We had two great, low-key meals at El Jibarito--cost and casual-wise, it would seem to be what you're looking for.

Thank you so much for the suggestions! Very helpful! Mercat de Santa Catarina looks wonderful, we will definitely check it out!
You might try Hotel Colon, right on the cathedral plaza in the heart of the Gothic Quarter.
Very close to Mercat de Santa Catarina, too.

Just curious if you decided what to do? My family will be on the Dream in February and have kids of similar ages. I would have written my own post, but it would be exactly the same as yours lol. Also not wanting to spend a ton of money on ship excursions, but concerned about attempting something on our own.
Check out Courtney Taylor. We had a private family tour including Dunn River falls, tubing, and Blue hole cliff jumping that was perfect for our brood--then 8, 11, 17, and 21.
Also, you'll find Trip Advisor has many more current reviews of the private vendors there--it's a pretty brisk market, and these guys know they have to provide a safe, quality experience.

AT&T works fine around San Juan.

Isla Verde.
That's where I'd spend three days if I had them!

Are there any places near courtyard at Isla Verde where I can buy some water & pop to take on cruise?
In addition to the Walgreens there is a largish supermarket type place in the vicinity--forget what it was called--but I saw it on the cab ride back to the airport and kicked myself for not seeing it earlier.

Concur on Mi Casita for good inexpensive, authentic meals.
There is a really good beachfront place a little past (west) of the Intercontinental hotel, too--El Alambique. Great food and atmosphere.

We took bus to cathedral, then walked up to the castle and back down to the pier. Leisurely day.

call one of the vendors and ask to set up a private small group tour and recruit from your roll call.

Does anyone have recommendations for a zipline/waterfall/hike? I've looked at trip advisor, just want some opinions here. We'll be in San Juan for 2 ½ days pre-cruise and would like an adventure. Thanks
Rent a car for the day and drive to El Yunque rainforest. Plenty of hiking, a couple of waterfalls, then head to the beach, I think there's a couple of privately run ziplines near El Yunque, but not in the forest preserve itself.

If you are looking for a low-key, mom-and-pop place with very authentic Puerto Rican food at low prices, this is your spot. Very casual, you will be eating with local residents, and a no-frills atmosphere. All of the taxi cab drivers know the place.
Concur--my native Puerto Rican boss recommended Raices, but they were closed for renovations and the cab driver took us to El Jibarito without hesitation. It doesn't look like much--but the food is excellent, the beer is cold, and nothing is overpriced.

Morning means coffee and mallorcas at one of OSJ's pastry shops!

There is a Walgreens with beer, wine, ice, and plenty of snacks within walking distance to a good area on Isla Verde beach to visit. I stayed in this specific area for a week while on a land vacation less than 2 years ago.
My advice is to have the taxi drop you off at the beach end of Calle Tartak. There are chair and umbrella rentals, a bar, and a bar/restaurant named El Alambique which is excellent. A little further down the street is San Juan Water and Beach Club Hotel. There is a pedestrian path to the side of this hotel which leads to the main drag and directly across the street from Walgreens.
You will have no problem picking up a taxi for the ride back to the ship. They are readily available at the nearby hotel.
I have included photos of Isla Verde Beach at the Calle Tartak area. I've included a photo of the chair rental fees.
+1 on this advice. Just there last week and it is exactly as he says--and I already wish I was back!

After this long, he probably qualifies to be relabeled as "Tourist Attraction" or "Street Theater", instead of scam.

Too late for you, but we had a nice midday refreshment at Skagway Brewing.

The one on Western is a very easy walk up to Seattle Center, however.
And was a $5 cab ride to Pier 66.

An easy "do-it-yourself" thing in Juneau is the aerial tram up Mt. Roberts. Great views even if you just ride it up and back, and more hiking if you are inclined to head up further.

One of my guidebooks said about Ketchikan: "If you can't see the top of Deer Mountain, it is raining. If you can see the top, it will rain."

I was able to book individual excursions for my wife and son in Ketchikan via shoreexcursionsgroup.com last year. This looks to be close to what I booked for them. http://www.shoreexcursionsgroup.com/Salmon-Fishing-Adventure-Ketchikan-p/akktkcbsalfsh.htm
They were given instructions on where to meet, signed up for their fishing licenses and went out with a small group of other independently booked cruisers, and caught fish!

"That'll buff right out..."

Homewood Suites is about a mile away along the waterfront. Easy walk or $5 cab ride to the pier, and only a few blocks from the Space Needle/Seattle Center area as well.

Had this cabin a couple of years ago, and I concur--nice place.
Thought I'd add two of my pics:
On the bridge looking back. (That's Mrs. Quercus looking at us from the balcony)

The best pictures from our Alaska cruise were from my daughter's iphone.

My favorite pictures were the quick snaps of my wife and kids on our balcony.

Alaska is certainly a paradise for wildlife photographers...but if you're not already proficient, just try to relax and make memories!

I'm interested in any feedback anyone has about this status, and particularly the concierge inside suites. Thinking of dipping our toes back into the ocean next year.
