  1. Hi there, we'll be cruising in a couple of weeks, doing the inside passage. We're coming from Canada, so looking to get a US-based SIM card for our cell phones. From my research, most providers I've seen don't even include Alaska, or the reviews say that the reception is very slow. Does anyone have any insight, or recommendations on providers? Thank you!

The Tongass National Forest is massive in size.  In fact, I think it may be the largest national forest in the US.  In any event it essentially surrounds Ketchikan and a number of other communities.  Consider contacting the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center (which is an Alaska Public Lands Information Center) for hiking ideas.  They can tell you if Perseverance Lake Trail is a possibility.

And don't dismiss the idea of a guided tour.  Alaska wilderness is very unforgiving.  As I type this the Fairbanks Detachment of the Alaska State Troopers and other agencies are searching for a pair of out of state tourists who didn't check in on time with relatives.  Relatives called the AST to report them missing.  Their TURO rental was found in the parking lot of the Chena Hot Springs Resort.  No foul play is suspected, but they seem to have become lost on one of the trails around the resort.  It has been days now and the outcome is looking more grim by the day.

Oh man!!! I hope they're found!! Thanks so much for the advice, maybe I'll look at some guided tours afterall!

  3. Thank you so much, everyone! People in my roll call thread were telling me to pre-book, and it got me all worked up LOL!! Lyft/Uber makes a lot of sense, especially if it will be close to $60 like @princeton123211 says...I got a quote from Carmel Limo for about $100, but that included tolls/tips, and it was for 4 people including luggage. Regardless, I think I'll be a lot less anxious takin a Lyft VS stressing about late fees with a pre-booked transfer. Thanks again everyone!!!!

  4. We're sailing next Friday out of Manhattan, and flying into Newark from Toronto at 9:30am that morning. Wondering if anyone has some recent experience and can let us know how long it'll take to get through customs and baggage claim at the airport. I want to pre-book a taxi but many of them charge extra if you're late for your pick up time. Unfortunately, Norwegian isn't offering a transfer that morning otherwise we'd just do that. Thank you!!!

On the NCL website, looking at your cruise, click on Summary, then scroll down to Transfers.  This is where they will sell it to you if it is available.  As stated above, they do offer transfers from the cruise terminal to the Newark airport, so they probably offer the reverse as well.

I've tried that, but nothing comes up. It says to call them. I've tried that as well but always on hold forever and end up hanging up. Might try a private shuttle.

  6. I don't think it was your location. We were on the Lido deck with an access point right out side our door and it was super slow for us too. It reminded me of the old dial up days. This was our first trip on the Glory and we were not impressed with the food, service or ship. We have had some great trips on the Magic. I think we are heading back to the Magic this summer.

I agree with you. Before this, we cruised on the Liberty twice in a row. It was like night and day, I really didn't like the Glory much at all. And if I had to listen to that Good Morning song one more time, I was going to lose it!!!

  7. Yes to both, we have been twice and both times hiked the trail down to the beach. The cab back did wait several minutes for others before heading back to cruz bay which made us extremely nervous but just be sure to allow plenty of time.

    Carnival Destiny (6/04) Southern

What would be plenty of time? I'm really considering doing Trunk Bay on my own this time (in a month!!), but I don't know the first thing on how I would get there, or how much time to allot for travel. Any insight?

  8. When booking a cruise the other night my CVP mentioned it as a platinum/gold promotion.

Hm, that would be interesting, as I'm neither platinum nor gold (I wish!!!!!)....we're working towards it though. I was secretly hoping it was a free cruise as well! I'll keep doing "mock bookings" with it and see if anything changes. Thanks for all the great responses, everyone!

  9. We stayed in 8457 in January. Room was always cool, not so much the balcony. Like others have said, no breeze or shade at all. Fun fact, cabins 8457 and 8450 are bigger than the other aft cabins (not including the wraps, of course!). Ours fit 2 loungers, 2 chairs and a table comfortably.

  10. We just had 8457 in January, and it was INCREDIBLE!!!! The balcony was huge....fit 2 loungers, 2 chairs and a side table with lots of room left to move around. I'd book it again in a heartbeat, but you don't get much of a breeze with the aft cabins, and my DH didn't like how hot it got. If I was travelling with my sister/mom/friend, I'd book that cabin without a second thought!

  11. We just had cabin 8457 on the Liberty. It was amazing! I did my research before booking, and 8457, and the after on the other side of the ship, right next to the wrap-around balconies are about 50% bigger than the other aft cabins on that deck. We had 2 loungers, 2 chairs and a table and still had plenty of room on the balcony!!! I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Didn't have any ash problems, either.

  12. Thanks again, everyone! Our plans have changed due to scheduling time off work, so the only choice we have now is to go back on the Liberty (we were just on her last month!) I'm not complaining at all, we didn't have one bad experience on her...I guess I was just excited to try a new ship. Oh well, a cruise is a cruise, and I'm PUMPED!

  13. Thanks, everyone!!! I saw a few pics of the Glory, and it did look sort of "ugly" to me! Not once have we ever used the serenity deck (if we want quiet time, we just use our balcony)), so I don't think we'll miss it...I think I'm leaning towards the Conquest based on decor alone....makes me feel like a superficial jerk LOL.

  14. We're planning our next cruise for Oct 2014 to the W Carib, and I can't decide between the Glory or the Conquest. We were on the Liberty at the beginning of January, and it was beautiful! The Glory and Conquest have similar itineraries, so that's not a deciding factor....which do you all prefer????? Thanks!
