  1. Silversea are simply trying to make the experience better - and indeed safer - for most of their customers.

In recognising that the shortest cruises are around a week and the longest very long indeed, and that passengers feel that the ship becomes their temporary "home from home" this is a genuine attempt by SS to improve that exprience by making the ship feel more like home.

Although Mandarin is the language in most common world-wide usage, English in all it's forms is the most common language for SS customers. Some people aren't clearly at all impressed or bothered by this effort, but I'm not clear anyone could be offended by it. Others think it a welcome effort. I think it a great idea.

When I've been away from home for a while, I feel I'm "almost home" when I hear those lovely English voices when boarding a BA plane. I think many think of the ship as being home when boarding after a day taking in the sights. SS are simply trying to make the majority of it's customers feel more at home and I think they are right to try.

Apart from that "Seaspeak" ie the international maritime language - particularly important when there are emergencies at sea - is English and from a safety aspect encouraging all crew particularly the more junior members to practise English as much as possible is something worthwhile as it increases safety when it is most needed.

I think Jeff has put this entire matter in perspective, Bravo.

  2. Jeff, thanks for all your earlier tips, we are recently back from the Silver Wind, Dubai to Singapore which was a great cruise and loved Singapore and the gardens wing at The Shangri La was superb.

A warning, BA lounge in Singapore was a disaster, there is no FC lounge so you have to sit in the business lounge, well you, would if there were any available seats, which there were not, so after a lot of fuss they sent us to the new, huge, very smart Qantas Lounge, where all was calm and tranquil, and on request they will find some French bubbles for you. BA was poor especially as they now have the A380 on this route, which we enjoyed, but even more reason why they should have a decent Lounge.

No such problem in London on the way out where the Concord Room delivered as expected.

All good wishes for the New Year.

  3. Hi Jeff

Are you heading to Singapore soon, I recall from chats some time ago you maybe about now?

We are looking forward to five nights there, ended up,booking the Garden Wing at Shangri La, when we disembark, the Wind on 1 December.

We head to Dubai on Friday to join the Wind on Sunday, sounds like a full cruise but friends already on board tell us it's,all very good.

  4. Yes two of us and we are pretty flexible on budget, don't mind splashing out for a few days and especially love Chinese food, Asian Art, gardens and all things botanical.

Hotel wise we do like those with a club floor and lounge as it does save on the bar bills, especially after you get off S S where one does not have to pay. Well we do but it's over and done with in the fare price!,

    With thanks for your advice.

  5. Thanks Jeff, they certainly have a team their and overheads to cover. Fortunately I have never, (famous lat words) come across a group on S S, yet !!!

Incidentally the group previously discussed re Seabourne was from Fujitsu Australia.

Ref Singapore, I,love it their and will be arriving off The Wind on 1 December and have a few days before flying back to London, so all restaurant or hotel recommendations truly appreciated.

  6. Jeff, indeed cob nuts in Waitrose here this morning and Walnuts by the sack load in the Market, not sure where they are from but I shall enquire tomorrow.

Also did rather well at Allan's the rather smart butcher in Mount Street who really do have the most amazing special offers which they email us about, so the freezer is full.:)

  7. I did having studied this convivial site try the Pecheur last week from Waitrose down the road at Fulham Broadway, not bad at all and I shall order some for delivery, which is a blessing in London and free also.

Ref the Seabourn Group, sorry I do not know company name, and Chum who was on board is now trying the new Penninsula in Paris, so I don't want to disrupt his Lunch, Shopping, Drinks, Dinner routine !!

  8. Regarding food piccies - I can barely use the computer, never mind posting photos! Don't even know the difference between posts, threads, and forums (fora?), so need to be forgiven.

This is probably not the place to get into a comparison situation, but I just wonder if you, Jeff, or Sophia, have ever tried Seabourn? We have been on several Silversea, Seadream and many Regent as well as Seabourn - and I believe Mr. L has had similar experience; probably more. The two most alike are Silversea and Seabourn, but there are distinct differences between them, even though the ships are mostly of similar size. Don't wish to get into arguments here - there is a thread currently on both boards, but just interested to know.

A very good Chum of mine has recently disembarked one of the Seabourn Ships

Having had a hellish time as their was a group of 170 Aussie Computer Salesmen on board, for eleven day's. They went through untold slabs of beer, ' by the hour' and apparently don't bother with the glasses!!

Needless to say letters of complaint being dispatched pronto.

  9. Can anyone confirm, Silver Discoverer denied entry on present cruise? If so this will cause havoc with next itinerary, some 11 scheduled stops in Russia!!

I think this is so from Spinaker postings on 'Water Cooler' but it's easy to get lost there!!

    Thanks indeed.

  10. We just disembarked Silver Spirit transatlantic and dined in Le Champagne three times. My comment is that the menu does not change, ever, at all and it became boring and repetitive.

There are now 520 Relais et Chateaux property's in fifty country's so surely more varied menus could be researched and rotated, and yes with all those country's it would be easy to theme differently each evening, a great idea.

Having said that, the food and service was outstanding not only here but throughout the Ship, 350 passengers and 360 Crew ensured that !!😄

  11. Yes likewise Actiities not working this morning in London, it is now, but shows all my restaurant reservations for Spirit as wait listed and we depart this Saturday!!

The only thin it does correctly is calculate the money side of things!!
