  1. Nessie, Did you find this map already for hiking in Skagway?

    http://skagway.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Skagway-Trail-Map.pdf

There are many reviews out there for the various trails...TripAdvisor and many hiking trail specific websites...as well as many blogs if you search for the different trail names.

Thanks! I don't think I've seen that. I've found some other info on it but it's been a while since I've looked at it. There are a lot of great options.

Last year we ended up doing quite a big hike unexpectedly. Didn't have good shoes, or water with us. Will be nice to be a bit more prepared this time around

  2. Our little backpacks arrived today!

I'm very happy with this purchase. We took mine on a short hike today. Only carried 2 wide mouthed Nalgene bottles...my phone...the car keys. Just wanted to see how it was.

I was wearing short sleeves and before I adjusted the straps, the plastic adjuster was hitting my arms below the short sleeve length. The pack was riding low...so a quick adjustment there and all was well. DH took a turn just to see how the straps were. The wide straps are nice. The pack feels like it weighs nothing and is very easy to wear.

I would say that the only thing that was noticeable is that is was quite warm this afternoon and the lack of air flow on my back was the only way that I really noticed this cute little pack.

We opted to just get two smaller packs. I was using a string bag at home to make comparisons to the online measurements. I might wish that we ordered bigger ones...but still undecided on that. The pack measurement seems to be the bottom and then it is rounded and narrower at the top of the pack. I'm liking the size...I think it will easily carry the things you want for a simple day...rain jacket(s), water, etc. but not much else, which is appropriate and makes for happy touring.

I got the purple. DS got the gray. The gray is much darker than I thought it would be from the online picture. But it is still gray...no hint of black. I got purple and that was originally out of stock but suddenly it somehow shipped at the same time as the gray. I like the design on the bag. There is a bit of a pattern on the outside that I like.

It's pretty simple...which is great. It's not waterproof. But it's resistant and easy to use...so. Thumbs up!

Glad they worked out for you! And you got a test run in!

That's one thing i need to do is plan where we are going to hike in skagway. Sounds like there are lots of options.

I've slowly got clothes comming in the mail. A few things have worked but most seems to be going back or getting exchanged for different sizes.

  3. Nordstrom has free shipping and returns, but I have a store about 50 miles from home (closer to my work) so I often return in person. I like them for shoes but my store is small so not the biggest selection - ordering online is just easier.

We travel often in cool/cold/wet places & times - I couldn't live without a raincoat or three ;-)

I tried target swimsuits this year - none of the 4 I ordered worked out. So I went to Costco and got another miraclesuit ;-)

Costco always has great stuff! I am there every 2 weeks but never let myself look at the clothes. I'll have to wander over there next time.

So I may not have to worry about as many clothes now. My husband went ahead and ordered me a bunch of stuff! He is usually right on with what he picks out for me so we will see in the next few days.

I'm also thinking the cruise will be a good excuse to get some new makeup too.

I probably should have a raincoat since I like in the Seattle area but I never have. Dont ever even use an umbrella. I'm immune to the rain at this point.

I'm enjoying hearing about all the different cruise lines everyone is going on. I've only sailed Royal and Celebrity so it's really cool to hear about what goes on in the other lines.

  4. That is a cute daypack!!

Husband has a backpack as his airplane personal item, so we'll have that if we want it. Might bring a drybag too, esp if we're able to book a whale watching tour. We have a few different sizes from sailing trips.

Nessie - what kind of clothing are you looking for? Nordstrom half yearly sale ends today - I ordered a top, a cardigan, and shoes. Have to bring the shoes back - they're cute & have a REALLY comfortable insole (softwalks) but they are just a smidge too narrow on my foot box and I'm afraid they won't stretch. If you're looking for raincoats, the REI garage (online) has some really lovely options at good prices. I'm sure other places will be having sales throughout the summer as well, have to look again to see when your cruise is...

Really I just need some cute casual tops. And a new fleece zip up. I'd love a new pair of shoes or 2 haha. I've got some new jeans coming so hopefully they will fit. I think Ive got enough dressy clothes so I can get by without anything new there. I have hiking boots but not a rain coat. If it's raining so bad I'd actually need one I'm not getting off the ship. We are going in July. Last July it was about 60 degrees in the Alaskan ports and only had rain while sailing at night.

Oh I never shop at nordstrom's, I should take a look. With 2 little kids I dont really get a chance to go out shopping and rely on Amazon for most things. Can't beat the 2 day shipping and free returns.

And I've got to do the dreaded bathing suit shopping........[emoji30] . Because a soak in the hot tub with some champagne is an Alaska cruise must for me!

