Sounds like a great plan to me. The Strand area by the pier is tailor made for walking, sightseeing, and killing some time.

Herman Park is a great stop if you have a car. It is in the museum district and the park is wonderful. The zoo is there and they have a train the kids love. Best place for a picnic lunch if the weather is nice.

The best place for brunch on the island is Farley Girls. It's a little ways from the pier but oh so worth it. It is over behind the Shriners Children's Hospital. I highly recommend the Shrimp and Grits.
-
Olympia grill is wonderful and down the road from the pier. I also recommend Nono Tony's . It's a pizza place next to Olympia grill. Great pizza and salad. There are quite a few restaurants in the pier area. IMO, these are the best. I've lived in the Galveston area for over 25 years and this is where we eat.

I have never been a big fan of Johnny Rockets and now that they raised their prices......NOPE
The Hubs loves it so it's all his this next cruise. I'll go eat my salad in the MDR for lunch. ;-)

The most heartwarming thing I have ever seen on a cruise was a single father cruising with his down syndrome daughter. She looked to be in her late teens. . It made my day to see them having breakfast together every morning, walking the jogging track, but the best waswhen they were at the Zumba classes on the pool deck every morning!
She would do her best to keep up and Dad was right there next to her. I thoroughly enjoyed my morning coffee watching them work out together. The joy on her face was contagious. Formal night was another treat. She was all dressed up and Dad wore his tux. Seeing them every day made my vacation twice as enjoyable.

That happened to me also. I think I was exposed at breakfast on the last day. I got home started my first day of training for a new job and came down with a 103 fever. I had remembered the woman sitting next to me st breakfast saying her husband skipped breakfast because he wasn't feeling well. We are going on AOS in May and even thought I've had my flu shot, I'm concerned. I am on my last of 12 chemo treatments. I haven't had any immunity issues so far. I hope it stays that way. I do intend to bring and wear face masks, especially when we fly. The flu is so bad in our area, we have had lots of healthy children die from it! So sad! Wash your hands people!!! I always make sure we get the flu shot a few weeks before any cruise. It takes a minimum of 2 weeks to become effective.

Bradsnana: Amen sister!!! I too go absolutely bonkers and am very vocal when I hear or observe a cruiser being condescending in any way towards staff (all of whom work their butts off to please ‘we the cruisers’. And honestly, how many of us would ever put in the kind of slave labor hours they do and receive the minuscule paychecks they receive?. Very very few, if any. And yes, I know they are very grateful for those jobs and the pay is more than they could ever get at ‘Home’. Not the point. I’ve been absolutely sick inside and ashamed that we humans can treat others as we do and not afraid one bit to stand up for any crew staff who I feel has been verbally abused. As Oprah says, “ if we know better, we do better”. Entitled brats come in all range and sizes, right?
Ok, off my soapbox. Just that I was so tickled at your last comment, had to chime in my two cents.

My thoughts EXACTLY!

Last time we cruised on Oasis, our cabin was close to the elevators. Every night around midnight, like clockwork, a group of kids would get off the elevator and storm down the hall like a herd of buffalo. Shrieking, laughing, and howling. We will NEVER book a room close to the elevators again!

We are going to St Maarten in May, Last time we explored Phillipsburg, this time I want to see more of the French side. Is Marigot worth spending the day at? Not really a beach couple but we do love to sightsee.

The smoke from the casinos is THE WORST!!! Ugh

I have found that the rudest of people I have seen are the Diamond, Diamond Plus and above. Now let me also state...NOT ALL ARE RUDE!!! I have just seen a great many.
I have an extremely hard time watching these people try to throw their weight around, belittle staff, cut in line, make demands, and threaten to withhold tips because they have sailed more than the average person. Not all of us can afford to sail 3/4 of the year. IMO, those of us that work hard all year and choose to spend our money on a vacation should receive the same respect and service as those who think they are better because they are wealthy.
A laptop in the MDR is just plain rude....no excuse
Uncontrollable kids are the worst, I taught mine respect. Something kids now days are severely lacking
Pushing your way onto the elevator UGH!
Blowing your nose on the floor!!!! OH MY GOD!
Sex in the pool.....save that for a Carnival ship
If you intentionally hit me with your scooter or wheelchair...I will turn around and say something.
If you are handicapped, I will give up my space for you willingly
I think as I get older I'm 53, I have less tolerance for rudeness and b*ll****. I will call you out if you are rude!
The incident with the gay man assaulting the waiter...You can bet I would have come to his aid in a hot second!

I'll never forget the time we were in line for Johnny Rockets to open for lunch. There was a nice orderly line with the exception of one woman. The people who were in line went in at opening and got their seats. The wait staff started to take everyone orders. This woman, who came in after all those waiting proceeded to throw a hissy fit because she had to wait.
She went so far as making them call in the head manger of all the restaurants to complain. All of us witnessing this just shook our heads. I remember saying something loud enough for her to hear but can't for the life of me remember what it was. The crew members work very hard...they don't need an entitled brat throwing a temper tantrum. It just makes me insane when I see passengers berating the crew!

A woman hand feeding a dog in a stroller in the MDR.
I think this woman was on Oasis last time we cruised. It made me NUTS!!! She had 2 dogs in a stroller. OBVIOUSLY not service dogs. If I couldn't being my dog, why was she allowed to bring hers?
Just leave them home!

Does anyone have any reviews or thoughts on the VIVO Beach Club? It's on the the list of RCCL excursions. Just wondering if it is kid friendly. I have an 11 year old grandson coming with us in December.
-
I went to the Google play store to read the reviews in the Royal IQ app.
Whoa! They say it's trash, it won't load, the messaging app didn't work 90% of the time. Constantly had to exit the app and go back in..kept crashing and says you aren't connected when you are.
Has anyone used it recently that can give us some feedback before we waste our money?

I advise buying travel insurance! If your friend should have complications a visit to the medic or god forbid, the hospital could cost thousands, and not all medical insurance covers you out of the country.
-
We had a cabin under the Windjammer and we could hear them rolling the carts super early in the mornings. It was more annoying than anything. If you are a light sleeper, avoid those cabins.

We are booked on the Oasis in March and I'm debating buying the VOOM pkg.
Is it really that much better than previous internet. We will be in a balcony room overlooking Central Park. If I purchase this, i want to be able to get decent reception in my cabin.
Has anyone used this on Oasis?

I agree...we love Nachi Cocum. It is peaceful, clean, and very enjoyable. It is our go to place for Cozumel.

I just checked my upcoming cruise's "Cruise Planner", and I can confirm it's no longer listed as an option.
RCCL just revamped all their excursions. This is the time of year they renegotiate with the tour companies. If they have lots of complaints, they will drop those companies and sign new ones. I'm quite happy with the new excursions offered for our March 2016 Oasis cruise.

Super excited that Liberty is coming to Galveston! We are looking into sailing on her before they pull her for upgrades. We have a cruise booked on Oasis in March so we need just a few more C&A points to bump us up. Looking into this one to earn those points. Plus....it's in our backyard!
