  1. You really don't know what"s happening behind the private screen. I learned that the host was going home for extensive surgery and was called back from the airport to the ship. He received highly negative comments on that cruise. He was one of the most popular hosts. You never know what's happening so be careful with your comments!

I generally check my Xpress pass a week before the sailing.  If it doesn't have PALL I call and get them to add the complimentary packages.

The Xpress pass may contain PALL, but the Seapass says CALL. It was twice caught by a servers  in the buffet who brought me a slip for drinks.

Long term, yes they would bring in an emergency Captain. But in the meantime, the Staff Captain would be in charge. At least I'm pretty sure when I was on the Edge and Captain Kate was doing her spiel at Muster (this was pre-Covid when it was old-school) she said that in the event she was incapacitated, the Staff Captain would be in charge, and if he was then whoever is the third in command would be, and if all three of them were incapacitated we could assume we were having a better day than any of them.

And eventually a Staff Captain could be promoted full-time to a Captain.

Many great Staff Captains have been promoted to Captain.

  4. The Staff Captain is the second in command. They are in charge of discipline. They are fully licensed, but rarely take over for the Captain.I've never heard that that happened since my first cruise in 1977. The Captain is usually replaced by another Captain in an emergency situation. Captain Tasos was asked to take over another ship when the Captain was delayed. At one time a Staff Captain was temporarily promoted to a Captain so he could take over for a ill Captain.

You must be the exception; however, I was able to move from concierge to what is now called a sunset suite for 150 pp on a long Med cruise.  The room attendant/butler was pretty much MIA, but not an issue at all.  My DH and I just were happy to sit on our balcony and feel blessed.

You did well indeed, but a true upgrade involves no cost to the passenger. That's the way it used to be before the move-up.

I booked a last minuteish cruise and just realized it is Presidents Cruise.  Does this have any advantages / disadvantages?

I been on several. A disadvantage is the price of the cruise. The advantages are that there are special events that might make your cruise special.
