  1. I'll be on Athem In December and something came to mind. This is my first time ever travelling with a person that needs wheelchair/scooter assistance on a cruise, and I was wondering how the life boat drill would work for her. I know generally the elevators are off limits during this time, but what would happen in her case? She cannot take the stairs at all, and would need to use the elevators to get down. Do they have a special protocol for people with disabilities during this time?

  2. Baby diapers that are waterproof so they don't absorb pool water.

They're diapers with almost no absorbency, they just catch any solids. Regular diapers just absorb a ton of water.

So that basically means they can pee in the pool? I don't have kids so I don't know these things

  3. On 3-4 occasions we were a group of about 12-16. One time, on a Transatlantic, we had the chef's table in the Windjammer and there were, honest to god, about 40 people. It was miserable!

What happened to the the whole intimate dinner experience?

  4. Maybe if you can fill the whole table with people from your Roll Call you might have a better chance. Both times I did this we had very active Roll Calls and many activities planned. Royal usually goes out of its way to keep us happy. This year's Roll call is already up to page 25 of part 2 with probably over 6000 posts. I've recruited enough people this time to host 3 different dinners so I'm hoping this time the staff will give us a break.

I was just talking about the people in my family filling up the chef's table.

  5. My problem with the Chef's Table is that the same menu is presented on each ship. Boring after the 3rd time so no more for me.

When we did Chef's table on Grandeur they told us to let guest services know if we booked it again on another cruise and they could tweak the menu - of course, we haven't tried that yet. Has anyone tried it/heard the same?

I wonder if they will change the menu a bit. I am hoping it is different at least since the last time the menu had a serving that included mushrooms and I had to pick around it and hope i didn't get sick because I am allergic

  6. We did CT on 2 different sailings on the Jewel. Since I had recruited other members of my Roll Call I waited until I boarded the ship and approached the manager of Chios to negotiate a private CT. We were able to get a reduced price. Sailing on the Freedom in Oct and currently have enough for 3 private CT so hopefully I can negotiate another good deal.

Woah! Time out! I didn't know his was possible. I wonder If I can do this for my trip since there are 11 of us going.

  7. I watch many of those videos (because I am weird and enjoy watching disaster videos especially before going on a trip), and most of the videos I have seen of Athem during the storms have not had waves that high. I know there was some damage to the Anthem when it apparently sailed through a hurricane, but I think people dramatize things much more than they necessarily are in certain situations. This is especially true if there is media coverage or social media coverage. I mean at least they had electricity and flushing toilets for the rest of the sailing.

  8. We're on the Anthem now, we did Chef's table the other night! I loved it, great service, amazing food and the folks who took care of us that night were tremendous! I would do it again in a heartbeat!

What day of your cruise did you choose to do it? I know on the Oasis I made the mistake of doing this too early and it set a extremely high bar for the food for the rest of the cruise.

  9. I need some honest opinions on this. I did the chef's table on the Oasis awhile back and I loved every minute of it. I am now set to go on the Anthem in December and I am really debating if it is really worth the money. Is there anyone who has done the chef's table recently? What were your thoughts? If anyone has done it on Anthem, is it any different from the other ships?

  10. How much did you have to pay for over weight luggage? Seems to me you would have saved a lot to just by the liquor locally and used a one ton pick up to get the liquor to your house.

we flew first class so it didnt matter. A lot of the stuff I picked up were things I could only get outside of the US

  11. Does anyone have an idea of how much the service would cost? Also what is the usual turn around for the service? If ehe gets his suits pressed on monday will they be back in time for the first formal night? My boyfriend has a thing about wearing freshly pressed clothing. Especially when it comes to his suits. This is his first cruise ever and I want him to feel as comfortable as possible.

  12. I think most who have responded here missed the main gist of the original post...I don't think the OP wanted to know what YOU prefer in regard to formal nights...more importantly, they wanted a sense of what to tell their newbie friends...

Look, I don't particularly like formal nights--especially now, when I tend to do longer cruises with long pre- and post-cruise stays and the airlines so severely restrict my luggage. It just makes little sense. And lines like Oceania and Azamara have NO formal nights...and Celebrity has recently gotten rid of theirs.

When we first started cruising and for many years thereafter, I always packed my tuxedo (or rented one) and tried to comply with the letter of the law. But, of late, it appears that 1) Royal Caribbean has loosened the language and enforcement a bit and 2) a large number of people, depending on ship, itinerary and time of year, are somewhat ignoring the "suggestions"...

What I've done is to drop the tux and go with what I'd call "faux formal"...pack black dockers, a black sports coat and a couple of white or black/white long sleeve shirts, maybe a tie...Allows me to be in black and white and with a coat, but without all of the hassle of all the stuff that goes with the tux. For our upcoming cruise, my wife has decided to go all casual...but some of that casual stuff will be in black/white and she'll wear that on formal nights--no long gowns, no beaded stuff or sequins or silk or chiffon...

So, what I would tell the newbies is that "tradition" is full formal attire...but that people are stretching it a bit, many rejecting it entirely...and it has now become a "suggestion" or "recommendation"...that, if they prefer to go formal, or want to have the ship's photographers photograph them in formal attire, go ahead...If they want to cheat a bit--go to a suit or a sports coat and tie for him, a cocktail dress or nice looking but more casual dress for her, go ahead and do that if you want...If they want to skip it entirely, okay...of course, still dress appropriately...don't wear shorts or swim wear or jogging suits or such to the dining room on any evening...Then I'd tell them what I was planning on wearing...and trust they might do the same...

I definitely wanted to know what to tell the newbies in regards to formal nights in the MDR, but I don't mind hearing everyone else's experiences with it . That is an awesome suggestion though. I never thought of phrasing it in that way.
