Last month, Carmel Limo from LGA to Red Hook Cruise Terminal was U$60.50 plus tip. Cheers…

You are certainly free to skip these events, though. Then you wouldn't have to subject yourself to the low-life gift shop manager or junior bridge officer. What a very, very sad, silly thing to write.... but not unexpected.
Candidly, if you are having those experiences over and again, it is likely more you, than them. I've had the unfortunate circumstance of sharing a table with guests who feel compelled to share that they've sailed 8,000 times in the best suites on the ship or they go on and on and on about the bad food or bad entertainment or how they know Captain Luigi etc. No one else cares, including the officer. Arrogant, rude, condescending. You think they'd get the hint when the officer bolts when their time is up.
It is best to keep those things out of the dinner conversation and focus on their families, cultures, favorite destinations, favorite ships, etc. Be humble and genuinely curious.
Summarizing, if your people seem disinterested, it is likely more you, than them. You might approach your next dinner with that mindset. Cheers.

Usually very interesting but keep an open mind about the title ‘Officer’. Have had dinner with ‘Officers’ from the Children’s Program Supervisor to the Casino Manager to Deck Officers to the General Manager. Depends on who has ‘volunteered’. Enjoy!

On the Sun, mentioned our anniversary and requested a cake, cup cake size, with a candle (if possible.). Be careful cuz what we received was a 12 inch, beautifully decorated chocolate gateau. Impossible to eat it all and, even after eating a coupla slices, it was too large to fit easily into the fridge so we offered it to the room steward. After dinner, when we returned to our cabin, there was another similar, very fancy cake, this time vanilla with colourful roses etc as decoration. Took photos without tasting the cake and then asked our room steward to take the cake to the crew buffet which he did. Feel special? You betcha! Cheers…

Fish and chips in the UK are better cuz the fish is different, the spuds are different (good ol’ King Edwards) and the oil is different. Add in the authentic atmosphere and voila. Don’t forget a pint of Old Speckled. Plus ‘memories’ of such things improve with age. Starting to feel peckish? Cheers…

America had a top speed of 25 knots, while the SSUS could do 30-38 knots.
On my transatlantic 4 1/2 day run, the average speed was over 34 knots. Rough weather was not much of a deterrent for speed. Of course the ship was built to be ‘requisitioned’ in time of war. Believe aluminium was the metal of choice. Notice the spelling. Was told the only wood on board was for the Wheel on the Bridge and a ‘cutting board’ in the galley. Cheers…

Some fish n chip shops still use News Print - the same paper used in the production of newspapers just with out the ink.
It was the ink that provided the ‘flavour’..

Even out of the UK I can't recall the fish being cod, the portions are tiny and, worst of all, the meal is served on plates with cutlery whereas we all know the only way to eat fish (cod) and chips is straight out of the paper with your fingers.
Fish and chips wrapped in newspaper. Good memories! RIP News of the World. Cheers…

When you visited St Julien, the site of the first use of poison gas, did you also get to stop by the "Brooding Canadian" memorial? I reckon it's probably the most impressive memorial out on the battlefield. For those not familiar with the history, when the Germans let the gas go, the French troops in the Allied trenches, broke ranks and fell back in disarray. Canadian troops in close reserve were rushed forward to re- establish the line, which they held for two days. About 30% of their number became casualties - some killed or wounded, others effected by the gas. The Brooding Canadian commemorates their bravery.
The top of the memorial forms the bowed head and shoulders of a Canadian soldier. The soldier's hands rest on the butt of his down-turned rifle in the 'arms reversed' position, a pose used as gesture of mourning and respect for the fallen performed at funerals and services of remembrance. An apt memorial and one that stirs one’s emotions but, perhaps, ‘Brooding’ is not the best descriptor for the monument. Cheers…

The effort to conserve the SS United States cruise liner has fallen short of funds
Great ship. Sailed in a First Class cabin. The crossing from Southampton to New York City took 4 1/2 days. Pity that the ship could not be preserved in a functioning role such as the Queen Mary in Long Brach or the ss Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Ah well! Great memories! Cheers…

I truly enjoy French onion soup. I do find a difference.
In the main dining room, it is like heated soup and they drop a piece of toast with cheese on top. I know they do it this way as once ours came without the bread and cheese and the waiter said "they forgot to put the crouton on top".
Cagney's is much better than the MDR. Clearly it is baked or broiled with the bread/cheese on top.
Le Bistro is best of the three. Also cooked with the bread and cheese present.
I am looking forward to enjoying a bowl of this one week from Monday at Le Bistro!
