  1. We were in 6664, no lifeboat. Perfect place to be actually, I would book deck six again, because you can easily go outside onto the boardwalk. We used to go on the aft deck near the shuffleboard when we came into port, it was great, especially for Puerto Rico. You also have quick access to deck five, the promenade because there is a staircase right there to go down to the promenade. It comes out right near the rising tide bar. The solarium does fill up quickly, at least in our experience. I too spend a lot of time on the balcony and I found that balcony really great, I love the balcony size on those ships....I just got off pride of America and it gives me better appreciation for royal Caribbean balconies. I could see the ocean well and hear the waves on Oasis....it was a good cabin.

  2. I have family on that cruise. Big disappointment because it was a very long way to travel for a vacation that never happened. Probably never going back, so their dream of seeing New Zealand is over. At the same time it has been well handled. I have cruised on older ships without hesitation. Just unfortunate, what can you do?

Once you have been once there is not a whole lot to see again.

  4. They prefer you not use a credit card actually, they pay really, really high fees for credit cards so often you get a better price if you pay in cash. Everywhere pretty much they take US dollars. I am Canadian and I take US dollars with me.

  5. I think it is only 30 miles from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, so 50km. That said I would not do a FLL flight at noon from Miami, you have to check in by 10:30 and our last flight out of there to Toronto it was lined up outside of the terminal for a good long way when we got there. Heads up there is a transat flight out of FLL to Toronto that we managed to get for a great price, upgraded to club class at the airport for $60 and it was a brand new airplane with the best club class I have ever seen.

  6. We are also RCCL doing POA for the first time, same reasoning as you. We are going in March. We are booking our excursions with Roberts of Hawaii, package rates are better than the ship and they use a better Luau place. Our travel agent has recently been on POA and advised us that it is different in that the focus is the ports rather than the ship. NCL serves Pepsi products rather than Coke products and there is no assigned dining time.

  7. The walk to the Fort is longer than that, it is uphill and if you have not been to San Juan before, it is quite humid, more so than some other Caribbean destinations. I haven't done it by cab so I cannot advise....I don't think cabs are actually allowed down by the cruise dock, and I have not seen them in the three times I have been there. You might want to consider an excursion for the beach, I believe they are fairly far from the cruise port area. That area is fabulous though for just walking around, the history is incredible, there is much to see in old San Juan.

  8. Carnival has some pretty good dishes here and there. Food is very personal. I certainly found some things I really liked on Carnival, amazing mashed potatoes, great chocolate muffins in the morning, very good sandwiches at the sandwich shop. Overall pretty good. Personally I found if the two carnival ships I have been on, that one was better than the other. Likewise I have done three royal Caribbean and two had fabulous food, one other not good at all. We did the steakhouse and it was really great. I can entirely recommend that.

  9. St. Marten is lovely....from the dock you take the water taxi to town, $8 for the day as many hop offs and on as you wish. Get off on the downtown pier and stroll the town, they have lovely shops, very clean. There is a great beach right in town where you can rent sun loungers for the day along with refreshments and food delivery to your chair. You can also take an excursion to the French side, it has a very nice market, but is more expensive. The other option is to go to any of the numerous beaches. I always go to the town there. In St. Thomas there is a tour that does a brief history tour and then goes to Magen's Bay, a really lovely beach. You can rent loungers there, the swimming is lovely. St. Thomas and St Maarten are the two best jewelry shopping places in the Caribbean as long as you are prepared to bargain. St. Kitts is a good place to do a tour, it has a nice rain forest, and some interesting history. When you get off the ship there are tour companies who do a three hour tour for twenty dollars per person, in air conditioned vans. Considerably cheaper. The sugar train, which we had considered, was quite a disappointment when we saw it and we were glad we had not booked it. I have not been to the other two ports. I have done st. Maarten and st. Thomas four times they are my favourite ports.

  10. My last cruise in Oasis we had five ports, three were starboard. But it can be any, it is not decided by the captain but by the port authority and it is not even consistent in each port. One time it might be starboard the next port. That said I normally book starboard. I booked starboard on allure for three ports, it docked port side all three.

  11. You do not need to bring your passport on any of those stops, you just need your sea pass card and a form of photo ID such as a drivers license. I always just take my drivers license. It is because the ship has your info and they clear the ship when it docks. Actually you have to consider that it is not necessarily a good idea to take your passport off the ship, if you lost your belongings or something like that then you would lose your passport and that would not be good. And no, the ships absolutely do not hold your passport in the Caribbean. You put it in the safe in your room. You won't need it until you return to the US. Those are all lovely ports, you will have a wonderful time and happy birthday.

  12. We were going to do the train. We decided not to just because the cost is crazy for what it is and it is only a short way by train, the rest is bus. And the train is not that great looking. The tracks are nothing like North American tracks and in my opinion did not look that safe. The areas the train ran in were not exactly picturesque either. That said, we opted to do an island tour, when you get off the ship there is an area where there are multiple tour companies offering tours. We had a four hour tour for twenty dollars each, we made quite a few stops and our guide was quite knowledgeable. We stopped at Romney manor, we asked to do the tour and he parked while we toured, for half an hour, you don't need a whole lot longer. The batik fabrics are beautiful, with many for sale and quite reasonable actually. There is an entrance fee for the tour, I think it was $5.

It was a good tour in an air conditioned vehicle. Taking a taxi to Romney manor would probably cost more than our whole tour did. Have a great time. St. Kitts is beautiful and Adventure of the Seas is a great ship, my first cruise was on that ship.

  13. I would go aft on six. Actually I just did a balcony aft on six. Loved it. One huge advantage is being able to just walk out to the boardwalk. As well there is a staircase down to the promenade deck. We were in 6664. I would book this deck again. Very convenient and no, we really had no movement issues. She is a big ship and seems to move little. Deck twelve midship has a disadvantage....there is a motorized cleaner that runs around at the top of that deck. I have heard that this occurs early morning and can be annoying.

  14. There is actually a beach day package with carnival in Routan that was just over twenty bucks for two people. It included a lift ticket, there is a ski lift that goes to the beach, it was cool. Then it includes two beach loungers with a sunshade and two floating mats, for the entire day. It was actually wonderful, the swimming area was great and we just hung out there the entire day. There is a restaurant right there that does service right to your beach lounger. You can lie there and look right st the ship actually. Relaxing day. Carnival docks at a mahogany Bay.

  15. We booked a next cruise on our last cruise. We got a thirty percent discount as well as two onboard credits, one we used on the present cruise and one against our future cruise.....so for a hundred dollar deposit on a future cruise we got a hundred on board credit each right away plus a hundred for the new booking, each, plus that is our deposit for the cruise, plus thirty percent off the cruise. So yes it is actually a good deal.
