  1. I have been on both NCL and HAL and much prefer HAL. The cruise I took on NCL was a party, party, party. Lots of young people over drinking the first 2 days (there was a free drinks promo) then we hit rough seas and had hung over, vomiting young people. Overall I had a good cruise with lots to do but it was not the atmosphere I was looking for on a cruise.

There were no dance lessons on any cruise I have taken in the last 5 years. I think those are still on Cunard and Princess but I may be mistaken. On HAL I have seen card games being offered in the daily activities.

We don’t cruise for the wave pools, water slides and go carts but have never been bored on any cruise. We usually enjoy most music, game shows, movies and shows offered on a cruise.

  2. Interesting! In May, on Koningsdam, we traveled from Rome to Amsterdam doing 2 UK ports and we were not required to surrender our passports at any time. I wonder why you had to do so.

I’m not sure why. It was the UK authorities that boarded with us in Amsterdam and they took everyone’s passports while we were travelling to Dorset. IIRC they were probably returned after we left Gibraltar. We were given a receipt when we gave them over and had to present it to get them back.

  3. We travelled on HAL from Amsterdam to Rome. We had to surrender our passports before reaching the UK and they were returned to us before we reached Barcelona. So we did not need them for the ports in between. The ship usually announces before hand what you will need to take with you at the ports.

  4. I am with Lady Arwen. We loved the Lido pool! We were on her for 16 days, many of them in the Mediterranean. Any day that was a sea day, or a day we wanted to stay on the ship, was spent at the pool. We were usually on the second story with a couple of lounge chairs and a bed (there were 3 of us). We read, listened to music, people watched, ate, drank and relaxed. We never had trouble finding a spot. There was no entertainment but we were happy to just listen to music and relax. There was always 2 showings of the daily movie at night. The New York Pizza and Deli had pizza and movie snacks late at night. And there were always groups of people playing games and cards at the tables.

  5. I have been on the Maasdam, the Nieuw Amsterdam and the Koningsdam. The dining rooms have mostly armed chairs but all three have also had armless chairs. Just ask your server for one and it will be there every day for you. I have not seen armless chairs at the Lido but I have at the Pinnacle Grill.

The single bed should support her, if her weight is what is listed.

As mentioned above, a handicapped room will be needed. They do have to be booked ahead but it is not unusual to have vacant ones close to cruise time. We have been given them as a Guarantee during the last week.

  6. We did a 16 day med cruise this September/October on the Koningsdam with our 30 year old daughter. She loved it and there were young people on the ship. I think the region helped with that. There are far more Europeans of all ages on these cruises (though not many children). We purchased beverage cards prior to the cruise and that worked great for us.

I have also been on the NCL Spirit and although I enjoyed the cruise (again with my daughter) it was a party boat and our cruise offered a free drink package. The ship was full of drunks for the first 2 day, than we hit bad weather and it was full of a seasick, hungover crowd for a couple of days!

Certainly not the fault of the Spirit, just a complication that comes with free drinks and a younger crowd.
