I know CD Sue Denning joined the ship on 8th Nov. I was quite surprised that she flew out on Thursday ( learnt via her Instagram account) rather than sail on the TA from Southampton.

We were on the TA from Southampton. Bethany M. was scheduled to be the CD, but was replaced by Alejandro T. due to a medical issue. Sue Denning was on holiday and joined the ship as scheduled. Alejandro did a fantastic job on such short notice.....  The tree is dead. LOL..... I was on the  ship for fifteen days and 'that' never even came to mind as an issue.

We are home and after going full out or 4 weeks I crashed!

I went to Mood and found it expensive so just got 2 funky zippers . Bought 8 cuts of fabric at other shops, Some extra nice zippers and amazing buttons. I needed to go to see what it was all about. Happy to know that what I buy online in Canada is great both in quality and pricing. The zippers , buttons and other accessories rule the garment district.

Hi Pat and Bill!!! We are home as well.....Could you send me your email address as I must have misplaced the one you gave me the other night, yeah, who could believe I would do that!!! 😞 rlbeck71@gmail.com      Thanks friends!!!!!

Thank you all for responding.    Who knows when we will be back  so yes I think it would be a great way to see a nice bit of NZ.  Everyone of my friends that has traveled to NZ has raved about  it.    Now just have to come up with the money to pay for it.   Have about a year to save.

waltd: We are debating this option as well. Last time we did get into Milford Sound, spectacular, but crossing The Tasman was a 'real' adventure. Of course this time we will be coming in from Australia. Decisions to make.....:)

  4. Great survey! A couple of years ago we booked an OV GTY for a mere $50 more p/p than an inside for a 12 Night British Isles Cruise. Waited until about a week out to be assigned. Well, what a surprise it was, as Celebrity awarded us a C2 on the hump. Best room on the ship for our tastes. Travel agent said she had no input as to where we would end up. Other times we have gotten exactly what was promised, I.E. inside ended up with an inside. Usually good ones though, never a need to change. Very happy with Celebrity!!!

  5. Hmmmm.... Does this mean there is *any* chance of a Trollfjord entry in mid-March?

    That would be so special!

    :)

    GC

It's as SarniaLo has so perfectly described on other threads and on her blog, March is more like winter than Oct,. so I can't say for sure. In our case it was a decision that was made on the ship as to where we would go, it depended on weather conditions. We were extremely lucky on our sailing as it was about perfect, only a little rain and some choppy seas on the last day before Bergen. We also got a very nice sail around Torghatten at Bronnesund, to see the hole in the rock from both sides at sunset. Now that was cool. Good luck, and enjoy Hurtigruten! My wife and I have done a few cruises around the world, but this was at the very top, hands down. :)

  6. We were on MS Vesteralen R/T from Bergen during mid to late Oct 2016. We entered Trollfjord in daylight on the northbound leg and also at night on the southbound. It was as others have so nicely posted here, just magical. We even saw the Northern Lights during the nighttime entry. My wife says it was her favorite, by far......:)

  7. Chris: Thanks for posting this! I called my TA(s) and received $200 total of OBC added on to our upcoming B2B.....I only vaguely remembered this perk. Thanks again friend for reminding me!!!! Hope you and Marie had a great cruise.....:)

  8. This thread has been extremely helpful - thanks everyone!

I just booked my first Hurtigruten cruise, 7 January 2018, Finnmarken, round trip from/to Bergen. I have been to the North Cape 3x on Azamara during the summer months, but really wanted to do this trip in the darkness of winter for the snow, huskies, snowmobiles and of course the northern lights. I managed to book a 'suite' with a balcony which comes with both the water- and wine package. The Hurtigruten website also allowed me to book all excursions at the same time, which I did. Still 13 months to go, but I'm all set [emoji846]

Really looking forward to the husky ride, midnight snowmobile expedition and midnight concert at the Arctic cathedral. Very exciting!

    Cheers,

    Floris

Floris: You will love Hurtigruten! My wife and I did the 12-day R/T on MS Vesteralen from mid to the end of Oct. Kind of a quirky ship, but as SarniaLo has so well described here, there really is no bad ship in their fleet. Scenery is magnificent and the cuisine onboard was superb. We have sailed major cruise lines for the past fifteen years and we would not hesitate to go with Hurtigruten again.....enjoy!!!

