  1. Hi scluvsrain - I know! I was so conflicted about the Troll Road versus seeing Alesund, and finally decided I really want to see Alesund and the attractions right around it, and not too keen on an all day bus ride, although the Troll Road looks worth it.

I'm thinking of doing the same tour - out to the islands of Giske and Godoy, the viewpoint and the outdoor museum. That leaves several hours to spare to wander around Alesund.

I'm also torn about the Troll Road tour - but it's all day and would leave no time for me to see Alesund itslef.

  2. I have booked a tour with Norway Excursions that covers Godoy and Giske as well as the Sunnemore Outdoor museum and the viewpoint at Mt Aksla, then goes around the town. It's 83 euros and lasts 4 1/2 hours. We thought we could walk around a bit after the tour. It seemed to cover most of the best sights.

  3. Thank you = that sounds really good!

Flytoget! You can pay by swiping your credit card at the platform (platform 13 /14) and then swipe again at ticket barriers at the airport. If you need to buy more tickets with the same credit card there are tickets machines aswell, but swiping the card is the easiest. At the platform you will be met by employes of Flytoget who can help you. Flytoget departs every 10 minutes (excluding saturdays and very early mornigs/nights wich is every 20 minutes)

And last but not least, Flytoget have a travel warrenty included in your ticket, wich means if the train is delayed by 30 minutes or more (basicly never happens) they will pay and rebook your flight to another one as soon as possible.

  4. In case anyone traveling to the Baltic, especially Talinn, is interested, there is a very interesting and well done movie called The Singing Revolution. It's available on Amazon video. It tells the history of their independence movement, which was largely accomplished through song. Anyone taking a tour in Talinn will probably go to the Song Festival grounds, and the TV Tower, and it will definitely have a lot more meaning to me after seeing that movie. It also touches on Latvia and Lithuania.

  5. Thank you!

The price does vary by destination - highly recommended to book any excessive weight or additional bags in advance at their web up to 6 hours before departure - the prices at check-in are higher.

Last price I have seen is 65NOK a pound for excessive weight at check in.

Norwegian are operation with different 'classes':

LowFare, No check-in bags included - only carry-on

    LowFare+ - 1 x 20 kg (44 lbs) + carry-on

    Carry on luggage is 10 kg – 55 x 40 x 23 cm for all classes.

  6. Wow - I did not know that. So do you mean you can check a bag up to 44 lbs and then what happens if you are over that - can you pay more or are you barred from taking the suitcase? Also, what about carryon bags? Thank you!

Please be aware of luggage allowance. Tickets are sold without check-in luggage and if with luggage a weight limit of 20 kg or 44 lbs. I did have serious problems getting below 20 kg at my last Norwegian flight.

  7. The ship arrives at 4 pm the day before and stays there overnight. We have special permission to get off in Oslo and they tell me the gangway will be left up throughout the night.

Is the ship staying in port during the night or how early does it arrive in Oslo?

If you are sure that you can leave the ship at 5.30 there shall be no problem to get to your flight in time.

  8. We are getting off our ship in Oslo and flying to Stockholm. Our flight is on Norwegian Air Shuttle at 8:30 am on a Thursday. We are getting off the ship early as it is returning to Southampton, so we will be the only ones getting off the morning. I am aware of the Flytoget, but I feel more comfortable with a taxi despite the extra time and expense. How early must one get to the airport for this type of flight - 2 hours ahead of the flight? It is international, but seems more like a shuttle. Can any Norwegian or Swedish residents help? Also, at that time of day (maybe leaving at 5:30 am), is an hour sufficient to get to the airport in a taxi? Thank you!

  9. We are going in August and have hired guide Mindaugus Jucius. He is taking us to the Curonian Spit & Hill of Witches, as well as a tour of the Old Town - 6 hours altogether. I think I had to hire him through Viator Tours, but he is taking just the 2 of us.

Is anyone familiar with the tour group Klaipeda Sightseeing? How about Cruising Klaipeda? Have been searching for a guide to take our group to the Curonian Split, including Hill of Witches. Found a good guide thru Tours By Locals but not happy with their pay in advance policy. If anyone has toured with either of these companies please let me know your experience, good or bad. If anyone has another recommendation for a tour guide let me know that too! Thanks!

  10. Thanks Bigben - but I am trying to find the spot you are talking about on the website with no luck. I went to the specific cruise, then picked "suites" but I don't see a place to put in the cabin #.

You can out to Celebrity website and find the cruise you want and category. Near the bottom you can put a cabin in and check if it is available. There is another online cruise TA company. They will show you what cabins are available with flashing blue dots. But I can not cruise you in the right direct
  11. Thank you all - this has been even more interesting than I anticipated!

I would never do a CS. The bathroom is smaller than the S1 corner afts. The bedroom is quite small. I love the big open space of the S1's and the wake, even though it is a long walk; for me the S1corner aft hands down. The bedroom doesn't even have a window! I am referring to the S class ships and CS....you will either like the CS or hate it..no in between.

  12. Thank you Ozkiwi - that is really helpful!

We've done this cruise twice so here are my opinions.

The starboard side is best for the Auckland to Sydney itinerary - but it books up fast, we finally have a starboard cabin booked for our next NZ cruise but couldn't get one for the last two. You do get some coastal views, especially when going around East Cape on the sea day after Tauranga.

The best place to be for sailaways out of most of the harbours is the Sky Lounge, forward on deck 14. Watching the ship navigate the narrow channels at Tauranga and Port Chalmers from this spot is spectacular, and as an added bonus you might see some albatross at the entrance to Otago Harbour.

The best position for entering Milford Sound is port side forward on deck 15. Make sure you're up on deck as the ship is approaching the sound, don't leave it too late - you'll see why when you get there. :D Look out for the seals basking on seal rock in the late afternoon sun.

  13. Thank you - that's just the kind of info I was wondering about!

On the S class ships the Celebrity Suites do not have a dining table like they do on the M class ships. So the only plus IMHO to a Celebrity Suite is a separate bedroom as I find the CS on the S class ships to feel cramped.

On a port intensive cruise I would go with a S1 and save a few $.

  14. Thank you all & Hi Terry! I was really wondering about which side is best for when we are in the ports. I do realize it doesn't matter when you are at sea:). We are probably going to get off in Dunedin and make our way to Queenstown for a few days and spend an overnight in a boat on Milford Sound, instead of staying with the ship. We would then be skipping the Tasman crossing which I think I would hate!

  15. Thank you! It is just one couple. We are really not interested in an Aqua Suite, but I agree with you it makes more more sense to have a larger suite when there are more sea days, except I avoid cruises with a lot of sea days! So I think I will go with the Sky Suite.

Our last 3 cruises we have been in Sky Suites. We had been mostly Aqua cabins before that. We do enjoy the Suite Life. If it is just 2 people I would go with a Sky Suite. If your with another couple the Celebrity Suite might be better as the bedroom has a door. Giving both couples some privacy. You will be able to have meals served in your suite by your butler. Also you will get more Captain's Club points if you book the Celebrity Suite. If I would book a Celebrity Suite it would be on a TA, Australia to Hawaii or Hawaii to Vancouver. What I'm try to say is a cruise with more sea days to enjoy the suite. As your will be on the Solstice I would check out the following for noise. Some of the S2 suites do have noise from the Oceanveiw cafe.
