  1. We are looking at Southern Caribbean cruises for next year.  Will need to use vouchers before the end of March.  I'm looking for feedback on whether February would be better than March.  Assuming flights would be cheaper since Spring break falls in March - is that a fair assumption?  Any other factors to consider?  TIA

Our thoughts were the same, so we also booked the Basel extension. We're planning something similar for our A to B cruise in November, 2022 as there is a whole day free in Basel. One issue is the time of year - most attractions in Lucerne close 10/31. There are more things to do in Zurich that are open in November, so our plan is to go there. There are attractions walking distance from the Zurich train station, primarily the Swiss museum.

Thanks for the head's up on closing dates.  We'll look in to that.  Will also consider going to Zurich.

  3. We are doing a Rhine cruise on Viking from Basel to Amsterdam mid-December.  We booked the Basel extension through Viking.  We were thinking of skipping the walking tour of Basel the day after we arrive and instead taking a train from Basel to Lucerne for the day, returning later that same day.  Has anyone done this?  Any thoughts or recommendations?  We are just interested in the scenery and walking around.  TIA

We ended our cruise in Basel and went to Lucerne and then flew home from Zurich, so I'm not sure how this would work for you.  At disembarkation Viking arranged a taxi for us to the Basel train station (15-20 min ride).  We then took a train to Lucerne (hourly, and takes about an hour).  Lucerne station is literally in the middle of the old town.  We had a 2 night reservation at Hotel des Alpes, which was a 5 minute walk from the station, right on the river, visible from the station.  Since we had the best weather of our trip in Lucerne, we spent 2 days outside walking everywhere----along the river, to the medieval squares, along the medieval town wall, along the lake, took a lake cruise.  Ate both nights at the Rathaus Brewerie along the river, German comfort food and cheaper than most places.  The morning of Day 3 we walked back to the station and took a 1 hr train to the Zurich airport (station is in the basement of the air terminal).

You'd have to do what we did backward.  The tricky part for you would be to find out exactly where the ship is docked in Basel, and then find a taxi at the Basel station to get there.   Lucerne was definitely a highlight.  Gorgeous, gorgeous gorgeous!

I think my posts were in the 2021 Rhine Getaway thread.

OH---if you do this, you can send luggage ahead so you're not schlepping unneeded bags all over the place.  We packed all that we needed for Lucerne into one small bag.  At the Basel station we sent the rest of our bags ahead to Zurich airport station.  We picked it up when we got there.  Price was reasonable as well.

Hi - we are doing a Christmas Market cruise on Viking from Basel to Amsterdam mid-December.  We booked the Basel extension through Viking.  The extension includes a walking tour of Basel the day after we arrive, but I was thinking about taking the train from Basel to Lucerne for a day.  Would this be easy to do (in your opinion)?  Any advice?  We would just plan to walk around the town.

  5. Ok, I realize this is a long shot.  We've been to St. Maarten a couple of times now and we used the same taxi driver both times - I think his name is Big Will.  Does this ring a bell for anyone?  If so, do you have his contact info?  I've misplaced his card and we would like to use him again on an upcoming cruise.  Thanks

Did you book it yourself, online?  There was a place to indicate your preference there.

Did you book it yourself, on the phone, with RC?  The agent should have asked you.  If s/he didn't, call the customer service line and add it.

Did you book with a travel agent?  Tell your TA to do it.

    thank you

  7. We are looking to book a cruise to Canada and NE summer 2019 and would like some feedback on rooms. We've only sailed Royal Caribbean and Viking River.

About us: we will (hopefully) be sailing with friends and do not typically spend a lot of time in our rooms. This is assuming there are nice places to "hang out" on the ship and visit or play cards, etc. Although I love a balcony, I find we don't usually spend much time on them. We've never booked an interior cabin - they tend to be small for our liking. That said, our room on our Viking cruise was very small but it didn't bother us because we were only in there to shower, change and sleep.

Ocean View is only a couple hundred more than Interior, which seems like it may be worth it, but Vista Suites are double the price of an OV. Is that price "worth it" in your opinion (I get this is totally subjective)?

    TIA!

  8. We are going in 3 weeks. While I don't plan on basking in the sun with the lido roof open, the weather will be fine. I will report more when I return.

We are on Hal's veendam. We wanted heavy Canadian ports and no others are that way.

Will be interested to hear how you like it. I also prefer heavy Canadian ports. I'll probably choose to do a road trip for NE some other time.

  9. I would like to book a Canada/NE cruise for 2019. Looking for suggestions about best time to go. I don't intend to try to catch the changing of the colors since I understand that is unpredictable, and I don't want to set myself up for disappointment. I'd rather go when it's less expensive, but not if that means we have a greater chance of bad weather.

Also, is there a cruise line that does this itinerary best? We've been loyal to Royal, but I'm open to change if someone else excels on this itinerary.

    TIA!!

  10. Notamermaid - nice to see you on here! You were very helpful on our Rhine cruise in 2016.

We are sailing from Nuremberg to Budapest October 7. So looking forward to it! In the process of deciding how much time we want to spend pre and post cruise. Since some of us are still working stiffs, we have to budget our time wisely.

Hoping people will post about their cruise experiences, particularly pre and post cruise recommendations.

  11. I really want to book a Canada and New England cruise. We can only do 9 nights max. Looking for recommendations for itineraries, ships, and best time to go. Fall colors is one option - is there another time that is fantastic?

    TIA[/quote

We went on Anthem in October 2016 9 nts from Cape Liberty

Did you enjoy it? Anything you particularly enjoyed or wished you could have changed?