  5. I'm having the hardest time trying to figure out what purse I want to bring (really, what type of bag - not even the specific bag) Argh! Normally I use a lesportsac hobo for travel - lightweight, can wear crossbody, fits what I want. But I'm not sure it will fit what I want for shore excursions in Alaska. Last trip I brought my ameribag sling bag - it fit my rain coat and water bottle. I still have it but haven't used in ages (comfort levels changed? Not sure what happened). I know a small water bottle will fit in the hobo, but not a coat if I take off layers. And I really don't want to bring a full backpack (I know I'll put too much in it!) On the ship, I have a Tumi wristlet I'll use for dinner (I use it as a wallet in my daybag and it works for dinners because it'll fit lip balm, key, phone (for camera)) I have time to decide - but not that much time!
You just reminded me to add a new purse to my list. I need something smaller than I took last year. Really I'd like something to use on and off the ship that is just big enough for my phone (only used for pictures/videos) some chapstick and small wallet. If I need more than that I make my husband wear a small backpack. He can carry my water for me haha.

Spent a few hours last night looking for clothes online and didn't really find a thing.

  6. So what is everyone doing for night time attire? Do you do formal dress on formal nights? Or do you plan to keep it more casual?

We enjoy getting dressed up for formal night (well I do and hubby goes along with it). I never have the chance or occasion normally so I enjoy it. Formal I'll go for a cocktail type dress so nothing too fancy. And for other nights I usually will wear a casual dress and heels.

  7. Yep, despite having an entire tote of travel toiletries, I ordered some new eye cream from the Nordstrom half-yearly sale because it came with a travel set of things that looked fun. Husband says I have a problem ;p

[to be fair, I did need new eye cream!]

I see nothing wrong with this! Haha

  8. But we did hot tub frequently, either at night at the Solarium tubs, or when it was reeaalllly chilly, in the hot tub in the fitness center.

Thanks for wonderful review! We were on Explorer last July and are headed back this July. A question about the hot tubs, how was the temperature of the water. We thought last year they were not warm enough. Other people agreed. And this was a port day when it was about 60 degrees. Just curious. And we didn't know there was one in the fitness center so that will be nice!

  9. Last July in our Alaska ports it was about 60 and thankfully no rain. We were pretty comfortable in light layers. Not sure we even wore coats. But we saw some people walking around in full puffy coats, scarves, hats, and gloves. Had a bit of a laugh about it but I figured they either were from somewhere warm or headed to an excursion where it would be colder.

I found out on deck while the ship was moving where I was the coldest. I need to find a lightweight fleece to layer to take this time.

Yes I love hearing the reviews start to come in! I also love watching cruise videos on YouTube. It gets addictive haha.

Hoping to do a bit of cruise shopping this weekend so hopefully I can find a few things. I got a little too giddy when I bought some facewash yesterday and it came with a travel sized version haha.

  10. We are about a month away from flying to Seattle for our Alaskan cruise. I have the clothes rack in the guest bedroom and slowly figuring out what to bring. Our cruise is 14 days with 3 days pre-cruise in Seattle. Packing for 17 days is a little challenging especially since we are flying.

So far I am bringing 3 pairs of Eddie Bauer Ripstop Cargo pants, 3 pairs of shorts, 4 long sleeve knit tops, 4 short sleeve knit tops, 2 dresses, 2 lightweight tech fabric 3/4 zip pullovers, 1 3/4 zip fleece pullover, and my Patagonia puffer jacket. I pre-purchased the unlimited laundry package, so I am good to go there.

I am also bringing waterproof gloves, a poncho, and a knitted cap. I learned my lesson last time in Alaska, always have waterproof gloves. My Asolo hiking shoes are also coming since they are waterproof.

    Lisa

Oh I love the clothes rack in another room for packing! I'll be getting my clothes rack out soon. Makes packing so much easier! Wow you have a long cruise! I'd probably end up with too much stuff because I tend to overpack. What line are you going on?

  11. This will be our 11th. Last year we had oasis booked but then ended up moving so we cancelled it and were going to wait. But 2 weeks before my husband was like this is our 10th anniversary let's go so Alaska was an easy choice for us haha. So we are 10 years apart!

That is so great you can all go together. Oh boy I can't even imagine my kids off to college, my oldest is kindergarten age this year and that's too much for me to handle [emoji22]

  12. Wow that sounds amazing!! What a wonderful experience this will be for you and your family! Yes very important to be able to go with the flow while cruising. That's actually what I like about it. Do as little or as much as you want. Hopefully you will have good weather. It should at least be warm for the Vancouver part of your trip.

Packing will probably be a little trickier since you are camping after but it sounds like you've got a good plan.

