1. Too bad on the internet being down! I'm glad Mom is nearby, so you can let us know!

Holding my thumbs on the March cruise. I think all parents of teenagers need a romantic getaway every now and again!

And of course, there is something in it for me in a new wonderful review!

So, how can we help? Start a fund raiser? Write letters? Get David Hasselhoff involved?

Oh, and I finally booked another cruise, so I can write a fabulous cruise review. But you will have to wait, the cruise is in Feb of 2017!

  2. Wow! Thank you Stef for that moving history lesson! I also knew just a little about the potato famine. How tragic! The pictures of the statues are very moving also.

It was interesting seeing the picture of the modern homeless against the famine story!

And I was remembering you history in Scotland with the locals needing to leave due to the change in the lands, and the statue there.

I am sitting at my desk, in my warm clothes, just after lunch feeling humbled.

  3. Oh and i've never even seen those guinness crisps around here !

Okay....it's official! The Guinness Crisps are for the tourist!

I'm with Stef, Cath, get to posting....something!

As for Stef, those pictures of the climb are spectacular. They actually remind me of some of the wilderness areas in the Pacific Northwest, with the rocks, trees, ferns and lakes!

But I did get a chuckle from the German telling us the Scots are fabulous climbers and hikers. That is my impression of the Germans!!! I have no hope of making this climb.

  4. Oh, I like the Science story best, no wait, the Legend, no wait, the Science....I think they are both fascinating.

I'm sorry it was such a difficult day for your family. I'm glad you could see the beauty of the area and are willing and planning to go back!

When I looked at your Carrick a Rede pictures, I thought Tarik and Tanja were both making the same squishy faces in the wind! Maybe that was a sign of things to come.

Take a lot of deep breaths and enjoy your weekend with your family! We'll still be here later, waiting for you!

    Denise

  5. Stef, please don't worry. You're among friends here! :) Your post was thoughtfully written and I don't think anyone would take offense at it. (Of course I'm neither Northern Irish nor Irish...but from a neutral perspective I think you expressed yourself well).

So glad you were able to change your plans on the fly and still visit your top-priority sights!

Pluto, you said exactly what I was thinking!

And I LOVE Tanja's sceptical face! She is so expressive!

Too bad about the lack of Giant transportation!

  6. Could it get any worse

    Well...

If you had been on a US ship, they would have played 'The Happy Wanderer' (Here I go a-wandering, with a knapsack on my back, Val-deri, Val-dera) followed by 'The Beer Barrel Polka' (Roll out the barrel, and we'll have a barrel of fun)

They would serve hot dogs and canned saurkraut with Bud Light and Schnapps and pretzels from a bag.

Makes me shudder, and I'm not from Germany.

On another note, my group of friends sing 'What can you do with a Drunken Sailor' after much alcohol at the campfire while camping. After many years, I still don't know what to do with a drunken sailor!

At least it was only part of one day!

    Denise

  7.
:eek::eek: Is it just me ... or is this a not so nice saying in English as well as it is in German?

I'm sure it wasn't meant that way ... but I almost choked on some coffee when I read that.

:oDarn, I hate when I don't realize a joke at once... it was just that... a joke ...right?

    Stef
Right on all counts! It is not normally a nice thing in English, but it was a joke!

    :)
  8. But enough of that. We`ll leave the pipers and the entire Games with this picture (which I like a lot!)

    15505366807_d87f59a07c_b.jpg

All that’s left to show you are some pictures of the beautiful surroundings of Helmsdale until we finally end this very long and exciting port day. Thanks for having endured all my ramblings with such patience.

    Stay tuned!

    Stef

Wow! Great picture to sum the Games up!

I live in the Seattle (the top, left hand side of the US). The Highland games are at the end of July in the foothills of our mountains, so it looks a little authentic. I think they hold Highland games all over the US, quite a lot of us have some Scots in us (and Irish, and German, and Italian...)

And I have the feeling this wasn't the best port on the trip!

  9. Well, you great Serenade Mediterranean cruise reviewers have finally done it! I’ve been enjoying your adventures so much that I have cancelled my Serenade of the Seas cruise from New Orleans to Boston and have booked a land trip to Italy in its place.

I have borrowed some ideas from all the great reviews.

We are flying into Milan in May and going to the Worlds Expo, then renting a car (hopefully a Panda!) and driving to Venice, Ravenna, Assisi, Siena, Bologna, and then Piedmont.

I won’t be able to post a review here (no cruise ship!) but I will write a review somewhere and let you know where it is.

Keep up the great adventures and stories!

  10. Oh wow thank you Denise. If you did that for me it would be so amazing i would be eternally grateful. Do you need anything done in any other European city ? i'l see if i can sort it out for you in return

Seriously though it would mean a huge amount to me if you did that, - i hope you write a review as i will of course have to see a photo :D

Let's see.....you can go on another European cruise and write another review...that would pay me back! :)

Or maybe drink an Guiness in my honor.

I am not Catholic, but have a lot of Catholic friends. I have always enjoyed the ceremony and spiritality found in Catholic churches. I usually have a list of folks to light candles for, and like to find the "right" church.

I did tell my husband about this, and he really liked the idea. It is always easier when those menfolk are onboard!
