Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. We just booked this for April 14, 2025 (with the tour of Amsterdam and Bruge) and started a roll call. We booked one of the 4 suites on the Monarch Countess. I can't seem to find any reviews of these suites. Does anyone here have any thoughts? They are listed as "suites," but they are not overly large and I don't think they come with any special services (as do suites on most cruise lines). My wife is disappointed that they don't have bathtubs.
  2. Or perhaps this one from 1957: "A white sport coat and a pink carnation I'm all dressed up for the dance"
  3. We've got an "Azamazing" amount of onboard credits for a seven-day cruise. Can we use some of our OBC to buy a dining package for some friends who are also taking the same cruise?
  4. Old topic, but new question. We've got an Azamazing amount of onboard credits for a short cruise. Can we use some of our OBC to buy a dining package for some friends who are also taking the same cruise?
  5. We got to the dining room a bit early one "informal" night (jackets required for men) and sat outside waiting for the restaurant to open. The gentleman sitting next to us said that he had come to the restaurant the previous informal night without a jacket, and they actually had a jacket there for him. (Way too big he said.) Boy, I haven't seen that for at least 30 years!
  6. Overall, we found Silversea to be fantastic. Food was top notch. Service was great. Could say much more about how much we enjoyed the cruise. Compared to the superlatives for just about every other aspect of the cruise, the dress code was, well, silly. On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being fantastic) the dress code is a 4, while the food was a 10.
  7. Way back 34 pages ago, I started this thread. I had booked, but only later learned of the dress codes. (This was my first Silversea cruise.) We loved the cruise, but when telling fiends about it we always mention the old-fashioned dress code. Most who have not sailed Silversea will say something like, "Really?"
  8. Most likely they will be loose.... I've lost a bit of weight. I'll just have to pull the belt a bit tighter.
  9. Interesting. I'll bet most retired passengers will have had the opposite experience. I have a closet full of sport coats, suits, and ties that I haven't worn since I retired. My wife encourages me to toss them all. Now we're going on vacation and I'm going to be wearing them once again. Pretty strange.
  10. Going on the Silver Shadow on August 14 - our first with Silversea. I started this thread, and I got my answer to the immediate question I presented, but I agree that the "wild posts" here are very worrisome. For us, the experience of travelling is bound very closely to our experience with our fellow travelers.
  11. Well, actually there are "suggestions." Clothing Suggestions – Shipboard Attire Shipboard attire ranges from casual to formal. Casual wear is appropriate for daytime aboard ship or ashore and consists of standard sports outfits as worn at five-star resorts. Shoes should be flat or low heeled for deck activities. Evening attire falls into three categories: casual, informal and formal. On casual evenings, pants, blouses, skirts and casual dresses for ladies; open-neck shirts and slacks for gentlemen are appropriate. On informal evenings, ladies usually wear dresses or pantsuits; gentlemen wear jackets (tie optional). Appropriate formal evening wear for ladies is an evening gown or cocktail dress; gentlemen wear tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits. Tie is required. On formal nights, guests may dine in La Terrazza and choose to dress informal; dresses or pantsuits for ladies, jackets for gentlemen (tie optional). This option also applies to Seishin on board Silver Spirit, Kaiseki on board Muse, Moon and Dawn. Dining at The Grill and Spaccanapoli is optional casual all nights. Following dinner, all guests are free to take advantage of any or all public spaces, however, jacket is required. Sailings of 9 days or less typically feature 1 formal night, while longer voyages usually have 2-3 formal nights. Details will be provided in your final cruise documents, but the chart below provides a basic guideline to assist in packing the proper attire. Please note: On 7-day sailings, the formal night is always optional; guests may choose to dress informally, but a jacket is required for gentlemen. 12. Will be boarding the Silver Shadow in Quebec City in a couple weeks - our first-time cruise with Silversea. Just wondering.... In the past, many cruise lines would offer service club meetings ((I am a Rotarian) and crew members would often host these. Is this something that is done aboard Silversea?
  13. Some suggestions on formal attire: Men should wear tuxedo style suits with white bows, and with top hats and polished shoes. Women should wear tight laced corsets and expensive tailored gowns with gloves. Ladies should use the formal dinners to show off their best dresses. During the dinners, they should wear gowns, satin shoes or leather shoes. They should also have long white gloves, a scarf, and a opera fan. During the formal dinners, men should wear a white tie, tailcoats, and a white pique waistcoat. While these outfits were impractical for life on board ship, they made a statement of wealth and status.... (See: What did 1st Class Passengers Wear on the Titanic - Buy and Slay.)
