  1. On January 11 of 2017, I'll be on the Star Trek Cruise in Cozumel from 8am to 8pm. I've been to Cozumel 3 times before, but NEVER for a whole 12 hours! Normally, we go to Nachi Cocom, but this time I'm by myself and I'm seriously considering just staying on the ship to enjoy the Trekkie atmosphere.

But. What if I decide to change my mind? Has anyone ever made same day reservations for Nachi? I know the 100 person limit is a possibility on that point, but if it was possible, I might just wait an decide the day or. Or the perhaps the day before.

And the 12 hours. Does anyone have recommendations for evening type things in Cozumel? I can just stay on the boat during the day, and wander off later when all the sunburned people are starting to trickle back inside!

  2. Alcohol is not a carbohydrate, so shouldn't really have an effect on blood sugar. If a person is diabetic and takes insulin or other medications they should check with their doctor or pharmacist to see if drinking alcohol is contradicted. Persons on a low carbohydrate diet for diabetes or otherwise do need to consider that beer is high in carbs, and wines may or may not be, depending on the variety. Most unflavored hard alcohol is low in carbs/sugars.

While alcohol is generally 'low carb', it very much does have an effect on blood sugar. As a Type 1 diabetic (previously called juvenile onset, the one where we have to take insulin), I have to be very careful about eating while drinking, otherwise I will end up with a dangerously low blood sugar the morning after. I'm assuming she's more likely a Type 2, but the affects still stand.

On this point, I actually try to drink things that do have a little (little. not regular soda, no straight juice, but a little) bit of sugar in them to help counteract the low blood sugar inducement of alcohol.

  3. In January 2017, I'll be on my first cruise by myself. I've been to Cozumel 4 times with the manly half, but I just don't know what the best thing to do on my own is. Three out of our four last visits we went to Nachi Cocom, and loved it every time, but I don't know if sitting on the beach by myself drinking is quite as healthy. XD

It's also a fairly long stop, we dock at 8am, and don't leave until 8pm, so I feel like surely there must be something good in that time frame.

Anyone have any outings that might lend themselves to the solo traveler? I'm not particularly social (or anti-social), so any sort of group/solo dynamic would work fine.

  4. I used shoreexcursioneer for a tour that included a flight first to San Pedro on a small plane. Then off to hol chan and shark ray alley. See the post above titled "shark ray alley vs stingray city in grand cayman" Also, I was the only one on the tour, and they still went. I would totally recommend them...

Thank you so much! That works out perfectly.

  5. Any recommendations for companies who do the Shark Ray Alley snorkeling excursion? We signed up for one ages ago, but I got an email canceling it because not enough people signed up for our date. I'd prefer one that includes all transportation from the Tourist Village, but I'll take any idea at this point. I've sent messages to at least 4 or 5 other companies, and every one seems to have an intensely low turnout for this excursion. :(

  6. We were on Navigator last year for Halloween. It also fell on formal night, which was pretty funny. There was a parade with a LARGE turnout, and bunches of costumes. There was a Halloween themed show that evening which was rather nice, too. They had a costume contest and then a dance party afterwards. I was very sad that we only got second place in the costume contest. I don't know what they did for the younglings, since we don't have any.

  7. We've done two Carnival (Triumph, so not a new ship) and our second RC is coming up (17 days! Navigator). Quite honestly, there aren't any huge differences. We found the entertainment on Carnival to be better (we actually had to leave one of the RC shows, they were THAT bad), the food about the same. Room service on RC was a hair better. I'd choose either of them, mostly dependent on price and ports. Maybe there's a generational difference? Professional late 20's us, versus cruisers in their 40s, or beyond. We didn't notice any hardcore party nonsense on our Carnival trips, but we weren't cruising during a child/young people heavy period.

  8. With the BOGO deal they offered, we're trying the Premium package for the first time in November on the Navigator. I'm going to try and upgrade to the Ultimate on board though, since they wouldn't let me upgrade without paying full price when I made our reservation.

We got the Replenish on last year's trip, and it was easily, easily worth it. Just pop up in the morning for a latte, grab a frappucino in the afternoon, maybe another latte in the evening. I don't know if we saved any money (we probably broke even) but the convenience of not having to look at the receipt and go 'goodbye another $10' was utterly worth it. And we'll only need 3-4 drinks a day to break even, which will be no problem, particularly averaged out between sea days and port days.

The only 'downside' is we'll skip our usual all inclusive beach hangout in Cozumel (because why bother when we've got drinks on the ship?), so we'll have to come up with some other way to spend the day. XD

  9. Last year on the Navigator, we got the Royal Replenish (soda, coffee, non-alcoholic drinks) package, and loved it to bits. All of the coffee, all day. Just last month I reserved our next trip (again, on the Navigator) and figured that since it was offered, I'd sign up for the BOGO half off Premium package. I can always take it off before we leave, so why not?

BUT. I asked about upgrading it to the ultimate package and the perfectly nice CS rep I talked to said that she couldn't do it without losing the 50% off the second package deal, and that I'd have to talk to someone on the ship to see if they could/would. I'd have no problem paying the full upgrade cost (I mean, it's $6 a day, that's practically just one coffee!) but I wondered if anyone had any experience with asking about it, or possibly getting the upgrade under the BOGO50 deal, even without it actually applying to the upgrade itself. I know this BOGO deal has been going for awhile now, so if anyone has had any experience with that aspect, be lovely and let me know? Thanks guys!

  10. There won't be any particularly 'good' snorkeling off any of the all inclusive beaches. For good snorkeling you have to go out further in a boat (which costs extra), or go to one of the rock beaches.

We always go to Nachi Cocum and enjoy ourselves. There's a bit of coral, and lots of fish under the dock to look at. It's also not aimed at children in particular, though. You might take a look at Mr Sancho's for more young person aimed beaches. It's supposed to be good, although we've never gone there.

  11. oh and this is way off topic, but since we are discussing drinks...

i see budweiser (i think it's budweiser???) has a strawberry margarita beer??? Does that taste a lot like beer or? Probably a dumb question...just wondering because I'm heading to a baseball game in a few weeks and I remember that being the first place I saw it.

They have a variety of flavors, including strawberry, raspberry and mango-ritas. I don't think they particularly taste like beer (I don't care for beer, myself) but the only one I can manage to drink is the mango flavored one. None of them are particularly tasty.

  12. I'm looking for snuba recommendations in Cozumel for an October visit. We've visited twice, but never done anything more than an off the beach self guided snorkel, and the Manly One really wants to try this snuba thing out.

Anybody had a particularly good experience (or a bad one, that we can avoid?) Thanks guys!

  13. Anyone have experience with using an Amex gift card in any fashion on Carnival? We're leaving November 18, and I've found people going both ways on whether or not there's any way of using them. I'd love to be able to just put them on the SS, but the Carnival policy says that won't work (although I've seen evidence that people have done it, anyway!) We're doing Nachi in Cozumel and a Mayan tour in Progreso, so I'd assume it's possible we'd use them in some fashion in either of those, but I don't want to have to find something extra to spend them on!

    Any ideas or experience?
