I'm a Brit living in Oz for the last ten years and have been appalled at the Travel insurance scam here.
In the UK you get a quote for insurance, tell them your "relevant" previous history and the insurer will usually accept it or charge an extra premium.
In Oz, the "previous conditions" are usually defined as anything you've ever seen a doctor about, or which you "should" have recognised as a complaint. Anyone over the age of fifty will probably have any part of their body come under this category! Unlike the UK, the insurer often will write the policy but exclude all these largely irrelevant complaints from fifty years ago.
The net result is that you pay the premium, think you are covered, but in the event of a claim which in all honesty is nothing to do with your history you find you are not.
It stinks.

I have an Olympus and a Canon DSLR, also a cheapo Fuji compact. Having got fed up with carting the DSLR around the world (plus an unfortunate incident involving cabin bag, Canon, bottle of chardonnay and a drop onto concrete - don't ask) I would like to buy a decent compact DSLR.
The Fuji provides great pictures, but the screen is so dim that even in dull outdoor light it's impossible to frame a shot. "Point and shoot" is more than just a phrase!
Has anyone any first hand recommendations for a compact that has a really bright screen?

I'm arriving at Papeete cruise pier on the 4th January: does anyone know if there's an ATM or currency exchange machine on the pier for taxi payment? Last time I was there we arrived at the airport and had no problem.
