    ?? Why only pre 1999?

I put the quarters that were made in 1999 and after 1999 into my saving account for a rainy day.  It is nice to have a rainy day fund for unexpected bills (last year, for example, I had dental work done that was not covered by my dental insurance so I used the money from my rainy day fund to pay for it).

Every year, I shave my head for my St. Baldrick's fundraiser every year and I donate the dimes I save all year long to St. Baldrick's.  The St. Baldrick's Foundation raises money for childhood cancer research thru head shaving events.

I save the nickels to spend on my nieces and nephew.

I save the pennies but I don't know what I am going to do with those.

  2. So for your next cruise, how do you save money to use for spending money?

One thing I do is I save quarters (United States quarters) that were made before 1999 (picture below of the quarters I am saving).  The bank I use allows me to deposit coins without paying a fee.  So a few weeks before my cruise, I will deposit the coins into my bank account.  This is not all the money I am taking with me, it just some of the money I am planning on taking with me.

  3. I am going on the Norwegian Breakaway out of New Orleans.  Seven days cruise and I leave on March 31, 2018.  The last time I cruise with NCL, it was April 2014.  Is there any changes with NCL that I should be aware of since 2014?  By what I heard, one of the rules is I can no longer carry a case of coke onto the ship like I did in 2014?

I sailed with Carnival Cruise Line in 2015 and in 2016.  Carnival Cruise Line and NCL are both great cruise lines in my opinion but I am excited to be returning to NCL.  I am especially happy that one of NCL's cruise ships that have the studio cabins will be sailing out of New Orleans.

  4. Every year, I stay at the Best West Western St. Charles Inn (

3636 St Charles Ave) in Uptown New Orleans for the Irish Channel St. Patrick's Day Parade. In front of the hotel is the St. Charles streetcar line which provides convenient access to the French Quarter. The hotel is only three stories tall.

I march in the parade. I have no problem go up the stairs after the parade when I am sore and tired (the parade is a long walk).

You might also want to check out Hampton Inn New Orleans St. Charles Ave./Garden District (

3626 St. Charles Ave). I never stayed there before so I do not know how the stairs are but it does not look like a tall hotel.

  5. One of my friends from Where's George stays at the Holiday Inn New Orleans West Bank Tower every year for the

    Stay, Park, & Cruise deal.

Here is a video on their Facebook page that explains their stay, park & Cruise deal:

  6. Starting in May 2019, the Carnival Triumph, based in New Orleans, will be replaced by the Carnival Valor, which currently sails from Galveston, according to a news release sent Thursday (Nov. 16).

The Carnival Glory, which is now based in Miami, will move to New Orleans, replacing the larger Carnival Dream, which will move on to homeport in Galveston, Texas.

I am wondering how the Carnival Valor and the Carnival Glory are compared to the Carnival Triumph and the Carnival Dream?

I been on the Carnival Triumph (April 2017) and the Carnival Dream (April 2016) and enjoyed both. I just hope that the Carnival Glory and Carnival Valor are just as good if not better.

  7. I saw this on the Hampton Inn & Suites New Orleans page and thought you might want to look at it:

  8. One of my friends stays at the Holiday Inn because they have a park and cruise deal.

    Holiday Inn New Orleans Westbank:

From their web-site "PACKAGE INCLUDES OUR LUXURIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS. PARKING FOR THE DURATION OF YOUR CRUISE AND BON VOYAGE BREAKFAST FOR 2 BEFORE YOU DEPART. TRANSPORTATION TO THE CRUISE PORT IS NOT INCLUDED IN PACKAGE PRICING."

My friend has stayed at the Holiday Inn New Orleans Westbank (Gretna, LA), at Holiday Inn Express & Suites New Orleans Airport South (Saint Rose, LA) and Holiday Inn Metairie New Orleans Airport (Metairie, LA) because they all have a park and cruise deal. One of the people I met when I was on my last cruise, said that they stayed at the Holiday Inn New Orleans-Downtown Superdome (New Orleans) because they had the park and cruise but they had to call the hotel to get the deal at that Holiday Inn. I believe at each hotel, they had to take a taxi to the port.

  9. Holiday Inn New Orleans Westbank

The link above is a video on the Holiday Inn New Orleans Westbank (located in Gretna, Louisiana) that deals with their deal with their deal they have for people going on a cruise and the deal they have. Most of the Holiday Inn in the New Orleans area has this deal but some of them do not have it on their web-site (I know the Holiday Inn located near the Superdome, you have to call to get the deal). Some Holiday Inn Hotels have the deal on their web-site.

Hampton Inn & Suites New Orleans Convention Center:

This is the Facebook post the Hampton Inn & Suites New Orleans Convention Center posted on their Facebook page "Did you know we're the closest hotel to the Port of New Orleans cruise terminal? We also offer a FREE shuttle to/from the port and discounted parking while you're on the cruise.

If you're planning a Carnival Cruise Line vacation be sure to check out our cruise package: Hampton Inn & Suites New Orleans-Convention Center Cruise Package

  10. What is the best area to stay in for 3 days prior to cruise? We want to do a lot of site seeing and wasn't sure what area has easiest access to street cars or tour stops. Any advise!

In the Uptown/Garden District area, they have at least three hotels on the St. Charles trolley lines:

    1) Best Western St. Charles Inn

    2) Hampton Inn - St. Charles Ave/Garden District

    3) Clarion Hotel Grand Boutique

I think you might prefer staying in the French Quarter area or the Central Business District (Central Business District is also called the C.B.D.). But I just wanted to give you a few more options that you can check out.

  11. One of my friends from Where's George has stayed at Holiday Inn in Metairie, LA and the one at the Holiday Inn in St. Rose, LA. She told me that at certain Holiday Inns in the SouthEast Louisiana, if you stay there for an X amount of days, you get to leave your car there for free while you are on your cruise. Might be something you need to check out.

  12. I showed your post to one of my friends, Alaa, who is active in two different Westbank Civic Associations and he said

"I would say, this is a decent choice if you are looking to save some money. Bearing in mind it is about 12 minutes from the French Quarter and CBD. I've actually had family stay there and they said it was safe and clean and convenient. Police station is right around the corner and they are a stones throw away from everything if they need to pick something up quickly while at the hotel".

  13. I am in that area often (restaurants, shopping at businesses, est.) and I have never felt unsafe in the area.

If there is no traffic on the bridge or on Manhattan Blvd, you can get to the cruise ship terminal in less than 30 minutes.

Two other hotels that you may want to check out is the Hampton Inn in Harvey, LA and the Courtyard Marriot in Gretna. There are other hotels on the Westbank, but I have stayed at the Hampton Inn in Harvey for a staycation and enjoyed it. I also had a friend that stayed at the Courtyard Marriot and he enjoyed it.

  14. Hi everyone -

I met with French America Line when I was down in Louisiana a few weeks ago. Info about their plans, including the Gretna wharf, is in this story about Mississippi River cruising: http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=7058.

The line plans to put passengers up in New Orleans at the Monteleone Hotel in the French Quarter and then bus them over to the Gretna terminal.

Thanks. On Facebook, I shared your article on the Terrytown Business Association Facebook page.

  15. Where exactly is the old Gretna ferry landing located? I only know the Canal Street Ferry and Perry Street Wharf.

There used to be a ferry that connected Gretna, Louisiana to Jackson Ave in Uptown New Orleans. They no longer run that route but the structures are still there. Now, during special events (usually only GretnaFest in October), they run a ferry from Gretna, Louisiana to the Canal Street.