  9. Sounds terrible and I'm so glad we didn't have to fly out! I've never had to undergo that many inspections anywhere! We took the train to Paris a few days later and never even showed our passports til we entered the UK!

Cathy: Good move!:) What I don't get is that with chip passports and being registered with the State Dept in the recent past, no criminal convictions at all, we are TSA pre-check and still additional screening for my wife who was very very fearful she would not make the flight. Not good. We love Europe. Not AMS tho..............

  10. What a great reason to avoid ship transfers. There's way too much waiting around for me and too many slow people who can disrupt my plans. And the sad thing is for the same or possibly less money you can get a private transfer or a shared one with others on your roll call where you don't have to go through the trauma of big scale transfers.

    Ugh!!!

Perhaps private transfers would have helped somewhat. I have my doubts. If you self-disembarked at say, 6:30 a.m., one might have had less of a crowd at Schipol. That would have been six plus hours before our departure. Still, by my count seven passport checks, one body scan and two pat downs, and also have your hand bag opened for inspection would still slowed you down considerably. My understanding is they had a job action by most of their port agent staff. Very horrible working conditions, rain and poor equipment selection for the huge task of moving 2800 passengers off and 2800 passengers on simultaneously with three cube van trucks and coaches. Celebrity staff was pressed into service to do tasks they knew little about or wanted to perform. No direction to our check in as promised. It was ugly! I think getting to the airport 3 hours before flight time should have been enough. Other considerations were bad weather, a youth holiday and at least one other cruise ship in port. In my opinion Amsterdam Cruise Terminal and Schipol Airport are not capable of doing this efficiently. The coach captain said so much to us.

  11. We disembarked Silhouette on 7/27/15 at 8:15 a.m. and it was horrendous. We had a 1:00 p.m. flight to Minneapolis and had purchased Celebrity transfers to Schipol. We barely made it to the gate as boarding had already commenced. Total disorganization on the part of Celebrity and their inept port agents. Dutch security screening was massive yet understaffed at D-1, as only about half the counters were manned. I will not even try to list all of the steps taken to get on board that aircraft! The airport was a complete zoo. It was like several football stadiums full of people pushing and shoving, and in the case of Celebrity staff, yelling at folks trying to get their baggage off one of the mis-stacked trucks, the higher numbers came off first.:( It was total absolute chaos. We will avoid Amsterdam at all costs in the future. BTW, the cruise was very nice, but a really sour and stress-laden way to end it!

  12. This is really something....in all my cruises I have never seen this on

the main dining room menu. I will be on Summit in November....maybe

    I should see if I can get one.....I LOVE a good steak:D

Hi Lois! Yes, I was surprised as well. We were on the Eclipse doing a TA that was provisioned in Southampton. I believe Melody's cruise was out of Miami. So it wasn't just a one-off thing. As my wife reminded me last night, all of us at the table were dubious as to what quality of cut I would receive. It was ordered off the right side of the menu, so it wasn't one of those NY strips, like what is usually found on the left side. We will be on the Silhouette in a couple of weeks, so we will be on the lookout for a repeat! Take care............

  13. I don't think anyone has been served a porterhouse steak on a Celebrity ship....including specialty restaurants. Most steak on the ship is NY Cut which is the non tenderloin part of a T bone steak. A porterhouse steak is larger and generally thicker than a T-bone and has significantly more tenderloin than a T-bone. I'm sure celebrity has taken freedom of expression to describe a t-bone as a porterhouse....but it's in word only.

we've found the steak in the specialty restaurants to be very tender and flavorful, but they are not porterhouse steaks. Our experience with the NY Strip steak is far less positive....in fact I probably send 1/2 of them back due to being overcooked or just terrible pieces of meat, or should I say gristle and fat.

But lamb dishes are almost all excellent and other dishes quite good if you avoid the non-chicken/turkey birds. Hot soups are generally quite good, salads are fresh, desserts can be iffy in the MDR and buffet, but there's always cafe al bacio which has great (and free) pastries most of the day and evening. Finally the sushi in the buffet is refreshing starting at 5pm...

If you order the shrimp cocktail, order two...but other appetizers seem to be nice size.

