I completely skimmed by this and didn't see this at all. You have taught me to read the fine print more carefully! I am more than happy to do one of the above for 5% discount, and at least they say just to leave a review.. not necessarily a favorable one!

Thanks for pointing this out. I didn't realize this either so I checked my confirmation and went to their website for clarification. Sure enough - there it is:

7% DISCOUNT 3 NIGHTS MINIMUM STAY + FREE WELCOME DRINK

Don't know how I feel about this actually.....

  2. Seems there are a few of us that are going to give the Albergo Cesari a try! You really can't beat the price and location so I just booked it. Going to stay 3 days post cruise so we got the discount too :D

I promise to come back and post pictures and a quick review in early November 2014!

  3. Thanks for the recommendation hotel al Ponte. Unfortunately it's fully booked for the 2 days in May we want. We will keep looking!

Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

You may be having the same problem as I just experienced. When I changed from 2 nights to 3 there was availability. So, contacting them directly may work to see if they will waive the minimum.

  4. Linda if you want to spend some time at Trunk or Cinnamon Bay then shop in Cruz Bay that's a great day. The beaches are gorgeous, and Cruz has several nice shops and is much more enjoyable than shopping Charlotte Amalie.

Our favorite way to get there is to taxi to Red Hook on the East End and take the 20 min ferry to Cruz. Grab a taxi to the beach and return to Cruz, and return to the ship the same way. No queues or waiting for other sin your group, and a very nice day. You will meet many others on the ferry that do this every visit because t is so easy.

Thanks for the advise. I have been to St john on one previous cruise and wished I had more time to see the shops. The two that I covered were very nice!

My only problem with going independently is - the number of ships in port. The lines to board the ferry were very long and added lots of time to the transfer. I estimate we waited about an hour in the hot sun :( Could have just been a bad day but I was hoping that the cruise excursions would run smoother. Any thoughts?

  5. A very entertaining thread and it is clear that there are a lot of cruisers that sail on Carnival that just don't care about the dining "experience" (which a lot of us enjoy).

Best to take your cruise dollars elsewhere which I just did by booking the Summit instead of the Valor :)

I join with the others here that say "enough is enough". I don't want my cruise to feel like what I can experience at home for a lot less money.....

  6. There are a number of variations on this 6.5 hour excursion which exclude the cruise along the shore of St. John. For example, the Self Explore St. John (ST03) provides you with the same ferry ride to and back from St. John but you get an extra hour to explore or on your own, shop or to enjoy one of the beaches.

Do you know if the return ferry ride is a set time? I want to do a bit of shopping in St John before returning but may not spend as much time at the beach and I may not need the entire 6.5 hours listed for this excursion.

  7. Spencer Ambrose's Jalousie Beach Break excursion no longer advertises a stop at Anse Chastanet Beach and Herod makes no mention of this on his website either. If you are interested in stopping there, perhaps you could make special arrangements with one of these tour operators. From Castries, Anse Chastanet is en route to Jalousie Beach.

Thanks, for the heads up! I contacted Spencer to ask about the stop at Anse Chastanet and he said he no longer makes a snorkel stop there because of the currents. But he is will to drop off and pick up later.

Looking at Mystic Man and so far I like this option instead of so much time at Jalousie :)

  8. Ref the loss of table clothes on CCL, the only way I can see that is a cheapening of the dining experience. They can use any euphemism they want to explain it, but the bottom line is, it's cheap.

Wow, I agree and can't imagine eating in the main dining room without table clothes!

OP, you will love the Brilliance! I was debating between the Valor and the Summit for 2015 and so glad I didn't book the Valor :)

  9. Suggest you try contacting Mystic Man. We were on a catamaran last week with them. There were only 9 of us (min 8 required) and we went whale watching, snorkeled at a marine reserve for some of the best snorkeling ever, had great views of the Pitons, and toured Marigot Bay on the way back to port. There was an option to visit the black sand beach at the snorkel site, but we chose to snorkel for the entire time as it was incredible!

We did the eco tour for $70 per person.

