  1. I am going on Ovation to Alaska in August. My question is if I purchase an ulu in port will Royal allow me to bring it on board (even if security takes it until I need to pack it)?

I heard other cruise lines are not allowing them on the ship at all and require you to have them shipped. However the vendors seem to only be shipping them to the US and not Canada which does not help me.

    Any insights here will help.

  2. I am loving this review! The pictures are getting me excited for my cruise on Ovation to Alaska in August. The Ovation looks like it will keep the teenage boys well occupied!

I do have one question. I want to get an ulu (knife) in Alaska. Are you able to bring them back on the ship? I heard some cruises take them and you get a receipt to get it back at the end of the cruise and others are not allowing them and require you to have it shipped home before you board.

  3. I am on the Ovation this summer and was diverted to Ward Cove. I did a little digging and found that there is a complementary shuttle to Ketchikan from the port (source https://wardcoveak.com/about-us) the drop off location was discussed at City Council and they debated a mix of drop off at beth 2 vs the Ketchikan Southeat Discovery Centre. Looks like it will be the latter which appears to we walking distance to many areas downtown and the lumberjack show.

As a millennial I'd like to weigh in, but I haven't been on Royal yet (in December!). I've been on Carnival and Norwegian. My first cruise ever was on Carnival Vista and we had an awesome CD! I still follow him on Instagram! He had such an outgoing personality, he was a constant presence throughout the cruise, and really engaged the cruisers. NCL was a different story. The CD was practically absent, I saw more of his asst. CDs than him! I like a fun, energetic CD that engages you, not someone who is part of the background. I feel like it ties everything together. I'm interested to see what it's like on Harmony in December.

All the CDs we have cruised with on Carnival have been great. You must be talking about Matt. We cruised with him before he moved to the Vista. We thought he was amazing and there couldn't be anyone better. Then we cruised with Dr. E on Carnival Magic who was trained by Matt. He was unbelievably good. Before the shows started and he would get up to speak we were hoping they would cancel the show and just let Dr. E continue. He would start the morning off with his good morning song which just set the day off right! I have never met anyone with so much energy before.

We also cruised with Princess, had a great cruise but couldn't even tell you if they had a cruise director. I guess I'll find out what the CD on the Navigator is like next month.

I noticed NAVIGATOR is not yet supported on the Royal app, so hopefully that will happen soon.

I was doing my online check-in today for NAVIGATOR next month and saw where you upload your own security photo.  This wasn’t included on my MAJESTY OF THE SEAS check-in from last month.  So looks like NAVIGATOR will have that technology upgrade.

When I did my Navigator check in for March 15th last month it didn't have that option available. I will have to check and see if it is there now.

The following excerpt (at the end of the post)  is straight from the Royal Caribbean "Guest Conduct Policy".

    https://www.royalcaribbean.com/content/dam/royal/resources/pdf/guest-conduct-policy.pdf

Reserving deck chairs is right up there with  public nudity.

....... And where did the 30 minute rule come from?

Next time, I'm going to remove the towel,  turn it in to the attendent and sit down and enjoy myself it the best spot by the pool.

If........ and when anybody shows up, I'm going to tell them nobody was using that towel so I turned it in.  Let the fun begin.

-----  from the policy and I quote.

    Discourteous or Disruptive Behavior

Pool, deck and theater chairs may not be reserved. Public nudity is not permitted and guests must
be appropriately attired (including while on stateroom balconies if visible to others onboard, on
other vessels or ashore). Topless sunbathing may be permitted on some ships and on some
itineraries, but only in designated areas. (Contact Guest Services for Dress Code details.) Boom
boxes or loud radios are not permitted. Roller blades, roller skates, skateboards, scooters,
surfboards, bicycles, and similar items may not be utilized onboard; except for mobility aids related
to special needs, as approved by the ship's medical staff.

I am so tempted to print it off and highlight it then leave it on chairs (while making it look official).... Then watch their faces when they return!

  7. I've had mixed experiences. One good, one bareable the last exceptionally frustrating.

The good we were off early with a FTTF and got a rental car no problem. Only one Carnvial ship debarking at the time.

The bareable two Carnvial ships were debarking at the same time. We had a suite so we were off early and out of the terminal quickly. However the rental car shuttles was chaos! Took for ever and there was no designated spot for any company. However we made it to Disney's Blizard beach by 10:15am. So not too bad.

The last one was February 2018. ONLY ONE CUSTOMS AGENT! We were in a suite had number 2 tags and didn't debark until 10:30. The customs officer was put in secondary and there was a (yes only one) police officer checking passports for all the passengers. However getting our rental car was much easier. We were heading to Disney to use up our minigolf admissions and didn't get there until 1:30.

So it is hit or miss and I was happy to have late evening flights back to Toronto on each occasion.

The only liquids that are within the rules to bring on-board are 2 bottles of wine. All other liquids (beer, water, soda, whisky, you name it) are not officially allowed. This prohibition is rarely enforced against non-alcoholic liquids, but is enforced against alcoholic liquids that come to their attention. Although some cordials have no more alcohol than some wines, they are based on neutral grain alcohol and therefore are not wines. If noticed, IMO a bottle of cordial would probably be confiscated and (if unopened) returned to you at the end of the cruise. They MIGHT allow a bottle of cordial to pass as one of your two bottles, especially if you point out in a non-confrontational tone that the alcohol content is lower than the other bottle that you are bringing. But be prepared to have it confiscated. As always YMMV.

Now I'm wondering about Port which is wine, but fortified with neutral grain spirits:confused:

    Thom

Actually up to 12 17oz containers of non-alcholic beverages are allowed per stateroom. https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/food-drink-onboard-policy

  9. Where would early flights fit in? I'm cruising out of Tampa with an 11:45am return. I could take the Canrival shuttle if I wanted but if self assist goes before anyone and suites before early transfers then I may just self assist and cab it to the airport.

The last cruise I was on only 1 customs agent showed up. Our number was 2 with a suite and we didn't debark until almost 10.

  10. I will be on her Feb 24th- which i think is the first cruise out of drydock. May not do a live review (vacation with some girl friends and things could get a little crazy) but will take notes and look for anything specific that is requested as we get closer

There are a couple of things I would love to know:

    1. Did they add the coke freestyle machines and if so do they have caffeine free diet coke?

    2. Which nights are the formal nights for dinner?

  11. We are doing ABC+Labadee on a 9-night cruise on the Navigator of the Seas in March. This will be our first on Royal. I have only cruised Princess and Carnival so far.

    You are very welcome.

I'm having a great time planning our Aruba vacation next month. We did so much last time we were there it's a little challenging finding new things to do. I'm sure a lot of things will be a repeat. There is good snorkeling at Boca Catalina-Arashi area and we found good snorkeling at Baby Beach. Mangel Halto outside of the regular swimming area is supposed to be good too, but need to book with someone like Aruba Bob with the power fans to see it (we plan on doing that this time).

No, haven't been to Bonaire yet. I haven't found a cruise that goes there during the time we can cruise. I have always wanted to go to the ABC islands. I've only managed the A and C so far. :')

  12. Shopping or loose plans is a good idea because you will likely have time to use but stuff does happen and it did to me last time!

In February I got of the Magic in Port Canaveral. We were in group 2 to disembark but the process was usually slow! Only one customs agent showed up for the whole ship! They had a cop clearing people and sending only a few to secondary where the customs agent was. Normally we can get to Disney by 9:30 am and this time we were getting to the airport at 12:30pm.