I will say it's nice not having a weight or bag limit since I dont have to fly. I wish more cruises went out of Seattle. Right now we can only go in the summer because so my mom can watch the kids for us. They are 2 and 5 so no cruises for them yet. (Well took my oldest when she was 15 months but other family was there) This is mom and dad's time to relax! And it's our anniversary trip. Plus they love having grandma come to stay. She may spoil them a bit.

Yes trip is round trip from Seattle. Its pretty neat to sail past familiar landscape too.

Victoria is really pretty. We are going to try and have tea somewhere this time. And take a taxi!

  13. Sounds like a great place to live! I love to walk around places like that.

Oh I like celebrity! I've only sailed once on the eclipse but it was a great ship. I am on royal Caribbean explorer for the 2nd time.

Yes there is always so much walking! Which is why you get to eat so much on a cruise haha. Last time we walked from the pier to downtown Victoria. Big mistake it was so far. And then we walked back! Not sure what we were thinking

One excursion I'd like to try is ziplining. I've never done that. I think I'm just used to doing my own thing. Usually we go to a beach for the day which isn't the same in Alaska. We did do the tram in Juneau and that was a lot of fun.

So we just have 2 Alaska stops, Juneau and skagway, and then Victoria. Where is everyone else going?

    And what are your excursions?

  14. So we didn't do any excursions the first trip and dont plan on any this one either. Yes I know it sounds crazy. But they are very expensive and for us we go for the ship and to relax. Plus Alaska is very similar to where I live or where we can drive to. But it is really beautiful there. I think we may do a hike or 2 if the weather is good.

I'm not sure what's going on with roll calls anymore but very strange.

You said you were trying to walk more, do you have a pedometer or smart watch that tracks your steps? I have fun with mine challenging myself to see how many steps I can get every day. It was also really fun to wear last cruise. I was amazed by how many flights of stairs we walked up.

I might have to get online and start looking for some cruise clothes tonight now!

What cruise lines and ships are you going on?

  15. Same here! I mean, I know it's a small ship, but there were people on my River Cruise from CC, surely someone else here is on my cruise? ;p

Booking 2 weeks out - that's quick! I'm torn - I like a last minute trip but I also like lots of time to research.....

Ya 2 weeks was not enough as I like to plan everything out. I feel like I'm already behind for this trip. I need to step it up and get my packing list in order. You sound like you have a good idea of what your bringing.

  16. I don't really have a question, just excitement! We've finally booked a trip for my husband's 50th (which was in April) - we're doing an Alaska cruise in September. This will be my 3rd Alaska cruise (2nd with husband) and my 4th trip to Alaska, so I'm pretty much set on what will be in my suitcase ;p

I'm doing my packing list (my ppt) a little differently right now (yeah, I totally start planning months in advance if I book months in advance! ) I have a couple pages with clothing ideas and I'm trying to set up my separates by use - on the ship, on land/excursions, and dinner. There will be overlap in the categories, which I am currently showing by overlap on my visual column barriers.

This will be an 11 day cruise, on Seabourn - our first time on that line! So we won't dress up too much. Husband will bring a sports coat (he would anyway, as a dinner warmth layer) and ties aren't required. I'm not entirely sure what I'll wear, but my norm is dresses for day or evening so I'll be fine.....

Oh what fun to do a packing list!!!

[so, whenever I order clothing, I save a photo of the piece of clothing in a file on my computer. For older items, I look online for photos of similar items or take a photo of my own piece. Then I can insert anything into my powerpoint to have a visual of the outfits....]

Oooh I have Alaska excitement too!!! And nobody on my roll call to talk to! Haha

Going in July for my 2nd Alaskan cruise. Went last July. Both on Royal Caribbean Explorer.

Packing this time will be a lot easier. Last year we booked about 2 weeks before the cruise left so there wasnt any time to plan. And I only took one pair of pants. I really wouldn't reccomend that!

Going to start some shopping soon (probably all on amazon). And getting toiletries together. I like to start packing super early.

We live about an hour away from Seattle so cruising Alaska is really convenient for us.

    Looking forward to chatting more!!

  17. You can walk thru town out to the Gold Rush Cemetary which is an interesting site. At the edge of the cemetary you'll see signs for a trail to Lower Reid Falls. About 4 mi RT altogether.

Before you go to the Cemetary, visit the yukon goldrush museum to get a better understanding of the history.

There is information on several trails on the town web site. Download the 'SKAGWAY TRAIL MAP' map for details.

    This sounds interesting thank you!

  18. Has anyone done any hiking in Skagway? We don't want to book any excursions or tours. More looking for an easy hike we can do on our own. I know there are a lot of options for trails. If you have done some where did you go? Are there any close to town?

    Thanks!