Based on their website that is the Cruise Ship Eco Adventure and it sounds really nice! Thanks for posting this :)

  10. We did the Jalousie Beach break on our cruise this past May and LOVED it!

We left the ship by speedboat and were at Jalousie Beach in about 45 minutes. There was a stop, for photo opportunities, when we got close to the Pitons. My guess is that the beach would be warm since it's in the tropics. Since we were the first group arriving at Jalousie Beach, we had first pick of the loungers that are free. We had no complaints on where those chairs were and there was plenty of shade. We could move them into the sun if we preferred. There are fancy, cushioned loungers on the resort side of the beach that are for the resort guests. We were fine with where we were. The scenery is beautiful and we were able to walk along the beach in front of the resort and had the option of using our beach towels in that area.

We had four hours at Jalousie Beach, so that left us plenty of time for snorkeling, walking the beach or just enjoying the scenery from the loungers. Our day was very relaxed and a lot of fun.

On the way back was the "Sea Tour" portion where we traveled back to the ship in the speedboat, this time staying closer to the island with several stops at different sights for pictures and information. One thing we all really appreciated was the fact that Spencer and the working with him made sure each one of us got the pictures we wanted. He would turn the boat so that people on the other side could get good pictures and would make sure everyone was done before he left. We have no regrets at all and loved our day in St. Lucia and our time with Spencer and crew.

Some reviews that I have read talk about a stop at Anse Chastanet but most don't. Did you make a stop here for snorkeling?

  11. As of today, there are 160 reviews of Spencer's tours on Tripadvisor. 17 of those rate him as average, poor or terrible. So, approximately one out of ten customers feel his excursions are not above par. That, along with the reports of the beach itself helped us to decide to look for something else. Everyone needs to decide what your priorities are and go with realistic expectations. Hopefully you'll be in the 90% who will have a good or excellent day! :D

This assumes that everyone that takes his tour writes a review and as we all know that is not the case.

I have never written a review on TripAdvisor and have taken some wonderful excursions around the world. I guess if I had a really bad experience I would be inclined to write something so others know can make informed decisions though.

What tour did you book and did you enjoy it? CC reports are always the best and I would love to hear your experience :)

Some reviews on TripAdvisor that are almost hard to believe especially for the same excursions I really enjoyed

  12. Airfare to SJU needs to be monitored but it is often on sale for just a little more...and as mentioned the weather is warmer and the itineraries are so much better :)

I was sorry to see Princess leave SJU and just booked the Summit for 2015.

  13. If you have decided not to go with the balcony, you might want to look at the newer outside cabins on deck 3. I gather they have a very large window. I have booked 3112 for March 2015. The numbers are 3112-3144 . They were originally part of the convention area and now have now been made into cabins. For our 2014 cruise we have a balcony. Once we have done that one we can still upgrade to a balcony if we really think we can't live without it. Cancel the cruise altogether if we don't like Celebrity, or try an outside with a really big window.

We are also looking forward to trying drinks I might otherwise pass on if I had to pay.

I'm booked in one of these cabins for my February 2015 cruise! They are a great deal and I can't wait to enjoy the view - without a balcony on this trip :D

  14. I booked my Hawaii cruise 04-04-14 back in January, booked an inside as thats all I could afford. Have checked prices today, and after phoning Princess to change my booking, have now got a mini-suite for £500 less than I originally booked for the inside! I am beyound excited feel like I have won the lottery!!! I have booked room D303, hope its a good one :D yay!

That is fantastic and I know you're going to enjoy the mini suite :D

  15. Yes, bring back Tortola!

The 14-night is a great cruise and I've done it 3 times. But it's always the same ports with maybe one exception. Mix it up! Absolutely no reason whatsoever to go to both St. Thomas and St. Maarten on the same cruise. Both are shopping ports. Do one or the other.

I'd also like to see a cruise with more time in San Juan.

Funny that I just booked the Summit for the St Thomas and St Maarten stop and I don't spend time shopping in either port :)

Would love to get back to Tortola again soon too and the 7 day itineraries work best for me.
