here's a start for you, from the NIH whose conclusion is "In summary, all the 455 contacts were excluded from SARS-CoV-2 infection and we conclude that the infectivity of some asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 carriers might be weak." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32513410/

The risk of contracting COVID from casual contact is negligible, according to the CDC.  "[COVID] spreads mainly among people who are in close contact (within about 6 feet) for a prolonged period.”

You should stay home if you are that worried, are sick, or have a BMI>40,  We'll be staying home, too, if the cruise lines require us to mask up for the majority of our trip.  Because there is no consensus whatsoever, adults need to make their own choices and deal with the consequences of those choices.

if you are trying to find a cruise line that will not require masks, you are going to be home for a while.  if CDC approves this- it will apply to all the lines.  I do not understand why people just can't follow the damm rules.  We would be working our way out of this mess if people would just do the right thing

Maybe.  We have three already paid for for 2021, but will see if these are enforced, and instead get refunds and spend our travel money in states not requiring the damned things that don't work anyway.  It's the distancing that is working; casual contact doesn't spread it.

ABCNews just reported that 94% of COVID-related deaths are from people who already had morbidity conditions.  Doubtful those folks would be cruising anyway.  If your BMI is over 40, STAY HOME.  That's the biggest risk factor.

Your characterization of "the right thing" is misleading, at best.  The "right thing" is for adults to do their own research, and then suffer the consequences of their own choices.  Your choice is obviously different than mine; you bear those consequences.

So you like advise from your doctor but a politician to make the judgement? I'll take my doctors advise and use their recommendations and leave politics out of..It is my life is at stake.

The thing is, doctors don't agree.  My cardiologist says masks do more harm than good, especially for vulnerable adults.  So, yes, I'm taking her advice.  More importantly, I'm a grown-up and can make my own decisions.  Let me do my own research, give me the opinions of my own health care professionals, and then let me take the consequences of my own decision.  Just as someone who decides in the opposite way takes the consequences for their decision.

Looking forward to reduced capacity as well!

I don't think you'll have to worry about that.  The more restrictions, the fewer people will be cruising that line.

My question is, we've already pre-paid for a cruise in the fall and are not going to go if we have to wear masks.  What's the best way to get a full refund rather than credit (since I doubt we'll be using RCCL any more.)

Actually chair hogging can be fixed.  Put a solar powered RFID chip on every chair.  Reserve it with your app/phone/wrist band.  Light turns red.  If you run to your cabin for a forgotten book, you are fine.  if you walk away from the pool deck for say four hours, (LOL), your reservation expires- the light turns green.  Your stuff goes to the return table.

I just move their stuff to the foot of another chair.  Rarely has someone confronted me, to which I innocently ask if they're sure this was their chair because I've been sitting in it for more than an hour.

  15. I see a lot of these up on auction sites for a deep discount.  Has anyone had success buying them and using them?  The terms allow for transfer, so it's not shady.  Just wondering if it's worth getting.  We have a summer 2021 cruise with a deposit that it would be fantastic to save $$$ by using the certificates to finish the payment.  Alternately, I wouldn't mind booking another.

    Thanks!

(Please don't PM me with an offer since that is against CC rules.)

  16. Looks like RCCL, Celebrity, and NCL don't want people over 70.  Medical forms need to be filled out, with NCL requiring them to be within 7 days of embarkation (that cuts out most with any type of group health).

How many over 70 do NOT suffer from one chronic illness or another?  Diabetes makes you ineligible to sail??

  17. Some good news -- the CDC page is showing that the pandemic is on the threshold of being declassified as such.

"Based on death certificate data, the percentage of deaths attributed to pneumonia, influenza or COVID-19 (PIC) decreased from 9.0% during week 25 to 5.9% during week 26, representing the tenth week of a declining percentage of deaths due to PIC. The percentage is currently at the epidemic threshold but will likely change as more death certificates are processed, particularly for recent weeks."

Also, notice that they're now including pneumonia and influenza into the same pool -- and it's still declining.  The death rate is the key indicator.  Check your county's stats here: infection2020.com.  Use the 'deaths' and 'log' and 'past 14 days' tabs.
