  1.

We headed back up to the pool deck to hang out until it was time for the safety drill, which was 6:30pm.

We checked in and before long it began.

Well, the safety drill was not even over until 7pm and then the hoards of crowds made it impossible to move quickly to get all the way back up to the 11th floor to participate.

You touched on it but the drill was incredibly long.

I have no idea what happened on this drill that caused it to take close to 45 minutes. I have sailed on the JotS before and do not recall the drill being this long. We had multiple "older" guests who were ushered away so they did not have to stand that long and a young lady who became faint while waiting for the drill.

The to top it all off, our Steward came by the next day and told me we had to go to another drill, because they thought we missed it. Finally I signed a piece of paper and the Steward left.

  2. We were on this sailing too!! Look forward to reading your take on the worlds longest muster drill! We stayed the night before at La Concha on Condado and had a wonderful (though far more expensive) experience. Wish I could have shared my cold a/c with you!

Ugh, I almost forgot about the Muster Drill. Thanks for reminding me.:mad::loudcry:

  3. As I sit here thinking of getting back to Jewel in one week, my mind wanders to one of the great mysteries of sailing on Royal Caribbean that, as far as I know is unique to Jewel of the Seas. SHEET BACON! I like bacon! I can't count the number of times I've been to a Windjammer on a ship and grabbed the tongs and gotten a few strips of bacon. Back in April of 2012 I had by first breakfast in Jewel's WJ and I could tell something about the way they cooked the bacon on Jewel made it come out in sheet form with pieces not really well cut. With just the supplied tongs it could be difficult to grab anything less than 8-10 pieces at a time. If I only wanted 3-5 pieces, I would have to shake the tongs and try to get the excess bacon (never used those two words together before. ) to fall into the pan and not all over the counter. In 2014 day 1 no problem, but the remaining six days the sheet bacon was back and no free cruise was offered as compensation. In about 15 days, if Diamond does still get one free internet day, I might post a picture of this phenomena.

It sure beats the Carnival cruse I took last year, where they handed you bacon when you requested it (2 strips at a time).

    Enjoy

  4. While I have not been in Chops, I disagree with the assessment of Giovanni's. We ate at Giovanni's in December on the Navigator and it was a spectacular meal. This may vary from ship to ship, but our experience was wonderful.

Fair enough. But since this was Jewell thread, I believe my comments based on my experience was worth noting.

I sincerely hope that our dinner was an exception to the rule and other ships have better quality food and service.

    Cheers

  5. Yes- running. Was there on MSC last week. THOUGH- many of the numbered 'Trolley Stop' signs are missing. You will still see the green metal posts with a triangle design where the # used to be before the Hurricane. Trolley still stops there. There are 3 routes (2 go to the Forts). You can Google the trolley map. BTW- spoke to the Park Ranger at El Morro- she said the smaller 'white' trolleys are no longer running. She said those were 'their' own trolleys (Park Service?). They were the ones that could take you ALL the way up that very long path to El Morro and drop you right at the door...

Also, if you go into just about any bar in OSJ, they will have free maps, so you can see where the trolly is supposed to stop.

  6. The beach (sand) at Rainbow was wonderful. Chairs and umbrellas were $10 each and the bar had good, strong, reasonable drinks.

In the water, the bottom drops off quickly and is quite rocky. I highly recommend wearing water shoes.

  7. Quick follow up. we did The Race and LOVED IT. So much fun.

We were paired up with another couple and ended up making friends with them. As far as this being strenuous, if you decide to run then yea, you are running in the caribbean heat, but unless you are seriously trying to win, then it is just a lot of walking.

  8. We were in Fort-du-France in Martinique in January. They take only euros. Very displeased with port. Needed euros to pee. Seriously. No toilet paper and cashier handed out the toilet paper and wouldn’t take US. The perfume shop clerk and guard just stared at me when I tried to enter. Eventually I found a button to push on the wall. (All instructions were in French.) At the restaurant/pizzeria, we ordered beers and said we would like to order pizza. Brought beers and menus but never came back for our pizza order. Guess that is more info than you wanted, but just my way of saying don’t expect anyone to take US$ there.

We exchanged dollars for Euro's and then found that restaurants and bars in FdF mostly took both.

  9. Book on your own. The ship excursion is a large catamaran with about 30 people on it.

I went in with very high expectations for the cost, and have to say it may one of the best 3 tours we have ever done.

Also for the person asking if they will enjoy this tour without snorkeling... It is a lovely cruise with great foot and plenty to drink and see.

And lastly, I don't understand the post about husband not being able to swim. What is the expectation of the crew?

    Enjoy

  10. I think it varies per cruise sailing, or even by night. Sometimes Chops way outshines Giovannis, and sometimes it's the other way around. It's a crap shoot pretty much.

Going in blind...I usually end up with Chops if having only one choice. I love the Forest Mushroom soup and the steak.

On our last Jewel cruise, we had great service and food in Chops, but Givoannis was a disaster for service. Next time...could be the other way around.

We too had a disaster in Givoannis. I will give them the benefit of the doubt, and hope that other have a different experience.

  11. We have done the tour through RCL every time we cruise out of San Juan, for a couple of reasons. 1. It gives us something to do until our flight at 2:30. 2. We don't have to haul our luggage all over the place.

Basically you meet up once you collect your bags and then head to a bus (Your bags go on a seperate truck). They drive you to the tour and you spend some time doing the tour, riding a tram, tasting a few drinks and then to the gift shop. After that you get on the bus and do a brief city tour and then off to SJU. I would say you get to the airport around 12:30 or so and your bags are waiting for you.

It makes for a nice relaxing final day IMO

  12. Sailing on the Jewel this May, first time on RCL. Are there any complementary evening shows onboard this ship? In NCL and Disney we could reserve spots on all shows, even the free ones. But on RCL Cruise Planner it seems all that can be reserved are the activities you pay extra for. Just wanted to know to better plan our dining schedules. Thank you!!!

I don't remember the theater ever being very full, especially after the first night as the entertainment on Jewell of the Seas has a reputation for being pretty bad. We never had to rush in and get a seat, so that is the good thing.
