  1. Audioguides can be rented at the Palatine Hill ticket office for 5 euros. If you follow the suggested tour, it takes about 2 hours (but I'd probably allow a little longer).

I have not used them, so I can't give a thumbs up or thumbs down. But there's very little signage on the site, and (like the Forum), all the ruins can be difficult to decipher if you're not an expert. Plus, with all the meandering pathways, it's easy to miss important things -- like the iron age hut of Romulus and Remus, or the small museum on site, or the cryptoporticus where it is thought that bad boy Emperor Caligula was murdered by the Praetorian Guard: http://www.romanhideout.com/News/2008/20080105.asp

Again, we THANK YOU Cruisemom for your excellent help!:)

  2. I think most of us who travel frequently absolutely understand and promote the message of broadening one's horizons and appreciating each other and our cultures but I find it difficult to believe than anyone would not get the political connotation of this ad, not to mention that they have chosen to air it during the debates.

Regardless of who one may support politically, I think it is a very foolish thing for a public corporation to do.

    Agree

  3. It's not a dumb question, it can be a little confusing.

The ticket covers 3 places: Palatine Hill, the Roman Forum, and the Colosseum. You can visit any or all of these -- you don't have to re-visit the Colosseum if you don't want to.

For the last couple of years, you can visit Augustus' House and Livia's House only be reserving in advance to do so. As the site says, you have to also purchase the overall Palatine Hill/Forum/Colosseum ticket in order to reserve these visits (which makes sense, as that's how you get in to the area).

For either of the two houses you can choose EITHER a tour with a guide, which is more expensive, or just an accompanied visit -- which means an employee will walk with you, unlock the door(s) and wait while you look around on your own. They will not give you any information about what you're seeing. The choice is up to you.

Thank you so much! You are a wealth of info. and such a help for all of us to enjoy Rome!:)

  4. Sorry, I just saw this.

The Palatine Hill entrance is definitely less crowded than the other entrances. Unless you get there just after a busload of tourists has been dumped out, there is not usually much of a line.

I enjoy the park-like atmosphere of the Palatine Hill. Be sure to take some notes or guidebook with you as signage is minimal (you will find some directional signs to various areas but not much explanation). In addition to the main remains of the palace, some things not to miss include the Cryptoporticus (look for original, tiny mosaic stones that remain, here and there) which is thought to be the place where Caligula was murdered. You may be able to see the remains of the iron-age hut that was lovingly tended by the later Romans as the home of Romulus and Remus, the founders of the city. Advance reservations are generally required to see the House of Augustus and the House of Livia (well worth it). And there is a small but interesting museum that many people miss.

After touring Palatine Hill, you can walk down into the Forum.

Thanks so much for your guidance! A couple more questions please - First, we know we will be getting a ticket that covers both the forum and colosseum. I'm assuming we don't have to go to the colosseum at all. Second, when I went to the site to order tickets for the items you mentioned I saw this statement - "It's possible to visit the Augutus' House and Livias' House only with accompanied or guided tour for fee. ". Is it just meaning the extra fees to enter these or something else again. It does state that you can't order tickets for these unless you get the forum/colosseum tickets. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

    Thanks

  5. Cruisemom42 - you always have such wonderful info, I was wondering if you have any experience with entering the Roman Forum from Palantine Hill and getting the tickets there too. Another board member suggested that as a less congested entry when I had asked about buying tickets in advance. I know the tickets include the Colosseum but we did that last time. Thanks.

  6. I was trying to find a taxi fare between Naples and Pompeii and came across the site below. It provides the taxi fare between any two locations in many countries.

Has anyone used it and is it accurate?

    Thanks for your input.

    timolin

We've used the one in Rome and it was always ok.

  7. Not sure I understand the comment about it being in cans?

I like San Crispino, but the flavors tend to be understated, not BIG and BOLD. As I said above, not a big fan of Giolitti. Of course, that's not to say I'd turn down a cup. :D

    Thanks for the reply!

Cans with lids as opposed to open trays.

Thanks for the link, we won't be near those I don't think.

  8. Was curious about this. When we were in Rome in April, we went to Teatro because of comments and thought it was ok. We will be back in April 1017 and expect to try Giolitti. We have understood that it's even more authentic when it is in cans.

Or maybe the one in cans was San Crispino?

  9.

I have to agree with the author about Giolitti; it's never been a favorite of mine. I really REALLY liked the gelato at Gelateria del Teatro; I find it hard to believe it has gone so downhill in the year since I last tried it....

  10. Oh, ok, well I'm not much help then...hopefully it'll get sorted soon

    Thanks for trying!

Its due to a corrupted cookie. I had it also in Chrome.

You have to find out how to delete the cookies in your browser. You only have to delete the cookies for cruisecritic.com You will probably have to log back in again after doing so.

    Will try that. Thanks!

  11. That's been happening to me too...but only when I use chrome...I switched to Safari when checking CC and haven't had any problem. Very frustrating as I generally prefer Chrome...

Chrome Book is what I use. Haven't had this problem before with it. May have to just use my phone if it doesn't stop. Darn!

  12. Are you saying the standard price without discount was $169? If this is the case there is a huge discrepancy between the prices on the US site and the UK site because I paid a lot more than $169. I suppose the other important question is when did you book it and in particular how close to your sailing date?

This whole internet pricing thing is confusing me greatly.

No, I think the cc said that the beginning price was $299. I guess they had dropped the price on the "manage" site to $269 and that's what we thought we would be paying. But when we called cc as suggested on here, he said we had a discount coming.

We booked it yesterday and our sail date is April 22, 2017 for 16 days.

I see where I typed the incorrect amount of $169 instead of $269! I do apologize. I have to admit, by this time and all the reading, my mind is turning to mush!
