  1. 3 times on the Dream, 3 times with AC working just fine. Deck 8 interior, deck 2 porthole, & deck 1 deluxe OV. In the OV this last January, it could get very cold if turned all the way down. I haven't read the complaints about it, but it's good to know that the Dream is like the kid in class that everybody picks on for no reason, sometimes even making things up. If you want to be cool or popular, you'll pick on him too. But if you give him a fair chance, you may just wind up with the best friend you could possibly have.

I sure hope to be best friends with the Dream after my time on her!

  2. I have taken a fan on every cruise and it has never been taken. It is always new or new looking with a great cord. That is concerning to me!!

How big of a fan are you talking about?

It seems with as much $$$$ we put out for our cruises that they could make us comfortable in our cabins. If folks like a warm cabin, they can make the temperature warmer......but, for those of us who like it freezing cold when it's hot and humid outside, I would like the option of having my cabin that way.

Hopefully, it won't be an issue. We have connecting balcony cabins 8436-8440. Unfortunately, I always have to keep the curtains drawn to keep the room cool....but, I will substitute staying cool for not being able to see my beautiful view.

  3. I've read so many complaints about the temperature in the cabins on DREAM being "warm" instead of ......well......air conditioned! Has anyone had a room on DREAM that was actually cool/cold in temperature? I really don't want to be hot all week in my cabin. We plan on having a balcony cabin somewhat AFT.

  4. Please clarify; I've seen the "cabanas" in pictures and they are nothing but a square tent, no sides or anything, correct? They are not like the cabanas that you'd find on a private island, little huts with walls, etc., correct?

I would much prefer the little tiki hut cabanas if anyone knows where I can rent one of those.....but, yes.....the only one I see in the photo is just a tent with no walls.

  5. We've stayed at the Drury Inn on Poydras and have been pretty happy with it. We're planning on staying there again in August when we travel out of NOLA.

Does the Drury Inn offer a shuttle to the port? How far is it to port? Were you satisfied with their happy hour and breakfast at the hotel?

  6. Anyway, I had a question, I forgot to add. Do both in the cabin have to get the drink package? Just got off the Caribbean Princess last week, our 1st and last Princess cruise. Princess is not what they say they are. Food was terrible, staff worse. No bartender knows what a Chocolate Martini is. But the Princess website says both in cabin have to get the package, but onboard they say no, only one has to. Which is good, the wife can sip 1-2 a day, so its not worth it. Hope I can get the package only.

Will you please report back after your cruise to let me know how the air conditioning on the ship is now? I'm hoping in the summer months they allow the passengers to be "cool" instead of "luke warm"........ugh!

  7. My cruise is in 2015, but I book my train travel a year ahead of time. I tried to use the 2014 V875 code ( a 2014 code) for my 2015 travel, but I couldn't use it. I was told I would have to wait for the 2015 code whenever it comes out. Thought this was strange, but I'm willing to keep a watchful eye on the 2015 Carnival code and then call back to have my tickets re-issued. Amtrak 800# also told me there were restrictions and black outs with the Carnival code and they only allot a certain amount of seats.

If anyone hears of the 2015 code, please post it!!

  8. I have taken Amtrak several times to NOLA cruise port. I enjoy it, actually, USUALLY. The last trip was not as fun, due to such a high volume of passengers. Usually I have been able to stretch out across two seats during the night. Not so that trip....and even got scolded for trying to, they "didn't want to have to wake me up when more passengers got on" and "you should have bought another ticket if you wanted to lay down". Not nice remarks from conductors. So I and everyone else had to sleep sitting straight up. I did manage to go to Observation car in the middle of night and get a couple hours of sleep though.

Anyway, usually I have found it to be a great way to travel to cruises. No baggage restrictions, you can move around freely, etc. The terminal usually has lots of taxis waiting to take you anywhere you need to go.

Left central Illinois at about 10:30 pm, got to NOLA the next day at 3:30 p.m. Plenty of time to enjoy an afternoon and evening in New Orleans before cruise the following day. Approximately 17 hours travel.

Had a sleeper car once, with three girls it was too crowded. So just got coach seats after that.

It was reasonable, around 200 per roundtrip ticket. That is from central Illinois to NOLA. Sleeper adds additional price if you want that.

If it is during a time of holidays or spring breaks, it can be very crowded...just watch for that.

I'm surprised to hear that you had to sleep sitting up? The Amtrak coach seats recline really far back (almost to a laying position). They should have told you that. I'm sorry the conductors were rude to you. I have never had that experience myself and would not take it lightly if it happened. Hopefully, that was just a one time instance.

  9. I agree with you 100%. For our first cruise back in 2002 we took Amtrak from Chicago to New Orleans because DH thought our daughter should experience a train trip. It was the longest 18 hours of my life. Don't base the cost just on train fare versus airfare. If you take the train and it is a long ride you need to factor in the cost of food. Food in the dining car on amtrak is on the pricy side. With our ride from hell we lift Chicago at 8 PM and arrived in NOLA the next afternoon at 2 PM, so we needed both breakfast and lunch on the train. Returning home we left NOLA at 2PM and arrived in Chicago at 8 AM the next morning, so we had to have dinner on the train. Besides eating there is absolutely nothing to do. You can only play cards for so long before that gets old.

I totally disagree. I have taken Amtrak from east to west and north to south routes for years now. SO much more relaxing then flying and driving. Yes, it takes longer but you aren't restricted to your seat (ever) and can walk around from car to car, read books, watch movies on your laptop, play games in the observation car, have a glass of wine (or two), take awesome naps (I sleep like a baby on trains) and the list goes on and on. Yes, traveling by train takes much longer, but it's all stress FREE travel. Can't wait for my next trip!

  10. I just got off the phone with Amtrak and gave them the code and she couldn't find anything about it. She said I would have to contact Carnival. Help!!! Our trip is next month but was hoping for a adjustment.

I got the code by emailing their customer service department just 2 weeks ago. This is the code for 2014.

Amtrak customer service is known for it's lack of knowledge on the phone. I usually have to hang up and call back to find an agent that is seasoned. Sometimes, I get a good one on the first try.....but, it's rare.

You can always email customer service and ask for their help? They responded back to me within 24 hours.

  11. Thank-You. I am going to call Amtrak tomorrow to find out what the TA discount is. My colleague told me on Friday that the discount at one time was 25%. Every little bit of savings helps

They also have a Carnival Cruise discount. A lot of the customer service reps who answer the phone don't even know about it. I had to call several times before I finally got the current code for 2014 which is V875. Hope that helps you out too!

  12. Yeah it is the City of New Orleans route. It leaves Chicago around 8:30 pm and arrives into New Orleans at 3:30 pm. It sounds like a fun way to travel and an interesting way to see the sights along the way.

When we drive I do all the driving so it would be nice to just sit back and enjoy the trip.

Thanks for getting back to me

I always take the train to all the ports before a cruise. Soooo relaxing, but yes, it does take longer to get there and can be expensive if you get a sleeper.

I will be on the Dream June 2015 and am going to take the train from Chicago to New Orleans.

  13. For those who took Amtrak POST cruise out of New Orleans, did you have any trouble getting to the station after you debarked the ship? Were cabs available or did they not want to take you as the previous poster said?

If you have a review of the train trip, will you please post the link of it?