Melody(awhfy) is correct. On a recent Celebrity cruise I ordered a steak. What was delivered looked like a very thick cut t-bone with a very generous tenderloin portion. It was excellent. One of the best I've ever had in any venue on a cruise ship......BTW, the crab cakes in the MDR are to die for!!! :)

  14. Roger -- Happy Anniversary to you and Julie. Hope you have as great a cruise as we had. You will have some updated staff changes to report.

Diane: Thanks Diane!!! We really appreciate this thread, as it is nice to know who we are sailing with, crew-wise.... BTW, we just booked this BI a little over a month ago, so it is now coming up real fast! Take care friend...........

  15. No changes to Arno's list. However, there will be some changes soon:

Capt Dimitrios Kafetzis - 2 more cruises before his vacation

Cruise Director Richard Spacey goes on 2 mo vacation in 12 days

Captain's Club Hostess Deborah (note correct spelling) Poortier moves to the Equinox in two weeks. Donna comes back to the Silhouette

Food & Beverage Manager Zafer Colak - Contract ends in August

    Diane

Diane: Hello and thanks for the update! Julie and I will be on the Silhouette in three weeks for a 12 night British Isles Cruise.(for Our 25th Anniversary) So, all of this is very timely info for us!!!:) BTW, say hi to Lou!!!!!

  16. My cravings are always for something I would not normally eat. e.g. For a few years it was for Salt & Vinegar crisps [chips] but I do not actually like them!

Thanks everyone for the information. It has been passed onto my husband and has at least stopped him saying that "you cannot get donuts on Celebrity ships". Now can you solve my other marital issues ......

Sue: My wife asked for 'a donut' on a Celebrity cruise a few years ago, and well, as Larry said, ask and ye shall receive!!! Much to her surprise the waiter brought her an entire platter full of assorted delights! See you and Richard on Eclipse.....:)

  17. Would tend to disagree. Most of my cruising is the Carribean and on formal nights my attire is blazer and dress pants, collar and tie. I inevitably have to remove the jacket and loosen the tie not far into the sitting. I may tend to perspire more easily than some however it is what it is and for me dress pants and open neck shirt will be my 'Formal dress' on my forthcoming 14 day Carribean cruise. I will pack my blazer but will not wear it unless it is insisted upon on Formal Nights. I have considered packing my Kilt etc as this is a very 'cool' attire, but it weighs a fair bit and takes up a lot room in the case and am having difficulty in justifying an extra baggage charge (re the flight) just for 3 formal nights.

Mac, you and Sandy looked great on our last cruise, keep it up friend!!! :)

  18. Rossy was Captains club Hostess & she was delightful. I saw another post (actually two) that said they didn't like her (!). She was friendly, personable & spoke to everyone of the 450+ Elite, Elite+ & Zenith folks in Sky Lounge in Evening & Tuscan in morning. Paul Baya was the Cruise Director, he was awesome!

Have to agree with Melody!...Hi Melody and Les!!!...Rossy was the best!!! Contrary to what previous 'reviewers' say, she was very professional in all situations and a real delight to chat with. :) Celebrity is very lucky to have her...IMHO.

  19. Jack: Thank you for posting such a marvelous review! We did this cruise back on Feb. 14-28, 2010. I dare say ours was maybe, maybe as good as yours.:) One of the best we have ever taken, for sure!:) It was a great pleasure to relive it through your wonderful writing style. My wife and I are going to dig out our pictures and video and refresh our memories some more as we have a reunion cruise of sorts with our Antarctic gang from here on Cruise Critic in Feb. One caveat that you may appreciate, it will be an Eastern Caribbean on the Equinox. No parkas required. Only beach attire. Again, thanks for doing this, it was fun reading all 17 pages the past few days.........

  20. No, you are not the only person who has seen this. Everyone but the Celebrity programmers has seen it--for around a month now. It would be nice if the Celebrity programmers would take a look at it, since the message is clearly addressed to them, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Linda: Thanks! I had been thinking it was my browser or something that was causing the sign-up issues! Also have problems accessing my reservations pages. Celebrity sites really 'are' lousy........

  21. Great Celebrity website...Tried this with both Chrome and IE ! Am I the only one who has seen this?
