  1. Radiance of the seas visited Newcastle yesterday, according to the Newcastle Herald, 6/4/18. Arrived at 7am and left at 5pm on it's way to ship repairs, but certainly not here in Newcastle. The article did not say where the repairs would take place, but as far as I know, we no longer have facilities for dry dock. We drove in to Newcastle today, but there was no sign of her.

  2. I was so pleased to find your posts, I love following your latest adventures.

It's a shame you have struck bad weather up north, hopefully it will be a lot better on the return trip. Where I live, we have not had decent rain for over 3 to 4 months, we would love a bit of what you are getting.

I was on Golden Princess in August to Hawaii, a very enjoyable cruise (35 days). There was a trio of young men called Acoustic Rush Trio, playing in the Piazza with one special concert given because of their popularity. Are they still on the ship? If so, don't miss them. They are excellent.

I will be following along and reading your blog.

    Enjoy the cruise(s).

  3. Thanks for your reply

I don't have the fisheye or telephoto for the Olympus. Are they worth getting?

I'm not sure how many lenses you have but I would take the Rebel with either an 18-250/270/300mm "vacation" lens, or maybe just two lenses to give you some choice. Do you have the optional fisheye or telephoto for the Olympus TG4?
  4. Dave, I really respect your expert advice and knowledge given here on CC.

I have decided to take the Rebel, best to have plenty of options.

The tour you took from the Big Island, can you tell me how you organised that one please. your photo's are fantastic.

    Thanks,

    Kerry

As Glaciers said, many of us would rather leave half of our clothes at home than any "necessary" camera gear, but the choice is entirely up to you based on your personal cruise/photography balance. Personally, I cruise to get to new places to take pictures. I truly enjoy photography and have looked at the world as a possible composition since I picked up my first camera at about 10 years old. Not taking my primary camera(s) would be unthinkable. If you are a casual photographer and don't spend a lot of time with your camera, the phone and the Oly should serve to capture the occasional sunset, wide view of the Hawaiian scenery, fellow travelers or fancy dinner shot. If you like to shoot a lot, the phone isn't going to cut it. I have a Pixel XL and even its spectacular camera falls short in very low light (I mean very low) and in any situation where a telephoto is needed. All of our advice is well meant but the decision is ultimately yours and will be based on your perceived need for the advantages an interchangeable lens camera gives you.

BTW, our last trip to Hawaii was a bit more adventurous with a boat tour out to the lava flow. If I were cruising to Hawaii and had a stop at the Big Island, I would take the tour again without hesitation.

  5. Thanks everyone for your advice, much appreciated.

I have decided to take the Rebel, as I figure that I will be better off with it as without.

I took a new camera on our New Zealand cruise and was very disappointed. Mostly because I didn't understand the camera. It had a large zoom, but that did not give me the close up's I was looking for. They were very grainy.

  6. Just bought an iPhone 7. Wondering whether or not to leave the Canon T4i with its heavy bag and lenses home.

Will the quality of the phone be as good as the Canon? Doing a 35 day Hawaii cruise with lots of sea days.

BTW, I'll have my Olympus TG4 with me.

Appreciate your help on this one.

  7. Thanks OzKiwiJJ, i read thru the thread you sent me but unfortunately its not quite what i'm after. I'm looking for people who have had this syndrome for a long time. I have had it continually for over a year and it hasn't abated at anytime and recently it has worsened without any travelling. I have read that if you have it for 12 months you have it for life. My doctor can't help me any more and i feel like i am on my own to deal with this and would love to meet up or correspond with someone in New Zealand who has had it long term as myself. There is no cure or medication i can take and would like to know how other long term sufferers are dealing with this. Cheers

As I am not in NZ, I hope you don't mind me replying to your post.

So far, we have been on 5 cruises with No. 6 coming up in August. I experienced this after the 1st one, but it only lasted 3 weeks. The subsequent cruises were not too bad, until the last one, to NZ. That was 16 months ago and I still have the rocking motion. I have had physiotherapy for this, but it still stays with me. There was some problem with the vestibular function in my left ear, after undergoing a series of tests. My GP doesn't have any answers either, except to say the next cruise will probably make it worse,or no better, but I am prepared to take the risk. Apparently flying causes the same affects.

I feel for you and know what you are experiencing.

Luckily mine does not include nausea or spinning, as Vertigo sufferers experience.

I'm happy to keep in touch with you, but not sure if I should put my email address on here.
